Rating: 4.36
Based on 66 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Honda Fit is a subcompact car known for its exceptional space efficiency and versatility. Introduced in the US market in 2006, the Fit is a 5-door hatchback. Key trims included the base and Sport models. New, the 2008 Fit ranged from approximately $14,000 to $16,000. Its "magic seat" configuration, allowing for multiple cargo arrangements, and its fuel efficiency made it incredibly popular.
The Good

The 2008 Honda Fit boasts impressive fuel efficiency and renowned Honda reliability, appealing to practical buyers. Its clever design maximizes interior space, providing comfort and versatility. The Fit’s surprisingly peppy performance and nimble handling can also bring a bit of fun to driving, fulfilling emotional desires for an engaging experience. Overall, it delivers excellent value for money.

The Bad

The 2008 Honda Fit's weaknesses include a somewhat noisy cabin, especially at highway speeds. The ride can be a bit harsh on rough roads. Some owners have reported issues with the paint chipping or premature wear. The air conditioning system can struggle in extremely hot climates. It's essential to check for these issues during a pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2008 Honda Fit Have?

The 2008 Honda Fit is generally considered reliable, but some frequently reported problems include issues with the ignition coil, which can cause engine misfires. Some owners have reported paint chipping, particularly on the roof and hood. Air conditioning compressors failing prematurely have also been reported.
Recalls for the 2008 Fit have included issues related to the window switch, which could potentially overheat and cause a fire. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with Honda to see if all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around regular maintenance items such as brakes, tires, and fluid changes. As the car ages, issues like rust, especially in areas with harsh winters, and wear and tear on suspension components become more common. Keeping up with recommended maintenance schedules is crucial to minimize potential problems. Some owners have also reported issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) in later model years (although the 2008 model does not have a CVT), so it's a good idea to research transmission issues as a preventative measure.

How long will the 2008 Honda Fit last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2008 Honda Fit can easily surpass 200,000 miles and provide 15+ years of service. Many owners report reaching 250,000 miles or more with regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and addressing any mechanical issues promptly.
Long-term durability can be affected by rust, particularly in regions with salted roads. Weaknesses can emerge in the form of suspension component wear, air conditioning system failures, and potential issues with the ignition system. Proper maintenance is key to maximizing the lifespan of the engine and transmission.

I have owned this car longer than any other car I have owned. It is a lot for the money. After 12 years it is still like new. No major problems except to replace tires. Normal care by the dealer.
Misfit
This is the best vehicle we've ever owned. Bought it off a lot in 2008. We've driven it all over (highway miles) She's got about 80+ thousand miles on her now, but I'm sure she's got another 300 thou plus in her. She's a great car!! She might look extremely tiny on the outside but she is huge and comfy on the inside and everyone who has ever seen her can't believe how roomy and comfy she actually is!! She gets about 34 mpg on the highway. When you put the seats all down you would not believe what "Fits in a Fit"!! lol Google what fits and you'll be shocked!! 😉 If you are looking for a small, economical, extremely reliable vehicle that seats 4 very comfortably... This car is definitely for you. 😉
Yannick
Met all the necessary needs to drive a car very smooth and easy going vehicle no problems well maintained enough room to sit in car.

Safety features include standard front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic brake distribution (EBD). Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) was not standard but available.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) give the 2008 Honda Fit 4 stars for frontal crash protection for the driver and passenger, and 5 stars for side crash protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the 2008 Fit a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact tests. 2008 Honda Fit Prices and Market Value

2008 Honda Fit Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Honda Fit is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Honda Fit Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2008 Honda Fit competes with vehicles like the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, and Scion xD. In terms of performance, the Fit offers slightly more engaging handling than the Yaris and Versa. The Scion xD might offer a bit more power.
Features-wise, the Fit's "magic seat" gives it a significant advantage in cargo versatility. Reliability is comparable across these models, all being Japanese brands known for dependability. The Nissan Versa typically offers a lower price point, but sacrifices some features and interior quality.
Alternatives to consider would be the Toyota Yaris for its similar reliability and fuel efficiency, or the Scion xD for a slightly sportier feel. However, the Honda Fit’s combination of space, versatility, and reliability makes it a standout choice in the subcompact segment. The Hyundai Accent is another alternative, offering good value but perhaps not the same long-term reliability reputation as the Honda or Toyota.

Ranks #63 Hatchback

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Honda Fit a Good Sedan?

The 2008 Honda Fit is an excellent choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable, fuel-efficient, and versatile subcompact car. It's ideal for city dwellers, students, or anyone needing maximum cargo space in a small package.
It is worth buying used if it has been well-maintained and is free of rust or significant mechanical issues. The Sport trim offers a few more desirable features, but even the base model provides good value. A thorough pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended to ensure long-term satisfaction. If you prioritize advanced technology or a quieter ride, you might consider newer alternatives, but for basic transportation with outstanding practicality, the 2008 Fit is a solid choice.

Best car I have ever owned. I am 71 years young.

Nearly perfect car for me. High mpg. I am single. Keep the back seats down all the time. Holds more than enough for a 4 month camping trip for one person. Great around town. As others have said, a little noisy, a little bumpy. The noise does not bother me. A little less bumpy would help.

It's not as great on gas like they say

It's such a shame because I been a Honda girl for over 28 years!! For me it's heartbreaking to see Honda not have the pride, honor, and integrity they once had. The quality of their products is no longer

Small, versatile, economical

High MPG -- consistently 34 MPG mostly highway. No mechanical failures in eleven years. "Magic Seat" provides lots of room for transportation for a small car. The manual transmission is fun to drive.

Great Car! Airbags Saved My Husband

My husband drove this (Fit Sport) for his sales job. Great car for all the reasons people buy Fits. It was totalled in an accident that mangled the car, but my husband survived with only a bit of whiplash. Naturally, we bought another Fit Sport. Great cars!

A Basic Auto

The base model of the Honda Fit is very utilitarian. It is lightweight and gets great gas mileage as a result. It's fairly roomy, and can be configured to carry a substantial load. It's great for local commuting, but not the best choice for a long road trip.
