2007 Jeep Liberty Review: A Great Weekend Adventure Vehicle, and a Terrible Daily Driver

Rating: 3.93
Based on 70 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Jeep Liberty is a compact SUV produced by Jeep as part of its second generation (2008-2012, though this covers the prior generation, the KJ). It offers a blend of Jeep's off-road capability with on-road comfort. Key trims include the Sport and Limited. New, the price ranged from roughly $20,000 to $27,000. Its boxy styling and Jeep heritage made it popular for those seeking a rugged, capable SUV without the size of larger models.
The Good

The 2007 Jeep Liberty offers decent off-road performance and a classic Jeep design that appeals to adventure-seekers. Practical buyers appreciate its affordability, cargo space, and available four-wheel drive. The ride quality is adequate for everyday use, making it a reasonable choice for families looking for a capable and budget-friendly SUV.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2007 Jeep Liberty include its relatively poor fuel economy and somewhat unrefined engine. Owners should watch out for potential electrical issues, transmission problems, and suspension wear. The interior materials can also feel cheap compared to some competitors.

What Problems Does the 2007 Jeep Liberty Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2007 Jeep Liberty include issues with the transmission, particularly rough shifting or complete failure. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the power windows and locks, are also common. Some owners have reported problems with the suspension components, including premature wear of ball joints and bushings. The radiator and cooling system have also been known to develop leaks. There were some recalls related to the Liberty's airbag system and potential fuel leakage, so checking the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA database is recommended. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the durability of the automatic transmission and the potential for rust, especially in regions with harsh winters. Earlier model years of the KJ Liberty (2002-2004) had some specific issues related to the front suspension and fuel tank straps, while the 2007 model shared many of the same general reliability concerns as other years in its generation.

How long will the 2007 Jeep Liberty last?

With regular maintenance, a 2007 Jeep Liberty can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Lifespan is heavily influenced by driving habits and adherence to the maintenance schedule. Long-term durability is often challenged by rust, especially in colder climates. The engine itself is generally robust, but the transmission is a known weak point, requiring diligent servicing. Suspension components and electrical systems also tend to degrade over time, necessitating repairs as the vehicle ages. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing the lifespan of a 2007 Jeep Liberty.

Love it. Would purchase it again. One of the better vehicles I have owned. My favorite kick around vehicle. Always gets me around and good on gas.

The only problem I ever had was the window regulators but had them all replaced under warranty about 10 years ago and never had any problems since, bought it new back in 2007 and had the dealer complete all the maintenance every 3000 miles, be aware that the side blisters for both front seats are not leather and will tend to wear and crack over time but this only happened on the drivers side for me but I was able to buy an original OEM part to replace it. Overall great car for me.

I owned a 2005 and now currently own a 2007 and both vehicles were a complete money pit. I was never informed of all the recalls on BOTH vehicles for things that I have paid to get fixed multiple times. Honestly I thought it was a decent car to get from point a to point b but I have never felt more unsafe like I have in these jeeps. Please do your research on recalls if you buy a liberty before your car locks up and loses control

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Jeep Liberty offered basic built-in tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features included a CD player and an AM/FM radio. Higher trims, like the Limited, offered upgraded audio systems. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) available.

Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC). Optional safety features included side curtain airbags.

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) crash-test ratings for the 2007 Jeep Liberty varied. Frontal crash tests generally received a 4-star rating for the driver and passenger. Side-impact tests yielded mixed results, with some tests showing 5-star ratings for front and rear occupants and others showing lower ratings. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted crash tests, with the Liberty receiving a "Marginal" rating in the side-impact test with optional side airbags and "Poor" without. Rollover ratings were generally around 3 stars. Optional features included remote keyless entry, power windows, and power locks, which were considered modern conveniences at the time. The available navigation system was a notable tech option, although it was relatively basic compared to modern systems.

2007 Jeep Liberty Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Jeep Liberty ranged from approximately $20,000 to $27,000, depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and location. The Liberty has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, reliability concerns, and fuel economy. Resale value is affected by factors like the availability of 4WD, a clean Carfax report, and overall mechanical condition. Well-maintained examples with low mileage and desirable options (like 4WD or the Limited trim) command higher prices.

2007 Jeep Liberty Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Jeep Liberty is moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel economy is poor, leading to higher fuel expenses. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential issues with the transmission, suspension, and electrical systems. Parts are generally readily available. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential repairs, making it less economical compared to more reliable and fuel-efficient compact SUVs.

2007 Jeep Liberty Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Jeep Liberty is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Jeep Liberty Compare to Other Wagon?

Compared to rivals like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape, the 2007 Jeep Liberty falls short in several areas. The RAV4 and CR-V offer superior reliability and fuel economy, while the Escape provides a more refined on-road experience. The Liberty's off-road capability is better than most of its competitors, but its on-road handling and ride quality are less impressive.

In terms of features, the Liberty is comparable, but its dated technology and interior design are noticeable drawbacks. Price-wise, a used Liberty is often more affordable, but the potential for higher maintenance costs offsets the initial savings. For similar alternatives, consider the Suzuki Grand Vitara, which offers comparable off-road capability and price, or a slightly older Toyota 4Runner for increased reliability and longevity, albeit at a higher price point. Overall, the RAV4 and CR-V are better choices for most buyers due to their superior reliability and fuel efficiency. The Ford Escape presents a more comfortable ride.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Jeep Liberty a Good Wagon?

The 2007 Jeep Liberty is ideal for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing off-road capability over fuel efficiency and long-term reliability. It's worth buying only under specific conditions: a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. Look for well-maintained examples with documented service history, particularly focusing on transmission maintenance. The Limited trim offers more features, but the Sport trim can be a good value if in good condition. Avoid examples with rust or signs of neglect. Be prepared for potential repairs and higher running costs. Newer, more reliable alternatives may be a better long-term investment for most buyers.

A good car with some bad sides

This car is fun to drive with the 6 cylinder engine gives you a lot of power. Fun to modify the car and have cool projects on. The car is great to drive around, runs like a dream. The car seats are comfortable and the trunk is greatly designed. The hatch back window is so nice to have. Overall this is great to have but there some major problems. The car is 99% plastic inside, I don't think there is a single piece of metal in the cabin. Also horrible storage space when it comes to cup holders and such. The glovebox is super small. Even the legroom in the back is horrendous for an SUV. But due to the amount of plastic used the car won't rust out as quick. Overall the car is fun to drive due to the engine. The interior is a nightmare in my opinion but I'm glad I get to drive this car. Don't get me wrong this car is great but I definitely would change the interior of this car.

Decent car, not worth the price

I own the red 2007 Jeep Liberty and the paint peels way too easily. It is cheap and after only owning the car for a few years I have to get the entire thing repainted. The car has been very reliable and I haven't had anything too expensive need to be replaced, but prepare for bad gas mileage.

have put thousands of dollars in2007 Jeep Liberty

I love the way this vehicle handles but it has cost me thousands of dollars to do repairs on. It was only 4 years old when I got it and it has been nothing but a hair pulling experience since. I fix one thing and something else goes wrong with it. Friend has 2006 and said same thing he was ready to pull it across scales and crush it.

Not cheep on gas 13 miles on the gallon

Not cheep on gas 13 on the gallon. My Radiator keeps getting hail line cracks in it. I get it repaired then another one will show up. Transmission is soft have to keep overdrive button off or it jumps and drives ruff.

Great first car and bang for buck

This particular Jeep has given me no major problems and has served its purpose over the past 4 years. It is fun to drive and even somewhat capable off road or in the snow.
