The 2010 Honda Element is a unique crossover SUV known for its boxy design and incredibly practical interior. Produced from 2003 to 2011, the Element was offered in trims like LX, EX, and SC. Its standout feature is its easy-to-clean interior with stain-resistant seats and a versatile cargo area. Original pricing ranged approximately from $20,000 to $25,000, but used prices vary greatly depending on condition and mileage. It gained popularity for its adventurous spirit and pet-friendly design.
The Good

The 2010 Honda Element offers notable reliability, a comfortable ride, and a supremely functional design. Its fuel efficiency is decent for its class. It appeals to practical buyers with its durable interior and cargo capacity, while emotionally, it offers a unique, adventurous image and pet-friendly attributes, making it a versatile and dependable choice.

The Bad

The 2010 Honda Element's weaknesses include its somewhat dated styling and average fuel economy compared to newer crossovers. Some owners report wind noise at highway speeds due to its boxy shape. Rust can be a concern in certain climates, so inspect the undercarriage. The rear clamshell doors, while unique, can be cumbersome in tight parking spaces.

What Problems Does the 2010 Honda Element Have?

The 2010 Honda Element is generally considered a reliable vehicle, but some common issues and concerns have been reported. One of the more frequent complaints involves the paint, which can be prone to chipping or fading, especially on darker colors. Rust can also be a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winter conditions where road salt is used. Inspecting the undercarriage and rocker panels for rust is crucial.
Mechanically, the Element is relatively sound. However, some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, particularly compressor failure, although this isn't widespread. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes, is critical for engine longevity. The automatic transmission is generally reliable, but ensuring fluid changes are performed according to Honda's recommendations is essential.
Recalls for the 2010 Honda Element have been relatively minor and focused on issues like potential problems with the side marker lights or airbag inflators. It's important to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls related to your specific vehicle. Long-term reliability concerns are minimal if the vehicle has been well-maintained. Premature wear of suspension components, like struts and bushings, can occur over time, especially on vehicles driven frequently on rough roads. Overall, the 2010 Element maintains a good reputation for dependability.

How long will the 2010 Honda Element last?

With good maintenance, a 2010 Honda Element can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles with regular servicing. Key to longevity is consistent oil changes, transmission fluid replacements, and addressing minor issues promptly. Weaknesses over time can include suspension wear, particularly bushings and struts. Rust, especially in colder climates, can shorten the lifespan. Neglecting maintenance will significantly reduce its lifespan. A well-cared-for Element can provide 15+ years of reliable service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Honda Element offered a relatively basic suite of built-in tech and safety features for its time. The standard entertainment system included a CD player with MP3 compatibility and an auxiliary input jack. The EX trim added a seven-speaker audio system with steering wheel-mounted controls. A navigation system was an available option. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, primarily consisting of standard anti-lock brakes (ABS).
Safety features included front airbags, side-curtain airbags, and anti-lock brakes. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was standard. Optional side-impact airbags were available.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally good for the 2010 Honda Element. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating in most crash tests. NHTSA awarded it four out of five stars in frontal crash tests and five stars in side-impact crash tests. These safety features, combined with the vehicle's solid construction, contributed to its reputation as a safe and reliable choice for families and individuals alike. While lacking advanced driver-assistance systems common in newer cars, the Element provided adequate safety for its era.

2010 Honda Element Prices and Market Value

The 2010 Honda Element had a starting MSRP of around $20,000 to $25,000 when new, depending on the trim level. Current used market prices generally range from $8,000 to $15,000, but this varies significantly based on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been moderate, especially for well-maintained examples. Factors affecting resale value include low mileage, a clean title, absence of rust, and desirable features like 4WD. The Element's unique design and loyal following contribute to its relatively strong resale value compared to other vehicles of similar age.

