The 2014 Volvo S80 is a mid-size luxury sedan, representing Volvo's commitment to safety, comfort, and understated elegance. Part of the S80's second generation (2006-2016), the 2014 model offered key trims like the T5, T6, and Executive. Known for its comfortable ride, spacious interior, and reputation for safety, the 2014 S80 had an original MSRP ranging from around $40,000 to $50,000+, depending on the trim and options. Its popularity stemmed from its blend of luxury and practicality, appealing to buyers prioritizing safety and a refined driving experience over outright sportiness.
The Good

The 2014 Volvo S80 offers a comfortable and quiet ride, making it ideal for long journeys. It boasts a reputation for safety and reliability, appealing to practical buyers. The elegant Scandinavian design and luxurious interior offer an emotional connection, while its reasonable fuel efficiency and value for money add to its appeal. Certain engine options provide adequate performance.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 Volvo S80 include a less sporty driving experience compared to some rivals. The infotainment system can feel dated. Some owners have reported issues with electronic components and the climate control system. It's crucial to check for regular maintenance records and any signs of prior accidents or neglect before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2014 Volvo S80 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Volvo S80 can include issues with the electronic systems, such as the infotainment screen freezing or malfunctioning. Some owners have reported problems with the climate control system, including inconsistent temperature regulation or failure. Oil leaks are another potential concern, particularly in higher-mileage examples, so inspecting the engine for leaks is crucial. Suspension components, such as struts and bushings, may require replacement over time due to wear and tear. Check engine lights can illuminate for various reasons, so a diagnostic scan is essential to pinpoint the problem.
Recalls can vary, so checking the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for any outstanding recalls specific to the 2014 Volvo S80 is recommended before purchasing. Long-term reliability can be affected by maintenance habits. Neglecting scheduled maintenance, such as oil changes and fluid flushes, can lead to premature component failure. The turbocharged engines (T5 and T6) require synthetic oil and careful attention to prevent turbocharger issues. The automatic transmissions, while generally reliable, benefit from regular fluid changes to ensure smooth operation and longevity. Early model years of the S80's second generation (prior to 2014) had some reported concerns; the 2014 is generally considered more reliable, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection is still advisable.

How long will the 2014 Volvo S80 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Volvo S80 can realistically achieve 200,000 miles or more. Average annual mileage is about 12,000 - 15,000 miles, so many examples will have well over 100,000 miles. Long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance. Weaknesses can emerge in the suspension, electrical systems, and climate control as the car ages. Turbocharged engines require diligent care to prevent issues. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. Regular fluid changes and addressing minor issues promptly will extend the lifespan.

My first one lasted 15 yrs and nearly 200k miles. This one much faster, gets better mileage and glides so smoothly. A true luxury sedan. Test drove the Bmw 5 series and this is as good and better for a bit less to buy and lower overall cost to maintain. Only a tiny bit slower in 0 to 60, not worth the extra $$unless you are a speed freak.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Volvo S80 came equipped with a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features included a premium sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims often included a navigation system, rearview camera, and adaptive cruise control. Volvo's emphasis on safety is evident, with standard features like anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional safety features included blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and collision warning with automatic braking.
The infotainment system, while functional, can feel dated compared to newer systems. It typically consisted of a central display screen and physical buttons for controlling various functions. The navigation system, if equipped, could be cumbersome to use. The driver-assistance features helped enhance safety and convenience, but they weren't as advanced as those found in some newer vehicles.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are generally positive, reflecting Volvo's commitment to safety. Checking these ratings specific to the 2014 model year is recommended for detailed information. Overall, the 2014 S80 provided a solid array of safety and convenience features, though the technology may feel less modern by today's standards.

2014 Volvo S80 Prices and Market Value

The 2014 Volvo S80 had a starting MSRP in the low $40,000s, with higher trims reaching into the $50,000s. Used market prices currently range from approximately $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation has been significant, typical for luxury sedans. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and geographical location. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and documented maintenance records command higher prices. The availability of desirable options, like the T6 engine or premium audio system, can also positively impact resale value.

2014 Volvo S80 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2014 Volvo S80 are generally moderate, similar to other luxury sedans in its class. Fuel costs will depend on the engine choice, with the T6 consuming more fuel than the 3.2L. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the vehicle's European origins and potential for specialized parts. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate if the vehicle is well-maintained, but unexpected repairs can make it costly. It is not considered the most economical vehicle to own compared to mainstream brands.

Insurance for a 2014 Volvo S80 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Volvo S80 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Volvo S80 competes with vehicles like the Acura TL, Lexus ES, Buick LaCrosse, and Lincoln MKZ. In terms of performance, the S80 T6 offered decent power but lacked the sporty handling of some rivals. Feature-wise, it was competitive but the infotainment system felt dated. Reliability is generally good, but some electronic issues have been reported. Price-wise, it often offered a good value proposition on the used market.
Compared to the Lexus ES, the S80 may not be as reliably bulletproof, but offered a more distinctive style. The Acura TL provided a sportier driving experience. The Buick LaCrosse offered a similar level of comfort at a potentially lower price point. The Lincoln MKZ provided more modern styling, especially on newer model years.
Alternatives depend on priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Lexus ES is a strong choice. For a sportier drive, the Acura TL is a better bet. If a comfortable and spacious ride is the key factor, then the Buick LaCrosse may be a similar or better option. Each has trade offs to consider. The 2014 Volvo S80 can be a good choice if comfort, safety, and understated luxury are desired at a reasonable price, but buyers should be aware of potential maintenance costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Volvo S80 a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Volvo S80 is ideal for buyers seeking a comfortable, safe, and understated luxury sedan at a reasonable price point on the used market. It's best suited for those who prioritize comfort and safety over sporty handling or cutting-edge technology. It can be worth buying if a thorough pre-purchase inspection is performed and maintenance records are available. A well-maintained T6 model offers a good balance of performance and luxury. Avoid examples with neglected maintenance or accident damage. Opt for higher trims if desired features like navigation and advanced safety systems are important. Overall, if bought wisely, it is still a viable option.

Comfortable sedan with top seats and top looks

I've bought a 2014 Volvo S80 T6 AWD and I can completely recommend this car to everyone who likes reliable, comfortable and fun to drive cars. The Volvo comes fully loaded with power everything, I dont miss anything in the Platinum Model. Drives great, seats are very very good and I like the Swedish look of the S80. A perfect car!

LOVE THIS CAR!

I had never owned a Volvo prior to purchasing my new 2014 S80. I had looked at Audi, but model that I wanted was too expensive. I was able to special order my S80 (top model) loaded for much less than a lower model Audi. This car drives like a dream and really has the power too at 300 hp turbo V6. Extremely comfortable and excellent technology. New front end and chrome accents make the 2014 beautiful. Extremely happy with purchase!
