The 2009 Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV introduced as a versatile family vehicle. It was offered in various trims, including SE, SXT, and R/T. The Journey was known for its available third-row seating, providing seating for up to seven passengers. The original pricing ranged from around $20,000 to $28,000. Its affordability and practicality made it a popular choice for families needing extra space. The Journey's unique selling point was its blend of car-like handling with SUV versatility.
The Good

What Problems Does the 2009 Dodge Journey Have?

The 2009 Dodge Journey had several frequently reported problems and reliability concerns. One of the most common issues was related to the electrical system, with reports of malfunctioning sensors, faulty wiring, and issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). Transmission problems were also a significant concern, with some owners experiencing rough shifting or complete transmission failure.
Another issue was related to the brakes, with some reporting premature wear and tear. The air conditioning system was also prone to failures. Recalls for the 2009 Dodge Journey included issues related to the fuel system and airbags.
Long-term reliability concerns included potential rust issues, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Owners reported problems with the suspension components, such as worn-out struts and ball joints. The interior materials were not very durable, leading to wear and tear over time. Given these issues, a thorough inspection and a detailed vehicle history report are highly recommended before purchasing a used 2009 Dodge Journey. Checking for any outstanding recalls is also crucial.

How long will the 2009 Dodge Journey last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Dodge Journey could potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, given the reported reliability issues, reaching those milestones largely depended on diligent maintenance and addressing problems promptly. Poor maintenance habits could significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability weaknesses often manifested in the form of electrical problems, transmission issues, and rust. Suspension components were also susceptible to wear and tear. Regular oil changes, timely transmission servicing, and rust prevention measures were crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Owners should also be prepared to address potential electrical and sensor issues as they arise.

First let me say I've been a Mopar Man for most of my 55 years. This vehicle was a bad purchase though. I guess you get a lemon every once in a while. The vehicle is very noise when you step on the gas. For all of the noise that you hear, one would think that you were speeding. That is not the case with this vehicle. The 2.4 liter engine is severely under powered, and, like I said, very noisy. The seats are very unaccommodating. My wife and I will not drive more than 3 hours in it. Our backs hurt when we exit the vehicle. The styling is okay but is in need of a serious updating. Since owning this vehicle, we have had three major recalls to date. All three have had to do with safety equipment on the car. Overall, it has been a very bad investment. I would not recommend this vehicle.
Dan
I purchased my Journey about a year and a half ago. It started out great until a few months after purchase, and it was in the shop, the power steering went. Since said incident it has been back in the shop two more times for the power steering and several times for minor problems (i.e, dash lifted, power windows stopped working, and also the keyless and auto start doesn't work.) Also, apparently the service decided it inform me that maybe if I purchase different power steering fluid it would stop popping the hose. "Well guess what if Dodge doesn't want to do anything about the unreliability of there vehicle, why should i spend 60 dollars on the fluid." All in all i would not recomend this vehicle, correction i wouldn't recommend a Dodge to anyone.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Dodge Journey's built-in tech and entertainment features were fairly basic for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered features like a six-disc CD changer, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a premium sound system. An optional rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player was available, appealing to families with children.
Driver-assistance features were limited, with standard features like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control. More advanced driver-assistance technologies were not available on this model.
Safety features included standard front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for all three rows. The 2009 Dodge Journey received mixed crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. While it performed reasonably well in some crash tests, it received lower scores in others. Specifically, the NHTSA gave it 4 out of 5 stars for frontal crash protection and 5 out of 5 stars for side crash protection. The IIHS rated it 'Good' in moderate overlap front tests, but 'Marginal' in side impact tests.
Optional features included a navigation system, but it was considered outdated compared to modern systems. Overall, the 2009 Dodge Journey focused more on practicality and affordability than advanced technology or safety features.

2009 Dodge Journey Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Dodge Journey had an MSRP ranging from approximately $20,000 to $28,000, depending on the trim and options. As of today, used market prices for a 2009 Dodge Journey typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Journey has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, reliability concerns, and the availability of newer, more efficient crossover SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options like the third-row seat or rear-seat entertainment system. Models with a clean title and documented service history command higher prices.

2009 Dodge Journey Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Dodge Journey is generally not considered economical to own. Insurance costs are average for its class, but fuel economy is below average, especially with the V6 engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential reliability issues. Common repairs like transmission problems and electrical issues can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs can add up, making it a potentially costly vehicle to maintain. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential when considering a used 2009 Dodge Journey.

2009 Dodge Journey Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Dodge Journey is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a RHD B-49 with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Dodge Journey Compare to Other RHD B-49?

The 2009 Dodge Journey competed with vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Chevrolet Equinox. In terms of performance, the Journey's engine options were adequate but not class-leading. The RAV4 and CR-V offered better fuel economy and similar or better performance. Feature-wise, the Journey provided a comparable level of equipment, especially with the available third-row seating, which was a unique selling point. However, in reliability, the Journey lagged behind the RAV4 and CR-V, which had better reputations for long-term dependability. The Equinox offered a more refined interior and better fuel economy, making it a stronger competitor. Price-wise, the Journey was often more affordable than its rivals, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, considering the long-term reliability and potential repair costs, alternatives like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V are recommended for those prioritizing dependability. If the third-row seating is a must-have, the Kia Sorento (of similar vintage) might be a better alternative, offering more features and potentially better reliability. For a similar price, a slightly older but well-maintained RAV4 or CR-V could offer a more reliable and satisfying ownership experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Dodge Journey a Good RHD B-49?

The 2009 Dodge Journey is best suited for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing affordability and space over long-term reliability. It can be a viable option if purchased at a very low price and with a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Given its age and potential issues, buying one new is not an option. Specific trims like the SXT or R/T offer more features but don't necessarily improve reliability. It's crucial to check for any outstanding recalls and be prepared for potential maintenance and repair costs. Alternatives like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V offer better reliability and are generally a safer bet, even if they cost a bit more upfront. Only consider the Journey if the price is significantly lower than its competitors and you understand the risks involved.

Not worth all the headaches

I have owned this car for 19 months and it's nothing but headaches! It IS great when it's running properly BUT it has issues starting. (Starter has been replaced) I am on my THIRD battery. It has a major battery draw, so guess have to be pulled if it's going to sit for more than 4 hours. I only have 145k on it and I have had to do a LOT of front end work and replace the inner transmission bearings and seal. I wish I would have NEVER bought a Journey.
