The Good
The 2008 Jeep Liberty offers a blend of rugged capability and practicality. Its 4x4 system provides competent off-road performance (emotional appeal), while its cargo space and relatively affordable price make it a sensible choice (practical appeal). While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers reasonable reliability and comfortable seating for five. Its classic Jeep styling also appeals to those seeking a traditional SUV look.
The Bad
The 2008 Jeep Liberty has some known weaknesses. Fuel economy is subpar compared to its competitors. The four-speed automatic transmission can feel dated. Some owners report issues with the electrical system and suspension components. Premature wear of ball joints and control arm bushings are also common concerns. Be sure to inspect these areas thoroughly before purchasing a used model.

What Problems Does the 2008 Jeep Liberty Have?
Recalls for the 2008 Jeep Liberty have included issues related to the electronic stability control (ESC) system and potential fuel leaks. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to see if any recalls apply. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the durability of the suspension components, the potential for electrical gremlins, and the aging automatic transmission. Addressing these issues promptly with proper maintenance is key to prolonging the life of the vehicle. Specific model year variations in these issues are not significantly different within the 2008-2012 generation, so preventative maintenance is key.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were limited; it lacked modern features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and front airbags. Side curtain airbags were optional.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) for the 2008 Jeep Liberty varied. While it generally performed well in frontal offset crash tests, its side impact performance was rated as "Marginal" by the IIHS. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a mix of 4- and 5-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests, respectively. Overall, the safety features were adequate for the time but fall short of modern safety standards. It is important to note that the Renegade trim did not add any additional safety features, it was primarily an appearance package.

How Does the 2008 Jeep Liberty Compare to Other Wagon?
Alternatives include the Toyota RAV4, which provides superior reliability and fuel economy, or the Honda CR-V, which balances practicality and reliability effectively. The Ford Escape (especially models from later years of that generation) offers a slightly more modern feel with comparable pricing. If off-road capability isn't a primary concern, the RAV4 or CR-V are better choices due to their superior reliability and fuel efficiency. However, if you specifically need a vehicle with Jeep's rugged styling and some off-road credentials on a budget, the Liberty might still be a consideration, provided you are prepared for potential maintenance.

Should be recalledCar ran for two years on and off and had problems with it immediately. Mine was 2012 sport we bought with 60k miles. Put 30k on it. Heater core went. Tranny shot now. Should be recalled for transmission pan. From factory comes sprayed with something tranny fluid breaks down and clogs lines filters and goes through tranny as well. In process of changing my pan and filters but think it's too late. Stays stuck in second and slips like crazy. Hopefully this helps someone. Replace transmission pan and filters immediately if never haveΓβΓΒ‘

This is a beautiful disaster, don't buy! These libertys may look elegant like a poor man's Mercedes G wagon but these are to be steered away from if you're seeking a reliable family runabout. The 3.7 liter motors are designed with many manufacturing flaws and their transmissions are notoriously known to fail very early and cost a ton to fix, plus as with many other Chrysler branded vehicles rust and corrosion will probably kill this before to long in a rust belt state. I only give Chrysler and it's twin brother the dodge nitro credit for being a good design that tried but fell on its face. They are NOT cheap to fix and their build quality can sometimes become your worst nightmare in real life. Please if you value your cash, buy anything else, I'd suggest looking into a used 2008 Honda CRV, or a 2008 Toyota RAV4 over this beautiful disaster. Save your money. Jeep is not reliable at all!

2008 JEEP LIBERTY (low mileage)I only have this not quite a month now and it is a nice jeep, I think a bit of a gas guzzler somewhat but overall so far i'm very happy, its a used car with low miles so i'm not expecting perfection ... we will see but so far i like the look i've done some things to improve its look as well and overall 3.5 stars i guess is best to say. Brought with 76k miles.

2002Dodge ram able can short bed 4/4I loved it untill the transmission failed miserably by pulling a small camp trailer to California. Tried to have it replaced , But everyone I questioned about it. Stated the only Dodge could replace it . When talking to Dodge dealer, I was told the price would be $2000.00 dollars to just replace it without labor. I didn't think about checking for a recall . I scrapped it . After driving her for another 1000 miles without over drive. She even went to Prescott about 4 times from Wittmann climbing some steep mountains . And creased like a champ in 3 high for over a yr. All n all . She performed great for not having overdrive for a little over a yr. I'd say that transmission should have went down a the genius book of records. For over lasting all dodges in that condition . I loved her completely . She started losing momentum and transmission started slipping down hill . She lost 1st gear and slowed to almost 40 mph before I finely broke and to her to the grave yard.

Love jeepI used to have a jeep liberty years ago and really liked it so I was excited to find an affordable used one when looking for a new car. This is the second jeep liberty I've owned and my third jeep since I started driving. I was in a pretty bad accident in my first jeep liberty, the whole thing flipped and I walked away without even a scratch. I feel safe driving it. I also love the design and interior. For being a 2008 it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a new car (no gps, bluetooth connection, etc.) but it doesn't feel like being in an almost 15 year old car. The interior is sleek and attractive. I love everything about the look of the car inside and out. My boyfriend has a Subaru and for a while I was set on getting one but I think I'll always be a jeep girl. I just love them.

2008 Jeep Unlimited Liberty going strongI bought my Jeep in 2011, she is a 2008 Jeep Limited with 179,000 miles on it. Been driven all over the East Coast from Lake Erie lakes to Keywest. Keep up on maintenance, this model just keeps on. I love my Jeep. I smile, this model is rarely seen in junkyards. π Makes you think.

Most realiable car I've owned. This car met all of my needs, shopping and travelling. It has plent of legroom in the front and back, and a lot of space in the trunk. The power is sufficient with excellent mechanical condition. The chassis is high with great safety performance. Love it. It deserves you to have it.

I love my car.I never had any problems except I have to fill my coolant a lot so that my car doesn't overheat. But coolant is a cheap fix. Very good car but gas is awful. My car says I am getting 13.5 mpg.
