The 2019 Hyundai Kona is a subcompact SUV that entered the market offering a fresh and funky alternative to more established competitors. Its body style is a small, five-door hatchback with available all-wheel drive. Key trims include SE, SEL, Limited, and Ultimate. Pricing typically ranged from the low $20,000s to around $30,000 when new. The Kona stands out due to its bold styling, agile handling, and available turbocharged engine, making it popular for city dwellers and those seeking a fun, affordable SUV.
The Good

The 2019 Hyundai Kona offers a blend of advantages. For the practical buyer, it boasts good fuel efficiency, a comfortable ride (for its size), and strong value for the money. Emotionally, its quirky design and available turbocharged engine provide a fun and engaging driving experience. Reliability is also generally considered good, adding to its appeal.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2019 Hyundai Kona include a relatively small rear seat and cargo area, which can be cramped for taller passengers or those needing ample storage. Some owners have reported issues with the dual-clutch transmission in turbocharged models. The base engine can feel underpowered for some drivers. Be sure to inspect these areas before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2019 Hyundai Kona Have?

While the 2019 Hyundai Kona is generally considered reliable, some owners have reported issues. One frequently discussed concern revolves around the dual-clutch transmission (DCT) found in models with the 1.6L turbocharged engine. Some owners have experienced hesitation, jerky shifting, or rough engagement, especially at low speeds. This issue is more prevalent in the earlier production runs of the Kona.

Recalls for the 2019 Kona have included issues related to the electronic control unit (ECU) that could cause an engine stall. It's important to check the VIN with the NHTSA database to ensure any applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns often center on the DCT, as its complexity can lead to increased maintenance costs over time compared to a traditional automatic transmission. Some owners have also noted that the paint quality is not the most durable and can be susceptible to chipping. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid checks, is crucial for mitigating potential issues and ensuring the Kona's longevity. Premature battery failure has also been mentioned by some owners.

How long will the 2019 Hyundai Kona last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 Hyundai Kona can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Owner data suggests that regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles), timely fluid flushes, and proactive maintenance are key to maximizing longevity.

Long-term durability can be affected by the aforementioned DCT issues in the turbo models. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt use. Suspension components, especially in areas with poor road conditions, may require replacement over time. Addressing these potential weaknesses through regular inspections and preventative maintenance will contribute to a longer lifespan.

I super so love my car. I get all of my services done at Rick Hendrick Chevy Buick GMC. Thomas Mason is my advisor and he always gets me in. I like that he will tell whats going on before they complete the work. Keep up the good work.
Carl
Great looking car and fun to drive. Wanted a compact SUV and this was perfect. The turbo gives just enough pep without draining the gas tank. So happy with it, I bought two.
STaylor
This is a great safety rated car for my daughter who just got her license. Easy to handle with good safety features for new drivers
Negative Owner Reviews
Timmy
Fake reviews claiming five stars. These vehicles are not fine stars!! They are a cheap vehicle, and the resale value drops very fast. Not a good vehicle choice!!
Dp
Too early to tell as I haven't owned it very long what seems to be cheaply made. Very small compared to my other SUV but fits my needs for fuel mileage and all wheel drive for winter. Have to wonder of the safety of being rear-ended in this car??

This car was supposed to be the last vehicle I buy. It is too low to the ground and it's not very comfortable. The paint job is terrible. The NPR dealership is super busy but very unorganized. Too many people do not tell the truth. Cannot recommend Hyundai any longer.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Hyundai Kona offers a decent suite of built-in tech and safety features. Standard on all trims is a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, along with a rearview camera. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless charging, and a head-up display.

Driver-assistance features include standard lane keeping assist and forward collision avoidance assist on all models. SEL trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Ultimate trim includes lane departure warning and driver attention warning. These features enhance safety and convenience for the driver.

Optional features, depending on the trim level, include a sunroof, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and LED headlights. The Infinity premium audio system is also available on higher trims.

The 2019 Hyundai Kona received excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The IIHS awarded the Kona a "Top Safety Pick" rating, demonstrating its strong performance in crash tests. This robust safety performance further enhances the Kona's appeal to safety-conscious buyers.

2019 Hyundai Kona Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2019 Hyundai Kona had a starting MSRP in the low $20,000s and topped out around $30,000 for the fully loaded Ultimate trim. Currently, used market prices range from approximately $14,000 to $22,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Kona has experienced moderate depreciation, typical for its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and whether any outstanding recalls have been addressed. How Does the 2019 Hyundai Kona Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2019 Hyundai Kona competes with vehicles like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Nissan Kicks, and Toyota C-HR. In terms of performance, the Kona's turbocharged engine offers a more engaging driving experience than the HR-V, Kicks, and C-HR, but the CX-3 offers similar levels of driving fun. Feature-wise, the Kona is competitive, offering a good range of tech and safety equipment. Reliability is generally good, but the Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR are often cited as slightly more reliable options.

In terms of price, the Kona is typically very competitive, offering good value for the money. The Nissan Kicks is often less expensive, but lacks all-wheel drive.

Alternatives to the Kona depend on buyer priorities. If maximum cargo space is a priority, the Honda HR-V is a better choice. If a more engaging driving experience is desired, the Mazda CX-3 or a Kona with the turbocharged engine are good options. If reliability is paramount, the Toyota C-HR or Honda HR-V might be preferred. The Kia Soul, while technically a hatchback, also offers similar value and quirky styling.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Hyundai Kona a Good Wagon?

The 2019 Hyundai Kona is a solid choice for individuals or small families seeking a stylish, affordable, and fun-to-drive subcompact SUV. It's particularly well-suited for city dwellers due to its maneuverability and parking ease. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and priorities. A used 2019 Kona can represent good value, but it's essential to thoroughly inspect the vehicle, especially if it has the turbocharged engine, to check for any potential DCT issues. The SEL or Limited trims offer a good balance of features and price. If you prioritize performance, the Ultimate trim with the turbo engine is worth considering, but be aware of potential long-term maintenance costs associated with the DCT. Overall, the Kona is a compelling option in its segment, offering a blend of style, features, and value.

Starter issue

Have had trouble with car not starting. Seems the starter has a "flat spot" on it, and on occasion will not start. Battery is good, and I must turn the key up to ten times before it will "catch". Will happen up to 5 times, and then will move on and start just fine. Service unable to duplicate problem, so can't get it fixed under warranty.
