The 2011 Honda Insight is a compact hybrid hatchback, part of the second generation Insight launched to offer an affordable entry into hybrid ownership. Available from 2010-2014, key trims included the base model and the EX. Its popularity stemmed from its fuel efficiency and lower price point compared to the Prius. Expect a used pricing range between $6,000 and $12,000, depending on condition and mileage. It stands out for its accessible hybrid technology and practical hatchback design.
The Good

The 2011 Honda Insight offers exceptional fuel efficiency, appealing to the practical buyer seeking to save money on gas. Its Honda reliability provides peace of mind. The aerodynamic design gives it a futuristic look, and its compact size makes it easy to maneuver in urban environments, appealing to those wanting a stylish, yet sensible car.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2011 Honda Insight include its somewhat lackluster acceleration compared to non-hybrid vehicles. The interior materials can feel cheap, and the ride can be firm. Watch out for potential battery degradation in high-mileage examples, which can significantly impact fuel economy and require expensive replacement.

What Problems Does the 2011 Honda Insight Have?

Frequently reported problems with the 2011 Honda Insight include issues related to the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system, such as battery degradation leading to reduced fuel economy and performance. Some owners have reported premature battery failure, especially in hot climates or with higher mileage. Another common complaint is the noise and vibration from the CVT transmission, which some find unrefined compared to traditional automatic transmissions.

There have been recalls issued for the 2011 Insight, including recalls related to the software controlling the hybrid system and potential issues with the fuel tank. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the hybrid battery and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. Owners should be prepared for potential battery replacement expenses, which can be a significant investment. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and adherence to Honda's recommended service schedule, can help mitigate some of these risks and extend the vehicle's lifespan.

How long will the 2011 Honda Insight last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2011 Honda Insight can easily achieve 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 10-15 years of service. Long-term durability hinges on regular maintenance, especially of the hybrid system. The primary weakness over time is the NiMH battery, which can degrade, reducing fuel economy. Replacement, while expensive, can revitalize the car's performance. Rust can also be a factor in northern climates. Proper care extends its life significantly.

This vehicle is in very good condition and might only need to replace the left fender. Its good on fuel and hybrid systems works very well.
SavedByGrace
This car is more than I'd hoped for when my godson said he'd pay so that I could have a vehicle. It runs smoothly, is beautiful (love the Mediterranean blue pearl color), and has plenty of space with ample trunk space and fold down back seats in the hatchback section. It's hybrid, but not plugin, charging itself while using. I'm interested in protecting the environment but never thought I'd own a hybrid vehicle. I'm very happy!

Good to get around town - especially in the city. Has great gas mileage and easy handling. You can also fit a surprising amount of stuff in this hatchback given the overall size.

i recently purchased a 2011 Honda Insight, with 32k miles. it was the dream car i was looking for. a couple things i have not seen mentioned is when you have the "econ" button on, which allows for the electric motor parts to kick in, it shuts off the air-conditioner and the fan just pushes warm engine air. If it starts getting too hot inside i just shut off the econ and let the car roll a little to get the engine back on and cold air flowing again. other than that i have really no complaints. the rear window split isn't really atop bad of a blind spot for me, in fact it helps block annoying headlights if anything! the display panel is nice, lots of info to scroll through though the "check tire pressure" light seems to be a little too sensitive and I've gotten out to check for flats or low low pressure, when the pressure turned out to be just fine. very smooth ride, a lot cheaper than the Prius. LOVE MY INSIGHT!!! 🙂

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Honda Insight offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Base models include automatic climate control, power windows, and keyless entry. Higher trims, like the EX, add alloy wheels, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA).

Entertainment: The base model features a basic two-speaker audio system. The LX upgrades to a six-speaker system with a USB audio interface. The EX offers an improved audio system, and a navigation system was optional.

Driver-Assistance: The Insight includes Honda's Eco Assist system, providing visual feedback to help drivers maximize fuel efficiency. However, it lacks advanced driver-assistance features common in newer cars, such as adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning.

Safety: Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD), and multiple airbags. The EX trim adds Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA).

Crash Test Ratings: The 2011 Honda Insight received good crash test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Check specific ratings for frontal, side, and rollover crash protection on the IIHS and NHTSA websites.

