2018 Dodge Journey Review: Reasonably Dependable Midsize SUV With Low Running Costs

Rating: 4.45
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2018 Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV, offering a blend of affordability and practicality. Produced from 2009 to 2020, the Journey aimed to provide family-friendly features at a competitive price point. Key trims in 2018 included the SE, SXT, Crossroad, and GT. Its appeal stemmed from its available third-row seating, making it a budget-friendly option for larger families. The pricing range typically started in the low $20,000s, although this varies based on condition and mileage now.
The Good

The 2018 Dodge Journey's primary advantage is its value. It offered affordable third-row seating, appealing to practical buyers needing space. While performance and efficiency aren't its strengths, the Journey provides comfortable seating and a familiar, user-friendly design. Emotionally, it offers a sense of security and capability for family adventures, despite some reliability concerns.

The Bad

The 2018 Dodge Journey suffers from below-average fuel economy and relatively lackluster performance, especially with the base engine. Reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting issues with the transmission and electrical systems. The interior materials and design are also dated compared to newer competitors, and crash test scores are not impressive.

What Problems Does the 2018 Dodge Journey Have?

The 2018 Dodge Journey, like other model years of the same generation, has faced its share of reported problems and reliability concerns. Some frequently reported issues include problems with the transmission, particularly rough shifting or complete failure. Electrical problems, such as issues with the infotainment system, power windows, and door locks, have also been noted.

Several recalls have affected Dodge Journeys in general, although not necessarily specific to the 2018 model year alone. These recalls have addressed concerns like faulty wiring harnesses that could lead to engine stalling, and issues with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing.

Long-term reliability can be a concern. Issues related to oil leaks, especially in higher-mileage examples, are not uncommon. The 2.4L engine, while more fuel-efficient than the V6, is often considered underpowered and can suffer from premature wear. The overall build quality and materials used in the interior also contribute to concerns about long-term durability.

How long will the 2018 Dodge Journey last?

With regular maintenance, a 2018 Dodge Journey can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles, translating to roughly 10-13 years of service. However, achieving this depends heavily on consistent oil changes, timely repairs, and addressing issues promptly. Key weaknesses impacting long-term durability include potential transmission problems, especially if not properly maintained. Rust can also become an issue in regions with harsh winters. The interior plastics are prone to wear and tear, affecting the overall appearance over time.

Had a 2015 and found it super comfortable on long distance trips. No brainer to do a repeat with a newer model. Car was clean, excellent care, perfect exterior.

Would give this car 25 stars if I could. The value fir money is unlike any car I have ever purchased I got the GT trim package... it's like luxury it feels like JEEP Overland in feel for 50% less in cost.
Veleka
This car has given me extreme joy. I have no complaints. It is very reliable and spacious. I am a grandmother raising 3 grandchildren and this Dodge Journey is exactly what I needed for my growing bunch.
Negative Owner Reviews
Bradley
My vehicle has just under 50,000 miles (not hard miles) on it. In March of this year the transmission started to slip. I took it to the same dealership I bought it from. $1000 later they said that there were no noticable issues and no metal shavings when they changed the transmission filter and pan. Fast forward to now, I just finished a drive from Kansas to Mississippi and the transmission has blown. The place it is at right now says that there was no fluid and that the transmission pump is gone. I stated that it was not leaking and they said that is was blown from the top side of the transmission and that it was leaking ONLY when driving. I did not see any leaks or drips on the ground where I parked lately either. They said that this has been a long known Dodge transmission issue. Now I have to decide whether to put in a rebuilt transmission or new. I owe $3000 still on this thing.

To early to tell. So for everything is ok. Only driven 900 miles, but so for everything seems to be working ok. I will say it is a nice looking suv.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Dodge Journey's tech features are relatively basic compared to newer vehicles. The base model features a 4.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, while higher trims offer an 8.4-inch touchscreen with available navigation. Entertainment features include a six-speaker audio system in lower trims and a premium audio system in higher trims. Bluetooth connectivity is standard on most models.

Driver-assistance features are limited. A rearview camera is standard, but advanced features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking are not available.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, electronic stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional safety features included integrated child booster seats.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) are mixed. The 2018 Journey received an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings are also not particularly impressive, with marginal scores in some crash tests. Always check the latest safety ratings from both NHTSA and IIHS before making a purchase.

2018 Dodge Journey Prices and Market Value

The 2018 Dodge Journey had a starting MSRP in the low $20,000s when new. Current used market prices generally range from around $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Journey depreciates relatively quickly compared to some of its rivals, primarily due to its age, dated design, and concerns about reliability. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable features like the V6 engine and third-row seating.

2018 Dodge Journey Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Dodge Journey is moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel costs are higher than average due to its below-average fuel economy. Maintenance can be relatively affordable, but potential repairs, especially related to the transmission and electrical systems, can significantly increase ownership costs. Overall, while the initial purchase price is attractive, the long-term ownership costs should be carefully considered.

2018 Dodge Journey Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Dodge Journey is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Dodge Journey Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2018 Dodge Journey competes with vehicles like the Kia Sorento, Toyota RAV4 (though smaller), and Chevrolet Equinox. Compared to these rivals, the Journey generally lags in performance, fuel efficiency, and reliability. The Sorento offers a more refined interior and better driving experience. The RAV4 boasts superior fuel economy and a strong reputation for reliability. The Equinox provides a more modern design and updated technology.

However, the Journey's primary advantage is its lower price point, particularly when considering models with third-row seating. If budget is a major concern and third-row seating is a necessity, it can be a viable option.

Alternatives that offer a better overall package include the Kia Sorento (if budget allows for the upgrade). The Mazda CX-5 or Honda CR-V provide a better blend of fuel efficiency, reliability, and driving enjoyment, although they lack third-row seating. For similar price point and third-row seating, consider carefully researching reliability ratings and maintenance costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Dodge Journey a Good Wagon?

The 2018 Dodge Journey is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who need occasional third-row seating and are willing to accept compromises in performance, fuel economy, and reliability. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual priorities and budget. It's generally advisable to purchase a used model, as new models are no longer available. Opting for a V6-equipped trim can improve the driving experience. A thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic is essential before purchasing, and careful attention to maintenance is crucial for long-term ownership.

My vehicle has just under 50,000 miles (not hard miles)

2018 dodge journey no start.

My vehicle has been pretty good up until two weeks ago , September 9, 2022. I experienced a no start situation with the vehicle towed to the dealership and the dealership has no idea what's happening or watt they report bad battery no charge etc. I'm suspecting that the PCM has a bad chip due to a recall that was performed supposedly in 2018. I don't believe my vehicle was recalled and have not received a recall notice from Chrysler Corp. so now I've got a dead vehicle in the shop the dealership has no concept of what's happening and the service writer seems to be not knowledgeable enough to research the problem.

Little Flaws

Love my Journey but have notice several with a missing antenna and also several with foggy headlights. Like moisture buildup inside the headlight assemblies. Bluetooth doesn't always hook up. Not the easiest on gas.

Journey needs help

Motor lacks pick up/passing power. Acceleration is slow at best! As for reliability, the passenger's light does not work right, there is a slight sputter and a slight rattle in the front end!

Best for 3 Grandchildren with Booster seats

It has adequate room for 3 booster seats and great for getting groceries in and out .No need to bend over the lip to lift items in or out ! Drawbacks , no grab handles for driver or passenger , running boards would be great to have an automatic opening and closing for the rear hatch!
