The 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class is a luxury coupe/cabriolet that builds on Mercedes' reputation for elegance and engineering. Part of the second generation (W208 chassis), model years were from 1998 to 2002. Key trims include the CLK320 (V6) and CLK430 (V8). Original pricing ranged from $40,000 to $55,000. It stood out due to its blend of sporty handling, luxurious features, and iconic Mercedes styling, appealing to buyers seeking a sophisticated and comfortable driving experience.
The Good

The 2002 CLK-Class offers a compelling blend of performance and luxury. Its powerful V6/V8 engines provide satisfying acceleration. The refined ride and comfortable interior appeal to emotional buyers seeking prestige. Practical buyers appreciate its respectable reliability (for its class), classic design, and the potential for value on the used market. While not the most efficient, it is acceptable for a luxury coupe.

The Bad

Common weaknesses of the 2002 CLK-Class include potential electrical issues, particularly with sensors and control modules. Suspension components, especially bushings and ball joints, can wear out. Rust can be a concern in certain climates. Also, check for proper function of the convertible top mechanism on cabriolet models. Maintenance can be expensive.

What Problems Does the 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems with the 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class often center around electrical components. Sensor failures (e.g., mass airflow sensor, oxygen sensors) are relatively common, leading to poor engine performance or check engine lights. Control modules can also exhibit issues. Suspension components, like ball joints, control arm bushings, and shocks/struts, tend to wear out over time, requiring replacement. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, can be a concern, particularly on older vehicles. Cabriolet models are susceptible to problems with the convertible top mechanism, including hydraulic leaks or motor failures.

Specific to the 2002 model year, there haven't been a high number of model-year specific complaints drastically differing from previous years of the W208 CLK. However, as a vehicle ages, deferred maintenance on older models becomes a more significant issue, regardless of the original model year.

Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the complexity of the vehicle. Numerous electronic systems and vacuum lines can develop leaks or malfunctions over time, requiring specialized diagnostic tools and knowledge for repair. The cost of parts and labor can be higher compared to non-luxury vehicles. Before purchasing, a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Mercedes-Benz mechanic is strongly recommended to identify any potential issues.

How long will the 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class last?

A well-maintained 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Many examples are still on the road after 20+ years, demonstrating their inherent durability. However, longevity depends heavily on consistent maintenance.

Long-term weaknesses include degradation of rubber components (hoses, seals, bushings), leading to leaks and handling issues. Electrical gremlins can surface as wiring insulation deteriorates. Automatic transmissions, while generally robust, benefit from regular fluid changes to prevent premature failure. Rust prevention is crucial for vehicles in susceptible climates. Lack of proper care will drastically shorten the lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class offered a decent array of technology for its time, though it's dated by modern standards. Standard features included automatic climate control, a premium sound system (often Bose), power seats, and keyless entry. Entertainment was typically provided by a radio with CD player; optional upgrades included a CD changer.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to today's vehicles. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, and front airbags. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) was available. Side airbags were optional.

Optional features varied depending on the trim and packages. These could include heated seats, a sunroof, upgraded sound systems, and a navigation system (which would likely be outdated now). Some models also featured an integrated phone system (also outdated).

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) can vary. Checking archive data from these organizations for the 2002 CLK-Class is recommended for specific crash-test results. In general, Mercedes-Benz vehicles of this era were known for their robust construction, contributing to good occupant protection, for the standards of the time. However, advancements in safety technology since 2002 should be considered.

2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class ranged from approximately $40,000 to $55,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices can vary dramatically based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find examples ranging from $4,000 to $12,000.

The CLK-Class has depreciated significantly, as expected for a luxury vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include: overall condition (body, interior, mechanical), maintenance records, mileage, location (rust belt vs. drier climates), and specific options (rare or desirable options can increase value). Cabriolet models tend to hold their value slightly better than coupes.

2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2002 CLK-Class is generally considered costly to own. Insurance can be higher than average due to its luxury status and potential repair costs. Fuel economy is mediocre. Maintenance and repairs, especially at a Mercedes-Benz dealer or specialist, can be expensive. Parts are often pricier than those for domestic or Asian brands. Long-term ownership requires diligent maintenance to avoid costly breakdowns. Budgeting for unexpected repairs is crucial. It's not an economical choice for budget-conscious buyers.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class competed with vehicles like the BMW 3 Series Coupe (E46), Audi A4 Cabriolet, Lexus SC 430, and Acura CL. In terms of performance, the CLK430's V8 offered competitive power, while the CLK320 was similar to the BMW 330Ci. The Lexus SC 430 offered a more luxurious and comfortable ride, but less sporty handling. The Acura CL was typically more reliable and less expensive to maintain.

Features were comparable across the class, though Mercedes often charged extra for options that were standard on competitors. Reliability is a key area where the CLK can fall short compared to the Lexus and Acura. BMW is generally considered comparable in reliability. In terms of price, the CLK typically held its value well initially, but depreciation has made used examples relatively affordable now, though maintenance costs still need to be considered.

Alternatives depend on priorities. For greater reliability and lower running costs, the Acura CL or Lexus SC 430 are better choices. For a sportier driving experience, the BMW 3 Series Coupe is a strong contender. The Audi A4 Cabriolet offers similar refinement to the CLK, but with quattro all-wheel drive available. Considering alternatives is very important due to the age of these vehicles and the potential for high maintenance costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class a Good Convertible?

The 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class is ideal for enthusiasts who appreciate classic Mercedes styling and are willing to accept the higher maintenance costs associated with an older luxury vehicle. It's worth buying *used*, but only if a thorough pre-purchase inspection is performed and the vehicle has a documented maintenance history. The CLK320 offers a better balance of performance and fuel economy for most buyers. Avoid examples with deferred maintenance or rust. It is NOT recommended for budget-conscious buyers or those seeking a trouble-free ownership experience. Only those with the time, resources, and knowledge to maintain an older European car should consider it. Be prepared for potential repairs.

Bought this with 126,000 miles on it and it is an absolute amazing car to ride. If you want to impress your peers definitely recommend. It drives so smooth compared to my former 05’ Honda civ hybrid. Good on gas, and man it picks up good. Absolutely love this car. If you take care of it (yearly maintenance) it will last you a life time.

Lovely car ,bought it new. Mercedes don’t now make one anything like as nice as my Elegance, love it , it’s now sentimental value. I am 78 years old now and buy a new car every 3 years but will never part with my CLK.

Very reliable purchase used.

I purchased used in 2019. Had some mechanical issues due to negligence and being stored. Put about $7k in to it after paying $1400 and selling my 98 chevy prism for $1000. So only out $400 for the cost of the car. Very happy with her.

Bought 2002 CLK430 convertible with 60000 KM!

Beautiful car, rock solid performance, but repairs as expected are expensive but thankfully rare (replaced ball joints and mice chewed wires for roof). Great chick magnet and lots of compliments.

Most reliable car I have ever owned!

The CLK 320 Mercedes Coupe 2002 has one of the best looking body styles ever. People consistently comment "I have always loved this car!" It is the sexist coupe Mercedes has ever ever made. I have 180,000 miles on this car and it still picks-up and goes, as it did when I purchased it with only 23,000 miles on it. I am looking for another one, ha!
