The 2008 Honda Element is a unique crossover SUV known for its boxy design and versatile interior. Produced from 2003 to 2011, the Element quickly gained popularity for its functionality. Key trims included the base DX, LX, and the more equipped EX. The 2008 models are typically priced in the used market from around $6,000 to $12,000, depending on condition and mileage. Its standout features include a durable interior with easy-to-clean surfaces and removable rear seats.
The Good

The 2008 Honda Element offers a blend of practicality and unique design. It's known for its Honda reliability and surprisingly nimble performance. Its spacious and easily cleaned interior appeals to practical buyers, while its distinctive, almost quirky styling resonates emotionally with those seeking something different. Fuel efficiency is decent for its class, adding to its overall value.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2008 Honda Element include its somewhat noisy cabin, especially at highway speeds, and the plastic body panels, which can be prone to scratches and fading. Also, some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system and potential rust in areas with heavy salt use during winter. The rear-hinged back doors can be awkward in tight parking spaces.

What Problems Does the 2008 Honda Element Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Honda Element are relatively minor, but include issues with the air conditioning compressor failing, particularly in high-mileage vehicles. Some owners have reported premature brake wear and occasional issues with the power windows. Rust can be a concern in areas with road salt usage.

Recalls for the 2008 Honda Element were related to potential issues with the side airbags and the possibility of fuel leakage due to a faulty fuel pump relay. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to verify if all recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns generally center around the age of the vehicle. Rubber components like hoses and seals can degrade over time, leading to leaks. The plastic body panels are durable but can fade or become scratched. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to maintaining the Element's reliability. Overall, the 2008 Element enjoys a good reputation for reliability, but age-related wear and tear should be expected.

How long will the 2008 Honda Element last?

Given responsible maintenance, a 2008 Honda Element can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles with regular servicing. Years of service can extend well beyond 15 years.

Long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance. Weaknesses over time include potential rust in colder climates, degradation of rubber components (hoses, belts), and wear on suspension parts. Keeping up with fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) is critical. The Element's engine is known for its longevity if properly maintained. The key is proactive care to address minor issues before they become major problems.

I've owned my lx 2008 Honda Element FWD 5 speed manual transmission since i bought it new… replaced 1 alternator, 1 water pump, i'm on my 3rd clutch but i also have almost 400,000 miles on it it's more than paid for itself and still runs great… I'd trust it to go anywhere

THIS BABY MAY NOT LOOK LIKE MUCH BUT OH HOW LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING. PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW NOT TO JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. THE GOAT, HANDS DOWN.

I owned a 2006 model for 6 yrs, bought it new and put 298,000 miles on it. Honda stopped making them in 2011. When I went to buy another I couldn't find one newer or one under 150,000 miles on it. Fast forward to 2019 and I found a 2008 EX Model with only 75,000 original miles on it and I snapped it up! Love this vehicle, so roomy and easy to take care of!
Negative Owner Reviews

When driving in cruise, even the slightest uphill on the highway leads to downshifting. I didn't like the steering feel, lacked a sense of holding a straight line. Gas milage was quite good, 25mpg on long trips. Usefullness of interior a plus, will easily hold 2 bicycles without having to dismantle them.
al
when door locks are activated or brakes are applied( hard to stop car), the vehicle sometimes stalls and the electrical system fails. The dealer can't find the problem and cannot duplicate it. The vehicle is about 6 weeks old and has about 1200 miles.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Honda Element's built-in tech was relatively basic for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. The EX trim added MP3/WMA playback and an auxiliary input jack. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems available.

Safety features included standard front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS). The EX trim added side airbags. Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) was an available option.

Optional features were limited, primarily consisting of accessories like roof racks, cargo organizers, and upgraded audio systems.

Crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the 2008 Honda Element are generally good. It received four-star ratings for frontal crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Element a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact tests. The lack of modern driver-assistance tech is a drawback compared to newer vehicles, but its solid crash test scores provide reassurance.

