The 2004 Honda Element is a unique crossover SUV that debuted in 2003, aiming to blend the practicality of a pickup truck with the comfort of an SUV. Its boxy design, rear-hinged "suicide doors," and durable interior made it an instant hit. Key trims included the DX, LX, and EX. The original pricing ranged from around $16,000 to $20,000. Its versatile cargo space and easy-to-clean surfaces set it apart and continue to fuel its popularity.
The Good

The 2004 Honda Element offers a blend of practicality and quirky charm. Its advantages include Honda's renowned reliability, a comfortable ride, and a unique, functional design. The spacious interior and easy-to-clean surfaces appeal to practical buyers, while its distinctive style and adventurous spirit resonate emotionally.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2004 Honda Element include its boxy shape, which can create wind noise at highway speeds. Early models (including 2004) can have issues with the air conditioning compressor. Also, the rear-hinged doors, while unique, can be inconvenient in tight parking spaces. Watch for rust, especially in areas with road salt.

2004 Honda Element: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options: All 2004 Honda Elements came with a 2.4-liter i-VTEC inline-4 engine.

  • Horsepower: The engine produced 160 horsepower and 161 lb-ft of torque.

  • Fuel Economy: EPA estimates were around 21 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for the 2WD models, and slightly lower for the 4WD versions.

  • 0-60 Times: Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph was approximately 9.5 seconds.

  • Towing Capacity: The 2004 Element was not really designed for towing but with a towing package installed, it could tow up to 1,500 pounds.

  • Trim-Level Features:
    • DX: Included basic features like air conditioning, AM/FM radio, power windows, and manual transmission. It lacked some of the more desirable features of the higher trims.

    • LX: Added features like cruise control, improved audio system, and available all-wheel drive (Real Time 4WD). Upgraded fabric was also standard.

    • EX: The top-tier trim. Features included alloy wheels, a seven-speaker audio system with a subwoofer, side airbags, and stain-resistant fabric. It also had removable rear skylights and available navigation system on later models. The EX also came with a urethane-coated utility floor.

What Problems Does the 2004 Honda Element Have?

The 2004 Honda Element is generally considered a reliable vehicle, but some frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns exist. One common issue is premature wear of the air conditioning compressor. This can be expensive to repair. Rust can be a problem, especially in areas where salt is used on roads during winter. Check the undercarriage and around the wheel wells carefully. Some owners have reported issues with the ignition switch and occasional sensor failures.

Specifically regarding recalls, check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls related to the 2004 Element. Recalls can address safety-related defects that need to be fixed by the manufacturer free of charge. Long-term reliability generally remains strong due to Honda's engineering, but proper maintenance is crucial. Pay attention to fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) and address any unusual noises or vibrations promptly to prevent minor issues from escalating into major repairs.

How long will the 2004 Honda Element last?

A well-maintained 2004 Honda Element can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles with original engines and transmissions. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance. Regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles with synthetic oil), timely transmission fluid changes, and coolant flushes are critical.

Long-term durability weaknesses include potential rust issues, especially in colder climates, and eventual wear of suspension components like struts and bushings. Rubber components such as hoses and belts will also need replacement over time. Neglecting these issues will significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan.

Lots of room and very reliable. This car is great for commuting and handles extremely well in the snow. I would highly recommend this car to any one.

This car not only meets all my needs; city driving, camping, interstate driving, but the mileage can't be beaten for this type of vehicle. The back seats are easily taken out and stored when car camping/traveling. The interior mats are easily taken out and hosed off; the interior space is perfect! I wish Honda still made this vehicle. I have met numerous Honda Element owners, and ALL love this car and intend to have it drive until 400,000 - 500,000. And one person has 400,000+ mileage, —¹and it's still going.

The Honda Element is the most practical and versatile vehicle ever offered. It has the interior room of a van at half the length. Not an inch of space is wasted and there are multiple configurations that allow you to utilize the vehicle in varying capacities from day to day with just a couple of minor adjustments. Four can sit comfortably with a huge cargo area, or you can fold up or remove a seat or two and trade the extra passengers for even more cargo. You could fill it with cargo one way, unload all or some of the cargo, fold down the seats, and transport additional passengers on the way back. There are so many configurations, storage areas, and features it would be impossible to name them all here. The vehicle rides great and gets excellent traction when you need it with Honda's Real Time All Wheel Drive. It's also easy to maneuver through the city because it's so compact. It's a Honda so you know it's reliable. There's just so much this vehicle can do. Once you own one, you will never want another vehicle.

I've had a 2004 Honda Element for a few years, the thing is one of the most unreliable vehicles I've ever driven, its problem after problem after problem, first the brakes failed causing me to get into a fender bender, then the belt broke a few months later followed by the water pump, 3 time with the water pump failing, we think the head gasket blew but haven't gotten to check, its one of the slowest vehicles I've ever driven, and it guzzles gas more than a hummer does, but I will give it some props, for transporting materials its xxxx good, I worked on houses and its real good at handling the extra weight of tools, and materials like bricks and concrete, its not a looker, its quite ugly in my opinion but that's only an opinion, its acceleration is trash, it takes a bit to reach 60 mph, this car caused me to never want to buy a Honda again, there are way better choices than this, go for them

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Honda Element offered relatively basic tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio and a CD player. The LX trim added an improved audio system, while the EX trim featured a seven-speaker audio system with a subwoofer. A navigation system was offered as an option on later EX models, but not initially in 2004.

