2016 Dodge Journey Review: Budget Friendly Midsize SUV With Fuel Injector Problems

Rating: 4.44
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV offering practicality and affordability. Launched in 2009, it continued with only minor updates for several years. Key trims include the SE, SXT, Crossroad, and R/T. Its popularity stemmed from its budget-friendly price, available third-row seating, and family-oriented features. Pricing typically ranged from the low $20,000s to the mid $30,000s when new. Its crossover styling also added to its appeal.
The Good

The 2016 Dodge Journey's key advantages include its affordability, appealing to practical buyers. Available third-row seating and ample cargo space enhance its practicality. The design is somewhat dated but inoffensive. For emotional buyers, the Journey offers a sense of family-friendliness and the ability to transport a large group.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2016 Dodge Journey include its outdated design, subpar fuel economy, and less-than-stellar performance from the base engine. Reliability can be a concern, so inspect thoroughly for any electrical issues, transmission problems, and suspension wear. The interior materials also feel cheap.

What Problems Does the 2016 Dodge Journey Have?

The 2016 Dodge Journey has several frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns. Common issues include electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors, and issues with the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module). Transmission problems, including rough shifting or complete failure, have also been reported. Suspension components, particularly the struts and shocks, may wear out prematurely.

Recalls for the 2016 model year have addressed issues such as potential engine stalling due to crankshaft or camshaft sensor issues. Some models have also been recalled for issues related to the fuel pump relay.

Long-term reliability concerns center around the overall build quality and the durability of certain components. Owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, and the interior trim pieces are prone to wear and tear. Overall, due diligence is necessary when considering a used 2016 Dodge Journey, including a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic.

How long will the 2016 Dodge Journey last?

With average maintenance, a 2016 Dodge Journey can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. However, long-term durability is a concern. Weaknesses include the aforementioned electrical issues, transmission problems, and suspension wear. Regular oil changes, timely transmission fluid replacement, and addressing issues promptly can help extend the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan and increase the likelihood of major repairs.

I love our Journey! Just purchased it with low mileage. The R/T sure does make me love it more! Very comfy leather seats and a great entertainment system. My only complaint is the gas mileage. Seriously! I owned a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan and it had way better mileage! That being said the Journey is still the best vehicle I've ever owned.

TeeTee
It's has nothing of what I wanted in a vehicle. I was forced to purchase it. I do not like not one thing about it.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Dodge Journey's tech and safety features are relatively basic. Standard tech includes keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, and a 4.3-inch touchscreen (upgraded to an 8.4-inch touchscreen on higher trims). Entertainment features include a six-speaker audio system, with optional upgrades to a premium sound system.

Driver-assistance features are limited, with available rear parking sensors and a rearview camera. Safety features include standard stability control, antilock brakes, and multiple airbags.

Optional features include a sunroof, heated front seats, and a navigation system.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are mixed. The Journey received marginal scores in some crash tests, which is a point of concern. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2016 Journey an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

2016 Dodge Journey Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Dodge Journey's MSRP ranged from approximately $21,000 to $33,000, depending on the trim and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $16,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Journey depreciates relatively quickly due to its age, reliability concerns, and outdated design. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, accident history, and the presence of desirable options like the V6 engine and third-row seating.

2016 Dodge Journey Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Dodge Journey is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel economy is subpar, especially with the V6 engine, increasing fuel expenses. Maintenance costs are average, but potential repairs due to reliability issues can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Parts are generally affordable, but labor can add up if complex repairs are needed. Overall, it's not the most economical choice due to its fuel consumption and potential repair bills.

2016 Dodge Journey Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Dodge Journey is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Dodge Journey Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Dodge Journey competes with vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Kia Sorento. In terms of performance and features, the Journey lags behind most rivals. The RAV4, CR-V, and CX-5 offer better fuel economy, more advanced technology, and superior driving dynamics. The Kia Sorento provides a more refined interior and better reliability.

The Journey's main advantage is its lower price point. However, the improved reliability and resale value of the competitors often make them a better long-term investment.

Alternatives to the Journey include the Kia Sorento, which offers a similar size and available third-row seating with better reliability. The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are more reliable and fuel-efficient choices, though they may not offer a third row. For a sportier driving experience, the Mazda CX-5 is also a good option.

1853 2016 Dodge Journey (5.0★)

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Dodge Journey a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Dodge Journey is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who need an affordable crossover with available third-row seating and are willing to accept its shortcomings. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. It's generally best considered as a used vehicle due to its depreciation. Look for models with the V6 engine for better performance. A thorough inspection is crucial to identify potential problems. If reliability and advanced features are priorities, consider alternatives like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4, even if they cost more upfront.

