What Problems Does the 2010 Volvo S80 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 Volvo S80 can include issues with the electronic systems, such as the infotainment screen, sensors, and various control modules. Some owners have reported problems with the climate control system and power windows. Engine issues, although less common, can occur, particularly with the V8 models, involving oil consumption or timing chain concerns. Suspension components, like struts and bushings, may require replacement over time.

Recalls for the 2010 Volvo S80 were issued for potential fuel pump relay failures, which could lead to engine stalling. Owners should check the NHTSA website for any specific recalls affecting their vehicle's VIN. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the complexity of the systems and the potential for expensive repairs. Regular maintenance, following the recommended service schedule, is crucial to minimizing problems.

While the 2010 model generally doesn't have specific, unique issues compared to other years in the S80's generation, it's important to be aware that any 10+ year old luxury vehicle may require more attention and maintenance than a newer car. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic are highly recommended to identify potential problems before buying a used 2010 Volvo S80.

How long will the 2010 Volvo S80 last?

A well-maintained 2010 Volvo S80 can easily achieve 200,000 miles or more. Years of service largely depend on maintenance habits. Consistent oil changes, timely repairs, and adherence to the manufacturer's recommended service schedule are crucial. Neglecting maintenance can lead to premature wear and tear. Long-term durability can be affected by the electronic systems, which may require attention as the vehicle ages. Suspension components are also a common wear item. Rust can be a concern in regions with harsh winters, so checking for corrosion is essential. Overall, with proper care, the S80 can provide many years of reliable service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Volvo S80 came standard with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. The standard entertainment system included a CD player, satellite radio capability, and an auxiliary input. Higher trims offered a premium sound system. Navigation was available as an optional feature.

Driver-assistance features were more advanced for the era, with options like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring (BLIS), and parking sensors. These features enhanced safety and convenience. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and a comprehensive suite of airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were generally high. The S80 was designed with a strong safety cage and crumple zones to protect occupants in the event of a collision. Optional features like the Collision Warning with Auto Brake system further enhanced safety. While the technology might seem dated compared to modern vehicles, the S80 was well-equipped for its time and prioritized occupant safety. Volvo's commitment to safety is evident in the S80's design and features.

2010 Volvo S80 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Volvo S80 ranged from approximately $37,000 to $50,000 depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices range from around $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The S80 has depreciated significantly due to its age and luxury car status. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it's equipped with desirable options like navigation or the upgraded audio system. Models with lower mileage and a clean title will command higher prices. The presence of service records also improves resale value.

2010 Volvo S80 Cost of Ownership

Long-term ownership costs for the 2010 Volvo S80 can be moderate to high. Insurance costs are typically average for a luxury sedan. Fuel costs depend on the engine choice, with the V8 being the most expensive. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the car's European engineering and potential for specialized parts. While fuel economy isn't stellar, the biggest cost factor is likely to be maintenance and repairs as the car ages. Therefore, it's not the most economical choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2010 Volvo S80 Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Volvo S80 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Volvo S80 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2010 Volvo S80 competes with other mid-size luxury sedans like the Acura TL, Lexus ES 350, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. In terms of performance, the BMW 5 Series offers a more engaging driving experience. The Lexus ES 350 excels in reliability and comfort. The Acura TL provides a sportier driving experience than the S80, but without sacrificing comfort significantly. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers more advanced technology and a more luxurious interior but comes at a higher price point.

The S80 stands out for its safety and comfortable ride. However, it may lack the driving dynamics of the BMW or the rock-solid reliability of the Lexus. In terms of price on the used market, the S80 is often more affordable than the German rivals.

Alternatives to consider include the Lexus ES 350 for its superior reliability and the Acura TL for a balance of sportiness and luxury. If a more engaging driving experience is desired, the BMW 5 Series is a better choice, but be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. For buyers prioritizing safety and comfort on a budget, the S80 is a reasonable option, but thoroughly inspect it before purchase.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Volvo S80 a Good Sedan?

The 2010 Volvo S80 is ideal for buyers who prioritize safety, comfort, and understated luxury on a budget. It's worth buying as a used car if it's been well-maintained and inspected thoroughly. It's best suited for those who don't require the latest technology or the most engaging driving experience. Specific trims like the T6 offer a good balance of power and features. However, be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs compared to some rivals. Avoid neglected examples with high mileage or a lack of service history. A pre-purchase inspection is a must. If reliability is paramount, consider a Lexus ES instead.

S80 Above Average Experience

Purchased my 2010 Volvo S80 used with 89k miles. I now have over 215k miles and the car has remained very reliable with only minor repairs required during my ownership. This was my first Volvo experience. Here are a couple things worth noting for those considering this vehicle. By far the most enjoyable vehicle I have owned for long distance driving. My fatigue is minimal when driving this car compared to others. The 3.2L engine is very smooth and powerful. 3,500lb towing capacity! I’ve been able to pull my 2k lb boat on multiple vacations over 1k miles with out issues. Parts are available at FCP Euro for a reasonable price if you are handy and can perform minor maintenance on your own. This has saved me significantly. I love the the premium sound system, seats and ride quality. After 215k miles, the car is still tight with little noise. Build quality is exceptional. I’ve enjoyed this car so much that I purchased a 2012 S80 T6 AWD recently. Having driven both, I’m indifferent from a commuting perspective on the extra hp. I find the 3.2 is more than adequate with torque and acceleration and returns on average 26mpg. The 2010 remains in the family and I have no doubt it will achieve 250k miles. Excellent work Volvo!

A car you can really trust in.

Owned my 2010 s80 t6 for 6 years and couldn't be more proud. The kinda car you get compliments of and ages like no other if you take care of the basic stuff. It's not a sports car but it can smoke so many newer vehicles out there that will put a smile on your face every time u drive it. It feels solid like a tank, wonderful ride, sound system is amazing, and it's definitely a reliable over built machine. Be obsessed with your maintenance, flush your transmission every 30k no matter what anyone says and this thing will take you to the moon.

Excellent car without being ostentious.

Has all safety features long time ago, long before the current claims by many other cars. Very sporty and stylish, and yet very functional. Comfortable in long distance driving. Nice luxury features.
