2009 Honda Fit Review: Compact Car That's Roomy And Dependable

Rating: 4.29
Based on 95 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Honda Fit is a subcompact hatchback known for its surprising spaciousness and fuel efficiency. Introduced in the US in 2006 as a 2007 model, the Fit quickly gained popularity. The 2009 model is part of the second generation. Key trims included the base and Sport. Pricing ranged from approximately $14,500 to $16,000 when new. It stands out due to its "magic seat" configuration, allowing for versatile cargo arrangements, a feature unparalleled in its class.
The Good

The 2009 Honda Fit offers a blend of practicality and fun. Its advantages include excellent fuel efficiency, Honda's reputation for reliability, and surprising interior space thanks to its unique "magic seat." It's nimble handling makes it fun to drive, appealing to those seeking a practical yet enjoyable driving experience. The low cost of ownership and high resale value also appeal to the practical buyer.

The Bad

While generally reliable, the 2009 Honda Fit has some weaknesses. The ride can be firm, especially on rough roads. Road noise can be noticeable at higher speeds. Some owners have reported issues with the paint being thin and prone to chipping. Also, the air conditioning system can be weak in very hot climates. Consider these points when evaluating a used model.

2009 Honda Fit: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options: 1.5-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder
  • Horsepower: 117 hp @ 6,600 rpm
  • Fuel Economy:
    • Manual Transmission: 27 mpg city / 33 mpg highway
    • Automatic Transmission: 28 mpg city / 35 mpg highway
  • 0-60 Times: Approximately 9.5 seconds (automatic) and slightly faster for manual transmission.
  • Towing Capacity: Not recommended or rated for towing.
  • Trim-Level Features:
    • Base: Includes standard features like power windows, power locks, air conditioning, and a four-speaker audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS) and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA).
    • Sport: Adds features such as alloy wheels, fog lights, a rear spoiler, cruise control, a security system, a six-speaker audio system, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, and USB audio interface.

Both trims offered the "magic seat" feature, allowing the rear seats to fold flat into the floor or flip up to accommodate tall items. The Sport trim offers a slightly more aggressive appearance and additional convenience features, but both trims provide the core benefits of the Fit: fuel efficiency and cargo versatility.

What Problems Does the 2009 Honda Fit Have?

The 2009 Honda Fit is generally considered a reliable car, but some common issues have been reported. One frequently mentioned problem is weak air conditioning performance, especially in hotter climates. Some owners have reported the AC struggling to keep the cabin cool. Another issue is paint chipping, with the paint on some models being thin and prone to damage.

There have been some recalls for the 2009 Honda Fit, including potential issues with the power window switch and the fuel pump relay. It's crucial to check the VIN of any used Fit to see if it has been subject to any outstanding recalls and whether the necessary repairs were performed. Long-term reliability concerns are relatively minimal, but like any vehicle, regular maintenance is key. Some owners have reported issues with the ignition coils over time, leading to misfires. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt use, so inspecting the undercarriage is advisable. Generally, addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into larger, more costly repairs down the line. Overall, the 2009 Fit holds up relatively well over time if properly maintained, but being aware of these potential issues is essential when considering a used purchase.

How long will the 2009 Honda Fit last?

Given proper maintenance, a 2009 Honda Fit can easily surpass 200,000 miles and provide 15+ years of service. Many owners report reaching these milestones with only routine maintenance. Factors influencing longevity include regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and addressing any minor mechanical issues promptly. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses can emerge in areas like the suspension (struts and shocks may need replacement), and the aforementioned A/C system. Rust is also a potential long-term concern in colder climates where road salt is used.

This car has been extremely reliable and fun to drive. I have put well over 200K miles on it with no issues. Save the manuals as there is nothing like running through the gears in a Honda.

Great value. Very reliable Honda product. Has a strong first / second gear. Lot's of storage room. Light blue color and gray interior matched well.

my Honda fit 2009 overall is an older vehicle but mine only had around 50,000 miles once the salesman showed me the sport shifter and how to use the paddles I was all for it I can clearly drive from Texas San Antonio Texas to Las Vegas Nevada simple it cost nothing I really love this car for a college student are recommended highly.

Bought this car because I needed something that was good on mpg and could fit stuff. Found just that in this 2009 Fit. Car averages 31.5 mpg combined. Spot-on name for the car--I can fit a ton on a daily basis! Fold flat seats, magic seat make carting around product (for work) a breeze. However, the car won't win any races...it's about as gutless as you can get. 131 hp and the thing REALLY struggles on an incline, passing or jumping into action on the few times I need to floor it. Handling however, reacts well and the car is a fun city-driver, if you give it time to get to speed. Interior is basic cheap: seats are hard cushion, dash is hard plastic, A/C is awful. If I lived anywhere where it was hot/humid most of the year, I would die. The A/C loses its crisp, cold air about a half hour into any trip. Checked with multiple auto shops and its not just my car--apparently the front end is too small to compensate for the sun beaming down on the body and therefore the unit cripples under the heat. One of the few interior pluses though is the plethora of cup holders and storage compartments. Also parts are hard to come by as the tires, battery, etc. all run a size smaller than average (partially due to the small front end) and many stores won't carry the sizes. Given another chance, although there are some things I enjoy about the car, I wouldn't buy it again. Too many issues. Need something with more than 6" of ground clearance for one, given how much it snows in Flagstaff. Reliability has been average, now going on 4th year owning the car. Nothing to write home about, but hasn't broken the bank either.