2011 Honda Insight Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Honda Insight had an MSRP ranging from around $18,500 to $23,000, depending on the trim level. Currently, used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $12,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and location. Depreciation has been significant, as is typical for hybrid vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include battery health, overall mechanical condition, accident history, and the presence of service records. Low mileage examples in excellent condition command the highest prices.

2011 Honda Insight Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Honda Insight is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety ratings and modest performance. Excellent fuel economy significantly reduces fuel costs. Routine maintenance is relatively inexpensive, aligning with Honda's reputation for reliability. However, potential hybrid battery replacement can be a significant expense. Overall, long-term ownership costs are lower than average, making it a budget-friendly choice if major repairs are avoided.

2011 Honda Insight Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Honda Insight is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Honda Insight Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2011 Honda Insight competed primarily with the Toyota Prius and, to a lesser extent, the Nissan Leaf. Compared to the Prius, the Insight offered a lower entry price but sacrificed some fuel economy and interior space. The Prius generally offered a more refined driving experience and better long-term reliability, especially concerning the hybrid battery.

Against the Nissan Leaf, the Insight provided a more conventional driving experience (Leaf being fully electric) and eliminated range anxiety, but lacked the Leaf's zero-emissions advantage. In terms of features, the Insight offered a comparable set of standard and available options, though the Prius often had more advanced technology.

For those prioritizing fuel economy above all else and willing to spend a bit more, the Toyota Prius is a better alternative. If electric driving is a must, the Nissan Leaf (while requiring careful range planning) provides a different advantage.

Other similar alternatives include the Ford Fusion Hybrid (slightly larger and more comfortable) or the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid (similar price point with more modern features).

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Honda Insight a Good Sedan?

The 2011 Honda Insight is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking excellent fuel economy and Honda reliability in a compact package. It's worth buying as a used car if you find one in good condition with a healthy hybrid battery. Consider the EX trim for added features like alloy wheels and stability control. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial, especially to assess the battery's health. Avoid examples with high mileage or questionable maintenance history. It's a practical and affordable option for daily commuting and city driving.

Love my honda

I preferred my 2010 over my new-used 2011. It's a great car for gas mileage and I never had any issues with my 2010 and I drove it 4-5 years.

Dream come true

This car is more than I'd hoped for when my godson said he'd pay so that I could have a vehicle. It runs smoothly, is beautiful (love the Mediterranean blue pearl color), and has plenty of space with ample trunk space and fold down back seats in the hatchback section. It's hybrid, but not plugin, charging itself while using. I'm interested in protecting the environment but never thought I'd own a hybrid vehicle. I'm very happy!

Best car owned to date since 3 cylinder geo metro

Owned since new in 2011. Almost have 250k miles. Drove 2x yearly for 6 years to South Texas from Minnesota. Used as a daily driver for GF for work 2 hours round trip. Only issues as others have stated sensitive/faulty tire pressure sensor. Air conditioner motor rebuild (our fault ran ac in huston traffic when it was 110 out at dead stop traffic). Takata airbag recall. Burned out the battery terminal cable ends. Normal battery replacement It has dealt with the harsh winter and extreme summers and has never once failed us. The cost of the maintenance is a little high due to being CVT but the money saved in gas makes up for it. AVG 51-55 mpg have seen it as high as 73 with eco in flat states like Iowa. Only con is the seats on long drives will put pressure on your lower back/kidneys. Simple fix buy a seat pad. Was pretty sad to see them discontinue the line but as of 2019 it was brought back. During multiple services at certified honda multiple offers have been given buy people to purchase the car by both the dealership as well as private. Have yet to have to replace the electric battery. All tests as of 2019 on it are excellent condition. 10/10 would highly recommend this car.

389000 miles with almost zero issues

I've put 389000 miles on my 2011 Insight and besides tires, brakes and oil changes the only issue that's occurred is a cracked windshield. Wonderful reliability!!!

Great car for the money

Good to get around town - especially in the city. Has great gas mileage and easy handling. You can also fit a surprising amount of stuff in this hatchback given the overall size.

Great car

I've owned this car since November 2014, and it's been averaging 45 mpg since. Never had a problem, and compared to Prius' I've driven- I genuinely prefer the Insight.

Most Reliable & Gas Saving Car I've Owned

This car had met all my needs. I loved the money I saved on gas and the hybrid assistance. This car was an excellent, reliable vehicle. We drove it to Florida twice and it was an excellent ride.
