Rating: 4.94
Based on 50 Owner Reviews â–¶
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The Hyundai Kona, introduced in 2018, is a subcompact SUV known for its bold styling and agile handling. The 2021 model continues this trend. Available as a hatchback/SUV crossover, key trims include SE, SEL, Limited, and the sporty N Line. Original pricing ranged from around $20,000 to $30,000, depending on trim and options. Its distinctive design and available turbocharged engine make it a popular choice for urban drivers.
The Good

The 2021 Hyundai Kona offers a blend of practicality and fun. Performance is peppy, especially with the turbo engine. Its unique design appeals to emotional buyers, while its good fuel efficiency and strong warranty offer practical advantages. Reliability is generally good, and the Kona provides a comfortable ride for its size. It represents good value for money.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2021 Hyundai Kona include a relatively small rear seat and cargo area. Some reviewers have noted that the base engine can feel underpowered. The ride can be a bit firm on rough roads. Watch out for potential issues with the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) in the turbo models, though this is not a widespread problem.

What Problems Does the 2021 Hyundai Kona Have?

While the 2021 Hyundai Kona is generally considered reliable, some owners have reported issues. One relatively common concern involves the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) found in models equipped with the 1.6L turbocharged engine. Some owners have experienced jerky shifting or hesitation, though this isn't a widespread problem. Software updates sometimes resolve these issues. Other reported problems include minor electrical glitches and occasional issues with the infotainment system.

Recalls can vary, but it's important to check with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for any specific recalls affecting the 2021 Kona, as recalls can be issued for various reasons, including safety concerns. Long-term reliability concerns are similar to those of other subcompact SUVs. Regular maintenance and addressing any issues promptly are crucial for extending the life of the vehicle. Some earlier model years (2018-2020) had reports of engine issues that led to recalls, but these issues seem to be less prevalent in the 2021 model year. Always check the vehicle's history report for any past recall work or reported problems before purchasing a used Kona.

How long will the 2021 Hyundai Kona last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 Hyundai Kona can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule are key. Long-term durability depends heavily on driving habits. The engine and transmission are generally robust, but as mentioned earlier, the DCT in turbo models may require more frequent attention. The interior materials, while decent, may show wear and tear over time. Rust can become a concern in colder climates where road salt is used, so undercoating is recommended.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona boasts a respectable array of tech, entertainment, and safety features. Standard tech includes a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation and a premium Harman Kardon audio system.

Driver-assistance features include standard forward collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, and driver attention warning. Higher trims add blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision warning, and smart cruise control. These features significantly enhance safety and convenience.

Safety features include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes. The Kona generally receives good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA, but specific ratings can vary, so it's best to check their websites for the latest information. Optional features include a sunroof, leather upholstery, and LED headlights. The available head-up display is a nice touch, projecting important information onto the windshield.

2021 Hyundai Kona Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Hyundai Kona ranged from approximately $20,000 for the base SE trim to around $30,000 for the top-tier Limited or N Line trims. Current used market prices vary based on mileage, condition, and location, but expect to find them in the range of $16,000 to $24,000. The Kona depreciates at an average rate for its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level (higher trims hold value better), and the presence of desirable options. Market demand and overall economic conditions also play a role.

2021 Hyundai Kona Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Hyundai Kona is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically lower than average for its class. Fuel economy is good, especially with the base engine. Routine maintenance is relatively affordable, and Hyundai's warranty provides peace of mind. Repair costs are also generally reasonable. However, potential issues with the DCT in turbo models could lead to higher repair bills. Overall, the Kona offers a good balance of affordability and reliability.

2021 Hyundai Kona Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Hyundai Kona is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Hyundai Kona Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona competes against vehicles like the Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, Nissan Kicks, and Kia Seltos. In terms of performance, the Kona, especially with the turbo engine, offers a more engaging driving experience than the HR-V or Kicks. The CX-3 is also sporty, but has less cargo space. The Seltos offers more interior room and a similar feature set at a competitive price.

Reliability is comparable across most of these models, though the HR-V has a slightly stronger reputation. The Kona's features are generally competitive, with a good mix of standard and available equipment. Price-wise, the Kona is typically in line with its rivals. A better alternative might be the Kia Seltos if you prioritize interior space. A similar alternative would be the Mazda CX-3 if you prioritize sporty handling and don't need a large cargo area. The Nissan Kicks is a more budget-friendly option but sacrifices performance and some features. Consider the Subaru Crosstrek for standard AWD and off-road capability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Hyundai Kona a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona is a good choice for urban drivers and small families who want a stylish and fun-to-drive subcompact SUV. It's worth buying, especially if you appreciate its unique design and available turbocharged engine. A used 2021 Kona offers excellent value, particularly if you can find a well-maintained Limited or N Line trim. Consider a used model to save money, but thoroughly inspect it and check its maintenance history. If interior space is a top priority, other alternatives might be more suitable.

Excellent Choice

This is an excellent mid-size car if you're looking for something that will get you around the city. It has get up and go without even being a turbo and the gas mileage that my wife and I have achieved in this car on the highway is close to 36 miles to the gallon 😊😊😊😊😊

Love this car!!

This car has sensors on the vehicle which keeps your vehicle in the lines while driving and has bluetooth capabilities and rear back up camera. It isn't the roomest vehicle and probably not for anyone over 5'9 but it's great for me and my family.
