The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser is a retro-styled, capable off-road SUV inspired by the classic Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. Produced from 2006 to 2014 in the US market, its key trims included the base model and various special editions. It features a distinctive boxy body, rear-hinged access doors, and a focus on rugged capability. New pricing ranged from around $24,000-$28,000. Its unique styling and off-road prowess made it incredibly popular.
The Good

The 2010 FJ Cruiser boasts impressive off-road performance and renowned Toyota reliability, appealing to practical buyers. Its unique, retro design and go-anywhere attitude deliver an emotional connection. While not the most fuel-efficient, its strong resale value and robust build provide lasting value.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2010 FJ Cruiser include poor rear visibility due to thick pillars and small rear windows. Fuel economy is subpar. The rear access doors can be inconvenient in tight parking spaces. Check for rust, especially underneath, and ensure the 4WD system engages smoothly.

What Problems Does the 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser Have?

The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser is generally considered reliable, but there are some frequently reported problems and potential long-term concerns. Rust is a common issue, especially in areas with harsh winters and road salt usage. Inspect the undercarriage, frame, and body panels carefully for signs of corrosion.

Some owners have reported issues with the front differential actuator, which can prevent the vehicle from engaging 4WD properly. This is more common in older models, so proper maintenance and regular use of the 4WD system can help prevent this.

Another potential issue is the cracking of the front fender panels, particularly around the mounting points. While this is often cosmetic, it can worsen over time. Check for cracks and consider reinforcing the panels if necessary.

While recalls for the 2010 model are relatively infrequent, it's always a good idea to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls related to safety or emissions. Long-term reliability is generally excellent, but regular maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, and inspections, is crucial to keep the FJ Cruiser running smoothly for years to come.

How long will the 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide 15+ years of service. Many owners report reaching 300,000 miles or more. Key to longevity is regular oil changes, fluid replacements (transmission, coolant, differentials), and addressing any mechanical issues promptly. While the engine and drivetrain are generally robust, rust is the biggest long-term threat, especially in colder climates. Suspension components may also require replacement over time due to wear and tear.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser's tech and entertainment features are relatively basic by today's standards, but functional. Standard features include an AM/FM/CD audio system with auxiliary input. Optional upgrades included a premium audio system with a subwoofer and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

Driver-assistance features were limited, primarily consisting of rear parking sensors (optional).

Safety features included standard antilock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (VSC), traction control (TRAC), and side curtain airbags. It also had driver and front passenger active headrests to help reduce whiplash injuries in certain rear-end collisions.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) varied. The NHTSA gave it four stars for frontal crash protection and five stars for side crash protection. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating for moderate overlap front crash testing, but "Marginal" for side impact tests. Always consult the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most up-to-date and accurate crash test information.

Overall, the FJ Cruiser prioritized off-road capability and rugged simplicity over advanced tech and driver assistance. Its focus was on providing a safe and reliable experience in various driving conditions.

2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser Prices and Market Value

The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser had a starting MSRP of around $24,000 to $28,000 when new. Due to their popularity and off-road capabilities, used FJ Cruisers hold their value remarkably well. Expect to pay between $18,000 and $30,000+ on the used market, depending on mileage, condition, and trim. Low-mileage examples in excellent condition can command even higher prices. Factors influencing resale value include condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has desirable options like the off-road package.

2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser isn't the most economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs are moderate, while fuel economy is poor. Maintenance costs are generally reasonable, thanks to Toyota's reliability. However, repairs can be expensive, especially for off-road-related damage. Long-term ownership costs are higher than average due to fuel consumption and potential for rust repair, but its strong resale value partially offsets these expenses.

2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser competed against vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Xterra, and Hummer H3. The FJ Cruiser offered a unique blend of off-road capability and Toyota reliability, surpassing the Hummer H3 in dependability. The Jeep Wrangler, however, offers even greater off-road customization and an open-air driving experience. The Nissan Xterra provides a more utilitarian and affordable alternative, but lacks the FJ Cruiser's distinctive styling.

In terms of performance, the FJ Cruiser's V6 engine was competitive, but its fuel economy lagged behind some rivals. Feature-wise, it was more basic than some, prioritizing ruggedness over luxury. Regarding price, the FJ Cruiser generally held its value better than the Xterra and H3 on the used market.

Alternatives to consider include: a newer Jeep Wrangler for superior off-road capability and customization; a Toyota 4Runner for similar reliability but with better on-road comfort and practicality; or a used Lexus GX 470 for more luxury and off-road prowess at a similar price point. Ultimately, the FJ Cruiser's appeal lies in its distinctive styling and proven Toyota reliability, making it a solid choice for those who value these qualities.

Ranks #119 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser a Good Sedan?

The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser is ideal for off-road enthusiasts and those who appreciate its unique retro styling and legendary Toyota reliability. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, if you prioritize off-road capability and a distinctive look over fuel efficiency and modern tech features. Consider a well-maintained example with low mileage and minimal rust, ideally equipped with the off-road package. Avoid heavily modified or abused vehicles. It's not ideal as a primary family vehicle due to limited rear passenger space and cargo capacity. If you want a similar car for commuting, don't buy it.

These SUV's are so revered that low mileage ones are commanding MSRP pricing for a used vehicle! They have held their value better than any car on the market. They are reliable, fun, KOOL cars and if they still made them I would buy another. I don't think I'll ever sell it!

Most unique vehicle I ever owned.

this vehicle is such a unique styled and unique handling vehicle it has a look of its own it brings back a touch of the old fj40 while at the same time gives you a ride of a Cadillac on the highway and the ride of a true off-roader off-road It's the Best of Both Worlds and you have great I wouldn't even use the word great you're awesome awesome dependability it's a Toyota product and it's made very well buy one if you could.

Great vehicle for anyone!

Loved this vehicle, very dependable ride and great off road also. Used mainly to commute back and forth to college for my daughter. Only selling due to her needing a truck.

AWESOME RIDE

The FJ has always been love at first sight for me and I am not disappointed finally deciding to make one mine. This vehicle is used, but in excellent condition with only 63,000+ miles -- almost has a brand new look inside and out. Barely broken in for a Toyota. My 2000 4Runner purchased new had 312,000 miles and still going strong. The ride is smooth and the acceleration is great. This vehicle is totally awesome for me!

Very fun to Drive

Really enjoying this vehicle. Great off road capability but still has great manners on the street. It has a great turning radius so it is very maneuverable it tight parking lots.