I've had a 3 hondas before and I have big respect for that company,up antill I've bought Fit.Gas milege is around 30 avarege, exterior not bad,now the things I didn't like:interior is cheap worse then KIA,it is the most uncomfortable car I ever had, don't even think take it on a higway whent speed limit 75 especially in a winter time, handelling is werryy poor.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Honda Fit offered a modest array of tech features for its time. The base model included a four-speaker audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input jack. The Sport trim added a six-speaker system, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, a USB audio interface, and cruise control. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available.

Safety features were more comprehensive, with standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control, and side curtain airbags. The 2009 Honda Fit received good crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). NHTSA gave it 4 stars for frontal crash protection and 5 stars for side crash protection. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact tests. While modern vehicles offer far more advanced technology, the 2009 Fit provided a solid foundation of safety features for its class and model year. The available USB audio interface on the Sport trim was a notable feature for integrating personal music devices, a growing trend at the time.

2009 Honda Fit Prices and Market Value

The 2009 Honda Fit had a starting MSRP of around $14,500 for the base model and around $16,000 for the Sport trim when new. Used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $4,000 to $8,000 in today's market. The Honda Fit holds its value reasonably well due to its reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident records, and overall condition. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command a premium.

2009 Honda Fit Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Honda Fit is generally an economical car to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety ratings and modest performance. Fuel costs are excellent thanks to its fuel-efficient engine. Maintenance is generally affordable, with Honda parts being readily available and relatively inexpensive. Repairs are also typically reasonable, provided the vehicle has been well-maintained. Long-term ownership costs are low compared to many other vehicles, making it a budget-friendly choice for many car buyers.

2009 Honda Fit Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Honda Fit is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Honda Fit Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 Honda Fit competed with vehicles like the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, and Hyundai Accent. In terms of performance, the Fit offered a slightly more engaging driving experience than the Yaris and Versa, though the Accent could be argued as comparable. Feature-wise, the Fit's "magic seat" gave it a distinct advantage in cargo versatility. Reliability-wise, the Fit and Yaris were generally considered top contenders, surpassing the Versa and Accent. Price-wise, the Fit was typically competitive, though the Versa often had a slightly lower starting price.

Alternatives to the 2009 Honda Fit would depend on your priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Toyota Yaris is a strong choice. If maximum interior space is needed, the Nissan Versa offers more rear legroom (though it lags in driving dynamics). If you're looking for a bit more style and aren't as concerned about long-term reliability the Hyundai Accent might be considered. However, the Fit strikes a great balance of practicality, reliability, and fun-to-drive factor making it a solid pick in its class. For someone prioritizing value and cargo space, the Fit remains a top recommendation. The Mazda 2, introduced later, is also an option with engaging driving dynamics.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Honda Fit a Good Sedan?

The 2009 Honda Fit is an excellent choice for individuals seeking a fuel-efficient, reliable, and versatile subcompact car. It's ideal for city dwellers, commuters, and anyone needing a small car with surprisingly large cargo capacity. Whether it's worth buying depends on the condition and price of the used model. A well-maintained example with service records is preferable. The Sport trim offers added features like alloy wheels and cruise control, making it a worthwhile upgrade if available at a reasonable price. If budget is a concern, the base model still provides the core benefits of the Fit. Overall, the 2009 Honda Fit offers a compelling blend of practicality and value, making it a solid choice in the used car market, provided it has been well cared for.

The ultimate in frugal, functional and smart.

The outside dimensions of a perfect city car that is easy to find parking for yet as big inside as a mid-size SUV and unreal headroom.

Most reliable car I've owned.

Fun to drive! Holds the road. Easy to maneuver/park! Lots of storage space! Magic seats fold down to floor. Lousy carpeting. Uncomfortable head rests. Other than that, EXCELLENT! We get 42 - 50 mpg, manual transmission. Wishing we could by this all over again, as a new car!

Reliable

This car has been extremely reliable and fun to drive. I have put well over 200K miles on it with no issues. Save the manuals as there is nothing like running through the gears in a Honda.

Great value and low maintenance car. Not the best if looking for comfort and great AC. After 9 years of ownership and problems with the car.

Excellent Dealership! Thank you, Ray Ortiz!

Great car for our needs! Excellent price for such a well appointed one owner car. It is hard to find a manual drive car AND one that has been so well maintained. The Honda Fit is a great car to drive; very comfortable and sporty. Great on gas! Super interior! We are very pleased with this car and for all the help in buying it.

Great reliable small car for young driver or old.

The car was my husbands car and he was a professor who drove it every day to the university so it held up well with highway miles. He loved it. No gadgets and he picked red to be sure he was seen.