2008 Honda Element Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Honda Element ranged in price from approximately $19,000 to $24,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $12,000, but can vary depending on condition, mileage, and location.

The Element has held its value reasonably well due to its unique styling and reputation for reliability. Depreciation has been slower compared to some other SUVs of the same era. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), and whether the vehicle has been well-maintained. Models with 4WD tend to command a slightly higher price.

2008 Honda Element Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Honda Element is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Honda Element Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Honda Element competed with vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, and Nissan Xterra. Compared to the RAV4, the Element offered a more utilitarian interior but less refined driving experience. The Forester provided better all-weather capability and similar reliability. The Xterra was more rugged but less fuel-efficient and reliable.

In terms of features, the Element lagged behind some rivals in available technology. However, its unique cargo-carrying ability and easy-to-clean interior set it apart. Reliability is a strong point for the Element, comparable to the RAV4 and Forester.

Considering price, the Element generally falls in the middle of its class in the used market.

Similar alternatives include the Scion xB (for its boxy styling and practicality) and the Honda CR-V (for a more refined driving experience). If off-road capability is a priority, the Subaru Forester might be a better choice. For a blend of practicality and modern features, a newer, used Toyota RAV4 might also be preferable.

Ranks #293 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Honda Element a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Honda Element is ideal for those seeking a practical, versatile, and reliable vehicle with a unique style. It's well-suited for active individuals, pet owners, and those who frequently haul cargo. Whether it's worth buying depends on the condition and price. A well-maintained Element with reasonable mileage can be a great value.

Since it's only available used, look for examples with a clean title, service records, and minimal rust. The EX trim is generally preferred for its added features like side airbags and an upgraded audio system. If you need 4WD, make sure it's functional. Overall, the 2008 Honda Element remains a compelling choice for the right buyer, offering a blend of functionality and personality that's hard to find elsewhere.

THIS BABY MAY NOT LOOK LIKE MUCH BUT OH HOW LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING. PERFECT EXAMPLE OF HOW NOT TO JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. THE GOAT, HANDS DOWN.

2008 Honda Element

It 2021 and I still own my 2008 Honda Element EX AWD truck/SUV. I love it so much, that I probably need to think about buying a new automobile but I can not part with it. My husband said in order to buy something new we need to let your Honda go - so I still have it. Runs wonderful and people never believe what i can haul in it. It also still looks great. I just wish that Honda would bring it back.

Second Element Owner

I owned a 2006 model for 6 yrs, bought it new and put 298,000 miles on it. Honda stopped making them in 2011. When I went to buy another I couldn't find one newer or one under 150,000 miles on it. Fast forward to 2019 and I found a 2008 EX Model with only 75,000 original miles on it and I snapped it up! Love this vehicle, so roomy and easy to take care of!

Great vehicle for farm and outdoor activities

Exceeds my needs. Great vehicle, Runs and handles great, quick when it needs to be. Rides well, tons of space for packing it full. Great for our farm, rubber floors are easy to clean. You can literally get a calf in the back. Rear seats fold up and out of your way leaving a huge area for whatever you need to put in it.

Utility Plain and Simple

The Honda Element is a striking looking car, that folks tend to love or hate. We happen to love it, for not just its looks, but also its inspiration and functionality. Its a car you want to take on a road trip or camping, and one that won't let you down with home projects and hauling things to and fro.

Perfect dog car!

I love this car! The only downside I?ve found so far is gas mileage, but I knew about that before I purchased it. I love the space and the flexibility of this vehicle! I have a dog with limited mobility, and he has a much easier time getting in this vehicle than he did getting into my Elantra. In fact, both dogs just seem more relaxed in this vehicle. Yes, I did buy this vehicle do that our family had a proper car for errands and trips with the dogs. Love the way it looks and handles! I was surprised by the amount of pick-up it had. So comfortable on the inside. I definitely picked a winner!

I wish they still made these.

Loved this car. It was quick in traffic even with the small engine. Freeways were ok too. Lots of room for me (6' 4"). Easy to get in and out of. Easy to load through the rear hatch. Very reliable.