2010 Honda Element Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Honda Element is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent, but not exceptional. Maintenance costs are reasonable due to Honda's reliability and readily available parts. Repair costs are usually predictable, with no major known expensive issues. Long-term ownership is relatively affordable if regular maintenance is performed. Overall, it offers a balanced combination of initial cost and ongoing expenses, making it a budget-friendly choice.

2010 Honda Element Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Honda Element is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Honda Element Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2010 Honda Element competed with vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Nissan Xterra, and Subaru Forester. Compared to the RAV4, the Element offered a more utilitarian interior and unique styling, but the RAV4 had slightly better fuel economy and more traditional SUV features. The Nissan Xterra was more rugged and off-road capable, but less fuel-efficient and had a less comfortable interior. The Subaru Forester provided standard all-wheel drive and a more car-like driving experience, but lacked the Element's versatile cargo area.
In terms of reliability, the Element is on par with the RAV4, both having excellent reputations. The Xterra is generally reliable but not as refined. The Forester is also reliable, but its all-wheel-drive system can require more maintenance over time. Price-wise, the Element was typically similar to the RAV4 and Forester.
Alternatives to the Element include the Scion xB (for its boxy shape and practicality, though smaller), the Honda CR-V (for a more conventional and fuel-efficient option), and the Subaru Outback (for its versatility and all-wheel drive). If off-roading is a priority, the Xterra is a better choice. However, for a unique, durable, and practical crossover with good reliability, the Element holds its own.

Ranks #282 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Honda Element a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2010 Honda Element is ideal for individuals or small families who prioritize practicality, durability, and a unique design. It's particularly well-suited for outdoor enthusiasts, pet owners, and those who frequently haul cargo. A used 2010 Element is worth buying if it has been well-maintained and shows no signs of significant rust or damage. The EX trim offers a good balance of features. Avoid models with excessive mileage or a history of neglect. If you need serious off-road capability or prioritize fuel efficiency above all else, other SUVs might be a better fit. However, for a versatile and reliable crossover, the Element remains a compelling choice.

Love my Element!

This is my second Honda Element and it is perfect for transporting 1 large dog and 2 cats in kennels to the mountain cabin and return. The roomy interior is comfortable and it has no problem at all with snow. Not the best gas mileage but I wouldn't drive anything else!

Love my Element

This is the second Element that I have owned. I love the versatility that it has. I can haul everything that I want to then take a house and clean it out if needed. It's not for everyone but is great for me.

The Boxy Classic - Move People & Stuff Anywhere

The Good: * Easy to drive, maneuver, park * High truck-like seating - you cruise on top of the world * Multiple configurations: Back seats in, up, or removed * Handles dirt, gravel, snow, sand with ease * Easy to clean the inside - use a leaf blower to instantly evacuate debris from the rubber floors * Reliable - no problems with regular maintenance - 72000 miles and we just replaced the brakes and tires this year THE FLAWS: * Not much power - handles hills OK, but no fast acceleration on to a freeway * For people with limited mobility it can be hard to get in and out * Suicide doors - have to open front door to open back door * Pretty basic interior - look elsewhere for sophistication

It's a toaster I love to drive.

Owned one in the past and loved it. Not the most powerful engine for the vehicle weight, but it's peppy and reasonable on fuel. It's a down right ugly vehicle but it ticks all the boxes for my outdoor lifestyle...looks be damned. This toaster will serve me well for many years to come.

Best vehicle for the money I've ever had!

I can see why so many folks have had 3-4 Hondas. It's my first Honda and I love it. VERY reliable, good performance, good ride, and easy to maintain and I also get 36 mpg. on the highway with the A/C going.

Best car ever.

Super utilitarian but still very comfortable. Never heard of a more reliable car! It?s never given me an issue, even with 225K on it. If you?re looking for a vehicle with space, for camping, or just a fun driver, it?s a great choice. It?s a shame they discontinued them.

I would leave my family for this car

It?s fun, it?s reliable and it?s super spacious. I love how the seats fold up, gives some extra storage and my dog lays on her bed comfortably in the back.