Please be mindful

I purchased a 2016 Dodge Journey October of 2022 with 70k on it. I had a Kia Sorento previously that got up to 360k and was starting to go down and with 4 little ones, we needed a new car. It was great for a few months and now everything is going down at once. I was driving home with one of my kids and suddenly my steering wheel locked, it went into power-save mode and started overheating. A nice man who happened to be a mechanic stopped to take a look as we were in the middle of the road, told me that my serpentine belt broke and found that my car had been leaking oil on the inside which was getting on the belt. Replaced the belt and took it to my mechanic and was told that I needed another coolant housing unit which cost me $900. Then it was fine, but started leaking again 2 weeks later and the battery light started to come on sporadically. Went back to my mechanic. Now they find that I need a new VVT Solenoid and an engine oil gasket cover which is going to cost another $1200, but battery and alternator checked out. I got the car towed home as I was afraid to drive and now it's only operating in battery-save mode which is weird as the battery and alternator have been tested multiple times. It's just been sitting in our driveway as I don't know what to do with it. Now we're back looking for another car. P.S. Whoever designed the placement of the battery does not need to have their position anymore.

Don't buy a 2016 Dodge Journey!

Bought my 2016 Dodge Journey back in April 2022 with 84,000 miles on it. Thought it was a great vehicle, comfortable, roomy, good performance with the V-6. within 3 months the electrical outlets under the dash as well as by the back tailgate quit working. Then the passenger side back door lock quit working. then 2 weeks ago while out on an animal rescue call, I parked it, shut it off & 30 minutes later it would not start. Managed to jump start it after having jumper cables on it for 30 minutes. Got it home, which wasn't too far away, shut it off & that was the end of driving my Journey. It had 87,000 miles on it at that point. Had it towed to my mechanics shop where they went thru every thing, the battery was fine, less than a year old. Was told the starter was bad as well as it had a cracked motor mount. Had all of that work done as well as an oil change while it was there. After being in the shop for almost a week I picked it up at a cost of $1000. Did some driving around the following day than it sat in my driveway for 2 days. The next day it started up fine, went out to vote, it started up fine again, then ran to Walmart to stock up on animal supplies before the Tropical Storm Nicole. Loaded up the Journey with supplies, went to start it & nothing. Every warning light was flashing on & off as well as a message saying the vehicle was not in park. AAA came out, could not start it so off it went on a tow truck back to the shop where it's now been for over a week. Diagnostics are showing every error code known to Dodge vehicles. The entire fuse box has been replaced, the battery & starter gone thru again, the wiring gone thru & no matter what they try the Journey will not start, no turnover, nothing. If they can't figure it out by this Monday I will have it towed to my local Dodge dealer & see if they can figure it out. By the way this shop specializes in custom trucks & SUVs, have an amazing reputation & are well known for the work they do yet they can't figure out why it will not start, turnover or even click. This is the first Dodge I've ever owned & will be the last one. Should've bought a Ford Explorer like I was going to do. Luckily I didn't sell my 1997 4 cylinder Ford Escort with over 250,000 miles on it when I bought the Journey. I'm back driving that now.

Extra reliable & roomy.

I've owned the 2016 Dodge Journey SXT 3.6L V6 AWD SUV, since April 2017. Purchased with approximately 10k miles, this vehicle has been nothing but a pleasure to drive & own. I've had zero mechanical issues beyond regular maintenance (new tires, oil changes/scheduled manufacturer service, basic upkeep). I worked between Charlotte & NYC for more than 4 years, driving each way every 6-8 weeks and the car has had no problems at all. Super reliable with extra seating & massive cargo space. I now have 74k miles & still no major issues.

AMAZINGLY STUPID Battery Location

The person that designed the battery compartment and those that approved it should be fired! Having to jack up your car, remove the tire, unattach the wheel well, peel back cover, reach in and remove battery cable with a small ratchet set, a big one will not work, remove the battery from a tiny space and I have small hands, turn the battery over so that I can slide it out, then slide the replacement battery in, try to reattach the battery cables, there is also a battery lock down bar, I left it off because of aggravation, close the cover, remount the tire, let down the jack and that's it, 2 hours plus. Amazingly Stupid!!!

Has been very reliable for me!

At 65,000 miles, our Journey has been excellent. The 3.6L V6 with the 6-speed have been nothing but great. I also really love the styling, especially with the black top package. The ride quality is great too. My only complaint is the infotainment system. It's a little outdated and the Bluetooth connectivity is problematic. So basically, my opinion is in complete disagreement with cars.com. haha! I would definitely but a Journey again.
