What Problems Does the 2012 Volvo S80 Have?

The 2012 Volvo S80, while generally reliable, does have some frequently reported problems. Issues with the electronic systems, such as the infotainment screen freezing or malfunctioning, can occur. Some owners have reported problems with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting or delayed engagement, especially at higher mileages. Oil leaks from the engine or transmission are also potential concerns.
Recalls are relatively infrequent, but it's always best to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information specific to the vehicle's VIN. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the cost of repairs, as Volvo parts and service can be more expensive than some competitors. Ensuring regular and proper maintenance is crucial to mitigating these risks. Earlier model years of the second-generation S80 (2007-2009) had more reported issues with the suspension and climate control systems, but by 2012, many of these issues had been addressed or refined. However, it's still essential to have any used S80 inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchase to identify any potential problems.

How long will the 2012 Volvo S80 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Volvo S80 can easily achieve 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 10-15 years of reliable service. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting regular servicing, especially oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, can significantly shorten the lifespan. Common weaknesses over time include potential issues with the suspension components, electronic systems (sensors and modules), and the eventual need for replacement of wear items like brake components and hoses. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Volvo S80 boasts a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard entertainment includes a premium sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, and Volvo's Sensus infotainment system, which can feel somewhat dated compared to newer systems. Driver-assistance features include available blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.
Regarding safety, Volvo has always prioritized safety, and the S80 is no exception. Standard features include antilock brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags. Optional features included Volvo's City Safety system, which could automatically brake at low speeds to avoid or mitigate collisions.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally positive, with the S80 earning good ratings in most categories. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings are also typically favorable. Check both agencies' websites for specific ratings for the 2012 model year. Optional rear-seat entertainment systems were also available, adding DVD players and screens for passenger enjoyment.

2012 Volvo S80 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Volvo S80 had an MSRP ranging from approximately $39,000 to $50,000, depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The S80 has depreciated significantly due to its age and the general depreciation curve of luxury sedans. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition (maintenance records, accident history), mileage, and the specific trim level (T6 models tend to hold their value slightly better). The overall demand for used luxury sedans also influences pricing.

2012 Volvo S80 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2012 Volvo S80 are generally moderate, similar to other luxury sedans in its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the base engine, but can be higher with the T6. Maintenance and repair costs can be more expensive compared to non-luxury brands, as Volvo parts and labor tend to be pricier. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate if the vehicle is well-maintained, but unexpected repairs can make it costly. It's not the most economical choice, but not excessively expensive either.

2012 Volvo S80 Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Volvo S80 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a S80 with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Volvo S80 Compare to Other S80?

The 2012 Volvo S80 competes with other luxury sedans like the Acura TL, Lexus ES, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. In terms of performance, the S80's T6 engine is competitive, but the base engine is less exciting than some rivals. Features are generally good, but the infotainment system lags behind newer offerings from competitors. Reliability is decent, but the Lexus ES is generally considered more reliable. Price-wise, the S80 often represents a good value on the used market.
Alternatives to consider include:
* **Lexus ES:** Known for exceptional reliability and a comfortable ride.
* **Acura TL:** Offers a sportier driving experience and strong reliability.
* **BMW 5 Series:** Delivers superior performance and a more engaging driving experience but can be more expensive to maintain.
* **Mercedes-Benz E-Class:** Provides a luxurious interior and advanced technology, but also comes with higher ownership costs.
Depending on priorities (reliability, performance, budget), one of these alternatives might be a better fit.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Volvo S80 a Good S80?

The 2012 Volvo S80 is ideal for buyers seeking a comfortable, safe, and understated luxury sedan at a reasonable price point on the used market. It's a good choice for those who prioritize safety and a relaxed driving experience over outright performance or the latest technology. It's worth buying if you can find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history. The T6 model offers a noticeable performance upgrade. Buying used is the only realistic option at this point, and a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is strongly recommended to avoid potential expensive repairs down the road. Avoid neglected examples with high mileage and no service records.

Eye catching class

I bought a black 2012 s80 t6 platinum and inscription package with 126k miles about 2 months ago.we had a volvo in the 70s..a 340D..loved that car and any other make would not gsve saved my brothers life When he hit a pier head on with 4 buddies in the car. Anyways my S80 is a beautiful looking car...and as soon as i planted my butt in the heated lesther seats i sank into them with a sigh of pleasure Never have i sat in a car seat like these..certainly a comgortable throne fit for a king I tinted the windows and got 2 out of round rims fixed had volvo jet out the carbon deposits in engine. Replaced all filters and fluids and took her out on the highway and she performed like a purring cheetah with her 300 hp t6 engine she exploded with pace. I love the car and i hope it will be my last.i feel right at home in the car .everyone compliments me on it. ..it gets around 20/21 around town.and anout 26 to 37 on highway..i drove from nyc to lake placid and was falling asleep so i asked my wife to drive it just south of albany..i fell asleep quickly but woke up to a blizzard and my wife doing 85 mph..i flipped out abd told her how dangerous foung this was..she just looked at me with a smile and said.."its a fast car honey no one is passing me"..well my filipina wife ( who never drove in snow storm) says ..no one is passing us..i said please pullover and i would drive the rest of way..the car handles heavily on mountain bendy roads and as storm got heavier i switched to winter mode ( put into manual and drive in 3rd gear) the car stuck to the roaD like glue in the snow with all season radials..the car performed like a champ all trip..my love affair with the car continues and i just hope it last for ever...its the furst time a car ever actually made me feel happy..literally I hope the cost of maintenace wont be that bad and we keep on chugging along

Elegant & Refined

I really like this car. The styling is sedate, it doesn't draw attention to itself. It doesnt need to. Materials are of excellent quality. I have the 3.2L and it has more than enough performance for me. Its a large family sedan, not a sports car. Feels solid and safe.

Very comfortable car!

Bought at 2014 with 22000 km from daily rental now 100000 km. daily driving, very comfortable ride. The Volvo's sound system the best! Over all has no issues, windshield was replaced at 96000 km. due to leaking. Regular maintenance, brake pads, rotors, that's it!

Best pre-owned car purchased

I've had the car now for 3 years and no issues whatsoever---great value and the Volvo pre-owned warranty program is the best ever.

This car has made me a Volvo for life driver

This car is not only highly dependable, but thoughtfully designed. This car presents a great value. One critique would be the oddly balanced convenience packages. Most expected items such as navigation are not standard.

This car excites me every time I drive it

This has been the best vehicle I have owned thus far. The performance and styling are hard to compare. I have never doubted whether purchasing this car was a good decision. It certainly makes a confident statement.

Back in the Family

As previous Volvo owners (V70), my wife wanted a S60 naughty car but in 2011 the AWD was priced out of reach. The current lease specials caught our eye and went to the dealership only to find a great S80 certified at a good price instead. It is nice to be back in the Volvo family and this car is a dream. My wife loves the feeling of safety she gets when driving. It is quick on its feet, smooth and a pleasure to drive. Love the front seats.....best in the world. Car is not as showy as MB or BMW but built just as well. Dealership was a dream to work with. Looking forward to years with the car.

Great car at a great price

When you sit down in this car and experience the great comfort you will be instantly impressed. This is by far the best riding most luxurious car for the money I have ever owned. The safety equipment, the stereo sound quality and the ride are just fantastic. I think for the price compared to comparable features in other higher end sedans that it just can't be beat. Test drive one today!
