What Problems Does the 2004 Volvo S80 Have?

The 2004 Volvo S80, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Electronic issues are common, including malfunctions with the climate control system, power windows, and central locking. Wiring harness problems, particularly related to corrosion, can lead to various electrical gremlins. Suspension wear, especially bushings and control arms, is another area to watch. The T6 model's automatic transmission has been known to have issues, possibly due to the higher torque output.

Specific recalls for the 2004 S80 were related to potential fuel leakage and issues with the brake system. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information.

Long-term reliability hinges on proper maintenance. Neglecting scheduled servicing, especially oil changes, can lead to premature engine wear and turbocharger failure (on T6 and 2.5T models). Keeping an eye on fluid levels, addressing minor issues promptly, and using quality replacement parts can extend the life of the vehicle. Earlier model years of the S80 (1999-2001) had some issues with the Electronic Throttle Module (ETM), which was addressed in later years but remains a potential area of concern on older examples.

How long will the 2004 Volvo S80 last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2004 Volvo S80 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 15-20 years of service. However, neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. Regular oil changes, timing belt replacements (if applicable), and addressing minor repairs promptly are crucial.

Long-term durability often depends on rust prevention, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Weaknesses over time include suspension wear, bushing degradation, and potential electronic issues stemming from aging wiring and connectors. Turbocharger lifespan on the 2.5T and T6 models is dependent on proper oil maintenance and driving habits.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Volvo S80 came equipped with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a premium sound system (often with a CD player), dual-zone climate control, and power windows and locks. Higher trims offered features like a sunroof, leather upholstery, and upgraded audio systems.

In terms of safety, the S80 boasted standard antilock brakes (ABS), stability control, and front and side airbags. Volvo was known for its focus on safety, and the S80 reflected this. Optional safety features included Volvo's Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) in the front seats.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars. There was no adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning system available in 2004. The car relied primarily on traditional safety features and driver awareness.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA were generally positive for the 2004 Volvo S80, reflecting Volvo's commitment to occupant protection. Check these organizations' websites for specific ratings and reports.

The built-in entertainment system was fairly basic by today's standards, but the focus was on providing a comfortable and safe driving experience. The S80 prioritized safety above all else, and its design and features reflected that.

2004 Volvo S80 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Volvo S80 ranged from approximately $35,000 to $48,000 depending on the trim level and options. As a used vehicle, prices can vary widely based on mileage, condition, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $2,000 to $8,000 or potentially even lower for higher mileage examples in need of repair.

The S80 has experienced significant depreciation, which is typical for luxury sedans. Resale value is affected by factors such as maintenance history, overall condition (interior and exterior), and mileage. Lower mileage, well-maintained examples command a higher price. The T6 models may hold slightly better value due to their performance, but maintenance costs can also be higher.

2004 Volvo S80 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 Volvo S80 are typically moderate. Fuel costs depend on the engine and driving habits, with the T6 being the least economical. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the car's age, potential for specialized parts, and the complexity of its systems. Long-term ownership can be costly if maintenance is deferred. While not the most economical choice, preventative maintenance can significantly reduce overall expenses.

2004 Volvo S80 Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Volvo S80 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Volvo S80 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2004 Volvo S80 competed against cars like the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and Lexus ES 330. In terms of performance, the S80 T6 offered decent power, but the BMW and Mercedes generally provided more engaging driving dynamics. Feature-wise, the S80 was comparable to its rivals, offering similar luxury amenities. Reliability is where the Volvo potentially lagged behind the Lexus ES, known for its exceptional dependability. The German rivals also had their share of reliability concerns.

Price-wise, the used S80 is typically more affordable than its German counterparts, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. The Lexus ES 330 offers similar comfort and reliability with lower running costs and a slightly more modern feel. Other alternatives to consider could include the Acura TL, offering a balance of performance and reliability. If reliability is paramount and budget is a concern, the Lexus ES is a superior choice. If performance is key, the BMW 5-Series might be preferred, but at a higher price point and potentially higher running costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Volvo S80 a Good Sedan?

The 2004 Volvo S80 is a decent used car option for buyers prioritizing safety, comfort, and understated luxury at an affordable price. It's ideal for individuals or families seeking a comfortable cruiser rather than a performance sedan. It is worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with a thorough service history. The 2.5T offers a good balance of power and fuel economy, while the T6 provides more performance but with potentially higher maintenance costs. Get a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic familiar with Volvos before committing to a purchase. Be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs compared to some of its rivals. If reliability is your top concern, consider a Lexus ES instead.

Still going

I purchased my 2004 S80 used with 128,000 miles hoping it would last me a couple of years. That was in 2013 and it is still going strong with a few little old age quirks. The fabric is starting to pull away from the front passenger pillar by the windshield. The leather seats are worn, which is expected after 20 years of daily use. When the temperature is 35 degrees or lower it is stubborn starting, However, once it does (2nd to 3rd attempt) everything is good. I am slightly under 200k (197,779). Upkeep and repairs have included: Regular maintenance Replacement of 5 cylinders, although not at the same time. New radiator due to road construction mishap. (hit a good size pot-hole). Side mirror cover replacement because of theft. The S80 was not what I was looking for in 2013. The price was great and I took a chance. I am so glad I did. The car is not garage kept and there are not faded areas at all.

Best car I ever owned. Quick!

It's a highway star! The turbo kicks in after about 40mph and slingshots you forward. I loved driving on the hwy with this car, super comfy Euro design interior. Hate to see it go but got a newer one.

safe and comfortable

This Volvo exceeds in comfort and drivability. It is very well built and that makes a driver feel safe and knowing the car is reliable to keep me going down the road. Has many more ammenities then I actually need, and they never rust. I've owned several Volvo's over the years and not one of them has ever rusted and I live in Michigan where rust is the beast that kills most vehicles.

Average at best

The 2004 Volvo S80 is a very average car at best due to the interior being very boring. Nothing very intriguing about the car at all besides maybe the comfort of the seats and the spacious interior. It does have slight upside with it being a 5 cylinder, so it does not guzzle gas. Nothing about the exterior is exciting, just another average car.

Great Car For Anyone

This car is very safe, comfortable, powerful and retains luxury features. The car phone is cool feature that's out of place but nostalgic. The mini fridge has been surprisingly helpful as times. Weather this would be your first car or last one it's a great one. It German power and luxury without getting all of the looks of BMW or Mercedes

Perfect Car

Never one bad thing to say about this car. Beautiful and comfortable. Mine had every option available in 2004 on this model. Everything worked really well. My one caution is that part replacement can take a long time to arrive and sometimes costly. Ouch. But worth it. This body style better than today's version.
