The 2013 Hyundai Accent is a subcompact car that offered practicality and value. Available as a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback, it belonged to the fourth generation of Accents (2012-2017). Key trims included the GLS (sedan) and GS/SE (hatchback). The Accent's popularity stemmed from its affordable price point, fuel efficiency, and surprisingly spacious interior for its class. It typically ranged from $14,000-$17,000 when new.
The Good

The 2013 Hyundai Accent provided excellent fuel economy, appealing to practical buyers. Its modern design was aesthetically pleasing. While not a performance vehicle, its peppy engine offered decent acceleration for city driving. The spacious interior and user-friendly features added to its appeal. Its affordability made it a great value proposition.

The Bad

The 2013 Hyundai Accent's weaknesses include a somewhat noisy cabin at highway speeds and a less refined ride compared to some competitors. The base model lacked features. Premature transmission issues have been reported by some owners. Rust can be an issue, particularly in areas with road salt. Suspension components should also be inspected.

What Problems Does the 2013 Hyundai Accent Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Hyundai Accent include potential transmission issues, particularly with the automatic transmission. Some owners have reported slipping or rough shifting, sometimes requiring costly repairs or replacement. Engine problems, such as oil leaks and issues with the fuel injectors have also been noted. Other reported issues include premature wear of brake components and electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the car's computer system.

Recalls for the 2013 Hyundai Accent have included issues related to brake light switch malfunctions. The brake light switch malfunction can cause the brake lights to not illuminate and can affect the operation of systems such as electronic stability control (ESC).

Long-term reliability concerns center around the aforementioned transmission problems. Some owners have also raised concerns about the durability of interior components and the potential for rust, especially in regions where road salt is used. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid services, is crucial for mitigating potential issues and maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Potential buyers should obtain a thorough pre-purchase inspection.

How long will the 2013 Hyundai Accent last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2013 Hyundai Accent can realistically reach 150,000-200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles), timely transmission fluid changes, and addressing minor repairs promptly are crucial. Weaknesses over time include potential transmission issues (especially the automatic), rust, and wear of suspension components. Ignoring maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. However, proper care will allow for a reliable commuter car over the long haul.
Positive Owner Reviews
MSA
Best Value for Money. It met all my needs. Spacious trunk with enough room for three strollers. Much better than any comparable brand. Very low maintenance costs. Excellent on highways and city. Interior is superior to most other cars. I searched for similar Japanese cars and was disappointed due to high selling prices, less features, and recalls and repairs needed. Drove it for four years and almost 75K miles without any problems at all.

The worst car ever I drive throughout 15 years will all brand but Hyundai is the worst no ac working no heat oil linking check engine light on don't pay Hyundai.

Poor visibility looking out rear, even worse with child car seats installed. Brakes make grind after rain or when not driven for a few days.

I love my Hyundai Accent. It's small and fuel efficient and has some cool features like ECO and stabilizer and satellite radio. An Inside trunk release and gas cap release are situated on the floor. The trunk is roomy and has a convenient light. The dash is digital. One of my favorite feature is the fuel gage indicates how far you can go on the fuel that is left in your tank. That is very handy. It is a nice little car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Hyundai Accent offered a basic but functional set of tech and safety features for its class. Standard features included a CD player with MP3 compatibility, auxiliary input jack, and power windows and locks on most trims. Higher trims (especially the SE hatchback) included Bluetooth connectivity, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and available cruise control.

Driver-assistance features were limited, with no advanced systems like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available. Safety features included standard front and side airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control (ESC).

Optional features included a sunroof (available on the SE).

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally good, with the 2013 Accent receiving a "Good" rating in most crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It's important to remember these scores are relative to other vehicles of the time. While basic, the Accent provided adequate safety for its class.

2013 Hyundai Accent Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Hyundai Accent ranged from approximately $14,000 to $17,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Accent has depreciated significantly due to its age and the general depreciation curve of subcompact cars. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and any reported accidents. Low mileage and a clean title will command a higher price. The automatic transmission models may hold slightly better value than manual transmission versions in some markets.

2013 Hyundai Accent Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Hyundai Accent is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety ratings and value. Fuel costs are excellent thanks to its fuel-efficient engine. Maintenance costs are relatively affordable, with readily available parts and straightforward repairs. However, potential transmission issues and rust could lead to higher repair costs in the long run. Overall, it's an inexpensive car to own, particularly if well-maintained.

How Does the 2013 Hyundai Accent Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2013 Hyundai Accent competed with the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta, and Kia Rio. The Accent offered a good balance of price and features, often undercutting the Honda Fit in price. The Fit, however, offered superior cargo space and arguably better reliability. The Nissan Versa was known for its spacious rear seats, while the Ford Fiesta provided a more engaging driving experience. The Kia Rio, sharing many components with the Accent, offered similar value and features.

In terms of reliability, the Honda Fit generally outperformed the Accent. The Accent's performance was comparable to its rivals, though the Fiesta offered a sportier feel. The Accent’s features were competitive for its price point, though some rivals offered more advanced tech options.

Alternatives to the 2013 Hyundai Accent include the Honda Fit (for cargo space and reliability), the Kia Rio (for similar value), and the Ford Fiesta (for a more fun driving experience). The Chevrolet Sonic is also a worthy competitor. The choice depends on individual priorities, but the Accent remains a compelling option for budget-conscious buyers.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Hyundai Accent a Good Sedan?

The 2013 Hyundai Accent is an ideal choice for budget-minded buyers seeking a fuel-efficient and practical commuter car. It's worth buying as a used car, especially if you can find a well-maintained model with low mileage and a clean vehicle history report. Opting for the SE trim offers added features like Bluetooth and steering-wheel controls. Be sure to have a mechanic inspect the car before purchase, paying close attention to the transmission and potential rust issues. If reliability is your top priority, consider a Honda Fit instead. However, for affordability and decent features, the Accent remains a viable option.

I have had my 2013 Hyundai Accent since it was new.

I have had my 2013 Hyundai Accent since it was new. I change my oil regularly and I've had to get new tires once. It has only 168,000 miles but I drive it daily. Never any issues The only problem I have with it is some rust on the paint from living in the Florida heat. I absolutely love this car. It is my third Hyundai Accent and never had any issues with any of them.

It seems like a pretty good used car.

I like the vehicle, it's the first Hyundai I ever owned. It's small, but seems very responsive When I drive it. The reality Is i needed another Car, so I bought it. And the truth is I rarely drive it. Like maybe 1 day a week. So it works For me.

First and Last Hyundai I Will Own

I have put more money into this car than any other vehicle I owned and Hyundai is supposed to have the best warranty on the market. That says something.... not to mention their service departments don't know what they are doing. I ended up trading my car in because my car was making noises and NO ONE at any of the Hyundai dealerships could figure out what was causing it. I was afraid I was going to end up stranded somewhere. Plus there is no room in this vehicle. My husband's knee would be in the way of my shifter while I was driving and his other knee would be pushed against my dashboard. My son's feet would hit the back of my passenger seat. The trunk was spacious (it fit my son's stroller, pack n play and still have room at the same time) but it caused a cramped feeling in the vehicle for everyone else.

Horrible re-sale value.

The worst thing about this car is its horrible re-sale value. With the 16" wheels, which I had, ride quality was bad and gas mileage could've been better - much better!!