Driver-assistance features were limited. Cruise control was available on LX and EX trims. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking, which are common in modern vehicles.

Safety features included front airbags and optional side airbags on the EX trim. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard. Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally good for its class. Check the IIHS and NHTSA websites for specific crash-test ratings for the 2004 Honda Element. Keep in mind that safety standards have evolved significantly since 2004. It's important to consider this when comparing its safety to newer vehicles.

2004 Honda Element Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Honda Element ranged from approximately $16,000 for the base DX trim to around $20,000 for the EX trim. Currently, used market prices vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $4,000 to $10,000, or even higher for exceptionally well-maintained examples.

The Element has held its value relatively well due to its unique design, versatility, and Honda's reputation for reliability. Low mileage, excellent condition, and the EX trim level command higher resale values. The quirky styling has contributed to its desirability and cult following, further supporting resale prices. Rust-free examples are especially sought after.

2004 Honda Element Cost of Ownership

The 2004 Honda Element is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for its class, averaging around 23 mpg combined. Maintenance is relatively straightforward and affordable, thanks to Honda's reliable engineering and readily available parts. Repair costs can be higher if major components like the AC compressor or transmission fail, but routine maintenance is inexpensive. Long-term, a well-maintained Element is a cost-effective vehicle to own, especially compared to larger SUVs.

2004 Honda Element Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Honda Element is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Honda Element Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

Key rivals to the 2004 Honda Element included vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, and Nissan Xterra. Compared to the RAV4, the Element offered a more utilitarian interior and unique styling, while the RAV4 was generally seen as more refined. The Forester offered standard all-wheel drive and a slightly more car-like driving experience. The Xterra was more rugged and off-road oriented.

In terms of reliability, the Element is generally on par with the RAV4 and Forester, all known for their long-term dependability. The Xterra, while capable, doesn't have the same stellar reliability reputation. The Element's features were somewhat basic compared to some competitors, especially in the lower trims.

Considering alternatives, if you prioritize off-road capability, the Xterra might be a better choice. If you want a more refined and comfortable ride, the RAV4 or Forester are good options. However, if you value unique styling, a highly practical interior, and Honda's reliability, the Element remains a compelling choice. A newer Honda CR-V or Subaru Crosstrek offer similar versatility with improved fuel economy and modern features, but lack the Element's distinctive character.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Honda Element a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2004 Honda Element is ideal for those seeking a versatile and reliable vehicle with a distinctive style. It's particularly well-suited for outdoor enthusiasts, pet owners, and anyone who needs a practical and easy-to-clean interior.

Whether it's worth buying depends on its condition and price. A well-maintained, rust-free example is definitely worth considering, especially if you appreciate its unique features. The EX trim is generally more desirable due to its added features like alloy wheels and improved audio. Given its age, buying used is the only option. Have any potential purchase inspected by a trusted mechanic before committing.

I've had a 2004 Honda Element for a few years, the thing

I Love My Element

This car is economical to operate and maintain. It has exceptional capacity for carrying things, so much rear space. It rides well and handles well for being a box on wheels. The exterior style is unique and sporty. The engines are dependable and last forever if you change the oil and filters. If this one was crashed or stolen I would buy another. So versatile. Who needs to spend 60,000 on a car for around town. You can get one like this for 7,000.

One of the most reliable cars I have owned.

Love this vehicle! This Honda Element is fun to drive, has a huge back end for hauling stuff, camping, etc. This is one of the rare manual transmissions.....not for everyone but was perfect for my needs. Love it and I feel it will be a great auto for someone looking for this type of SUV.

Unbelievable! I just bought another one!

Reliable, reliable--keep on going. We drove our first one over 300,000, bought a second with 125,000 miles and its still going and just purchased a 2010 with 120,000. These cars cannot be beat

Best Utility Vehicle

Purchased used as a one owner vehicle with 222K miles. Well maintained even down to exterior paint luster. This is my "truck" as it is used to haul lumber (even 4'x8' plywood), bagged mulch, pine straw, furniture, you name it. Bonus...better has mileage than small pickups!

Element Has it All!

This Vehicle Does EVERYTHING!

The most versatile and reliable car we've owned.

The headline says it all. We've loved this car and wish that Honda would've continued it past the second version. Has lots of capability and options for cargo, passengers, and towing. When not commuting with it, we used it for towing, family trips, and all sorts of recreation (on-road and off-road).

This is a nice vehicle. Drives well.

This car meets my needs. It?s very comfortable and has lots of leg room. The seats fold up in the back so you can fit big things in there and move a lot of things. It?s a 5 speed and I love standards.
