The 2022 Honda Insight is a hybrid sedan blending fuel efficiency with a sophisticated design. Introduced as a hybrid model, the latest generation, from 2019 onward, offers a more refined take on the hybrid formula. Key trims include the LX and EX. Expect a pricing range from approximately $26,000 to $30,000 when new. Its popularity stems from its blend of Honda's reliability, excellent fuel economy, and a more conventional sedan appearance compared to some other hybrids.
The Good

The 2022 Honda Insight boasts exceptional fuel efficiency appealing to practical buyers. Its comfortable ride and quiet cabin offer a pleasant driving experience. Honda's renowned reliability provides peace of mind. The stylish exterior and well-designed interior offer a sense of sophistication, satisfying emotional desires for an attractive and dependable vehicle.

The Bad

Some criticisms of the 2022 Honda Insight include its somewhat uninspired acceleration compared to some competitors, despite its hybrid powertrain. The rear seats might feel a bit cramped for taller passengers. Some drivers find the continuously variable transmission (CVT) less engaging than traditional automatic transmissions. Availability of certain features may be limited based on trim level.

2022 Honda Insight: Quick Overview

Here's a summary of key specifications for the 2022 Honda Insight:

  • Engine Options: 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine paired with an electric motor.
  • Horsepower: Total system horsepower is 151 hp.
  • Fuel Economy: EPA-estimated fuel economy is around 55 mpg city / 49 mpg highway / 52 mpg combined.
  • 0-60 Times: Approximately 7.7 seconds.
  • Towing Capacity: Not recommended or rated for towing.
  • Trim-Level Features:
    • LX: Includes Honda Sensing suite (adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, etc.), automatic climate control, push-button start, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
    • EX: Adds features like blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a sunroof, and upgraded interior trim.

The hybrid system intelligently manages the gasoline engine and electric motor to optimize fuel efficiency and performance. The Insight prioritizes electric power at lower speeds and blends gasoline and electric power for stronger acceleration. The lack of towing capacity is typical for vehicles in this class focused on fuel economy. The Honda Sensing suite provides a comprehensive set of driver-assistance features even on the base LX trim, enhancing safety and convenience.

What Problems Does the 2022 Honda Insight Have?

The 2022 Honda Insight generally enjoys good reliability ratings. However, some owners have reported minor issues, particularly related to the infotainment system (e.g., occasional glitches or slow response times). There have also been isolated reports of battery performance fluctuations, although these are not widespread. Recalls for the Insight are relatively infrequent, but it's always recommended to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information specific to your VIN.

Long-term reliability concerns are generally minimal, thanks to Honda's reputation. However, like all hybrids, the long-term health of the hybrid battery pack is a key consideration. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes and adherence to the recommended service schedule, is crucial for maximizing the lifespan of the battery and other components. Some owners proactively consider extended warranties to cover potential battery replacement costs after the standard warranty expires. Overall, the Insight is considered a reliable vehicle, but staying informed about potential issues and maintaining the vehicle properly are essential for long-term ownership satisfaction.

How long will the 2022 Honda Insight last?

With diligent maintenance, the 2022 Honda Insight can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report well over 10 years of service. Key to longevity is regular oil changes, transmission fluid services, and hybrid battery maintenance. Long-term durability is generally strong, but the hybrid battery's performance may gradually decrease over time, leading to slightly reduced fuel economy. Keeping the battery cool and avoiding extreme temperatures can help extend its lifespan. Suspension components and brakes may also require attention as the vehicle ages.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Honda Insight comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and a rearview camera are also standard. Higher trims may offer features like a premium audio system and integrated navigation. The Honda Sensing suite of driver-assistance features is standard on all trims, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available on the EX trim.

Safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) are typically high, with the Insight often earning top safety scores. Optional features are limited, as Honda primarily packages features by trim level rather than offering a wide range of individual options. The intuitive infotainment system and comprehensive suite of safety features contribute to a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

2022 Honda Insight Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Honda Insight had a starting MSRP of around $26,000 to $30,000 when new, depending on the trim. As a used vehicle, expect prices to range from approximately $20,000 to $26,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The Insight depreciates at a moderate rate, typical for hybrid vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, accident history, and the availability of service records. Hondas generally hold their value well, but the hybrid battery's condition also plays a significant role in resale value.

2022 Honda Insight Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Honda Insight is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate, comparable to other sedans in its class. Fuel costs are significantly lower than non-hybrid vehicles due to its excellent fuel economy. Routine maintenance is relatively affordable, following Honda's standard service schedule. Repairs are also typically reasonable, thanks to Honda's reliability. Overall, the Insight offers a low total cost of ownership, making it an attractive choice for budget-conscious buyers.

How Does the 2022 Honda Insight Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2022 Honda Insight competes with hybrid sedans like the Toyota Prius, Hyundai Ioniq, and Kia Niro. Compared to the Prius, the Insight offers a more conventional sedan design, which some buyers prefer. The Prius, however, boasts a slightly longer history of hybrid technology and potentially better fuel economy in some driving conditions. The Hyundai Ioniq offers similar fuel economy and a lower starting price, but the Insight often has a more refined interior. The Kia Niro is a hybrid hatchback, providing more cargo space but potentially sacrificing some fuel economy.

In terms of reliability, the Insight and Prius are generally considered top contenders. Feature-wise, the Insight offers a competitive suite of standard driver-assistance technologies. Performance-wise, all these vehicles prioritize fuel efficiency over outright speed. A similar alternative to the Insight is the Toyota Corolla Hybrid, offering similar fuel economy and reliability in a slightly smaller package. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual preferences regarding styling, features, and cargo capacity. If a conventional sedan appearance is a priority, the Insight is a strong contender. If maximum cargo space is needed, the Niro might be a better choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Honda Insight a Good Sedan?

The 2022 Honda Insight is an excellent choice for buyers seeking a fuel-efficient and reliable hybrid sedan with a conventional design. It's ideal for commuters and families who prioritize fuel economy and safety. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and budget. A used Insight can offer excellent value, especially if well-maintained. The EX trim is often recommended for its added features like blind-spot monitoring. New or used, the Insight offers a compelling combination of efficiency, reliability, and practicality, making it a worthwhile consideration for those seeking a hybrid sedan. However, buyers needing more cargo space or maximum rear passenger room might consider alternatives.

Drive like a GrandPa!

My Insight EX 2022 is economical , comfortable and IMHO pretty. Now that late May is here (NJ) I've averaged 57 mpg in last 4 weeks. Winter is only 51 mpg. Bought in October 2021 and I average 625 miles per month, which means I fill up once per month! And always less than $30. I use the regenerative braking paddles as much as possible, only wish there was a third or fourth setting to bring to an almost complete stop stop, brake pads would last forever!, as I drive not much I'm averaging 11 months per oil change. I highly recommend this vehicle except if your commute is very hilly/ mountains. Much engine roar on big hills. Here in NJ not many of those. I'm 67 y.o. and do love to hypermile I do drive like the grandpa that I am!
