The 2014 Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV, offering a blend of affordability and practicality. Produced from 2009 to 2020, the Journey provided a budget-friendly alternative in a competitive segment. Key trims included the SE, SXT, Crossroad, and R/T. New, its pricing ranged approximately from $20,000 to $30,000. It stood out for offering optional third-row seating at a lower price point than many rivals, making it popular with budget-conscious families needing extra passenger space.
The Good

The 2014 Dodge Journey's key advantage is its value; it offers a lot of space and features for the money. Practical buyers appreciate the optional third-row seating and available all-wheel drive. Emotionally, its rugged design and available V6 engine can appeal to drivers wanting a capable and family-friendly SUV. Comfort is decent, especially on longer trips.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2014 Dodge Journey include its below-average fuel economy, especially with the V6 engine. The base engine is considered underpowered for the vehicle's size. The interior materials and overall fit and finish are not as refined as some competitors. Be sure to check for transmission issues, a common complaint.

What Problems Does the 2014 Dodge Journey Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Dodge Journey include issues with the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), which can cause stalling, difficulty starting, and electrical malfunctions. Transmission problems, such as rough shifting and slipping, have also been reported, particularly in models with higher mileage. Some owners have experienced issues with the air conditioning system, including compressor failure. Premature brake wear is another common complaint. Recalls for the 2014 Dodge Journey have addressed issues such as malfunctioning airbags and problems with the anti-lock braking system. Long-term reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting various electrical and mechanical problems as the vehicle ages. It's crucial to thoroughly inspect the vehicle and review its maintenance history before purchasing a used 2014 Journey, paying close attention to any warning lights or unusual noises. Check for proper functionality of all electrical components and ensure the transmission shifts smoothly during a test drive. Researching the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls is also highly recommended.

How long will the 2014 Dodge Journey last?

Based on owner data and typical maintenance habits, a 2014 Dodge Journey can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years with proper care. However, long-term durability can be a concern. The transmission and electrical systems are known weaknesses. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, is crucial to maximizing its lifespan. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more costly repairs. Rust can also be a problem in regions with harsh winters, so rustproofing is advisable.
Positive Owner Reviews
Pam
Bought new 2014 and have lifetime warranty that only costs me $100.00 to fix it. I have already paid for the warranty and more. Knock on wood. Only 80,000 miles on it and looks great!
Kristy
Nice luxurious vehicle. Still getting used to it but so far so good. Can't wait to figure it out and use it to its fullest.
Mabrowngetsmail
The more I have driven this car the more I have come to love it. It's great on gas, roomy, powerful and can go just about anywhere as I have been off road driving as well
Negative Owner Reviews
Manleya
Not enough horsepower to get the vehicle really going. Would probably like it more if I could get a higher package on the vehicle.
wish I hadn't
I bought this car with 200 miles on it in august of 2014. At 7000 miles the front end started popping. At 21000 miles I had to get the car realigned but the dealership still couldn't pinpoint where the noise was coming from. Now at 36000 miles I just got it out of the shop for the second time this month. On the first visit I had to put 4 new tires, another alignment, new front struts and strut mounts. This time they replaced the sway bar links and sway bar bushings and there is still a lot of noise coming from the front end. It sounds like im driving around a 10 yearold car. I will never buy another dodge!
Frustrated with journey
Bought the 2014 Dodge Journey brand new and now only have 6,000 miles on it after 8 months. Check engine light has come on 3 times and now the screen goes out sporadically when applying brakes. Two visits to the service department for this latest issue and they think it's the screen so will need to schedule a third visit. Plan on going back to ford and regret this purchase.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Dodge Journey's built-in tech and entertainment features are relatively basic compared to newer vehicles. Standard features include a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, a six-speaker audio system, and dual-zone climate control. Optional features included an 8.4-inch touchscreen display with Uconnect infotainment system, navigation, a premium audio system, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player. Driver-assistance features were limited, with available options such as rear parking sensors and a rearview camera.

Safety features included standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2014 Dodge Journey an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it mixed ratings, with good scores in some crash tests but marginal scores in others. Overall, the Journey's tech and safety features were adequate for its time but lag behind modern standards. Checking the specific equipment on the vehicle you're considering is vital, as the level of technology could vary significantly based on the original trim level and options selected. Consider a thorough inspection of all technology before purchasing.

2014 Dodge Journey Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Dodge Journey ranged from around $20,000 for the base SE model to approximately $30,000 for a fully-equipped R/T. Current used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Journey depreciates relatively quickly due to its age, reliability concerns, and advancements in the crossover SUV market. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and geographical location. Models with the V6 engine and all-wheel drive tend to hold their value slightly better.

2014 Dodge Journey Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Dodge Journey is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel economy, particularly with the V6, is below average, leading to higher fuel expenses. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential reliability issues. While basic maintenance is affordable, unexpected repairs related to the transmission or electrical system can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Thorough research and budgeting are recommended.

How Does the 2014 Dodge Journey Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Dodge Journey competes with models like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Chevrolet Equinox. In terms of performance, the RAV4 and CR-V offer better fuel economy and more refined driving experiences. The Equinox can match the Journey's value proposition, but also suffers from similar reliability woes. Feature-wise, the Journey lags behind these rivals, especially in technology and driver-assistance systems. Reliability is a major area where the Journey falls short compared to the Toyota and Honda. Price is the Journey's main advantage, typically costing less than these competitors on the used market.

Better alternatives include the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5, which offer superior reliability, fuel economy, and overall refinement. The Kia Sorento is a similar alternative that offers optional third-row seating and a longer warranty, potentially making it a more appealing choice if budget is a primary concern and you need that extra row. Consider these alternatives for improved long-term ownership experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Dodge Journey a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Dodge Journey is ideal for budget-conscious buyers needing a relatively inexpensive crossover with optional third-row seating. It can be worth buying used if purchased at a low price and thoroughly inspected for potential issues. Opting for the V6 engine can improve the driving experience, but be aware of the lower fuel economy. Given its age and potential reliability concerns, a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. Alternatives with better reliability and fuel economy should be considered if your budget allows. This is very much a budget option, not a top-tier choice.

Beware of the head gasket!!!

We bought our 2014 Journey used in 2016 and had it for nine years. The driveability is great, very comfortable. The ergonomics of the seats and the interior are really nice. Roomy rear cargo with fold down seats was useful. It has decent power and overall we were happy with it...until....We had the dreaded head gasket leak and are told by the dealership that this tends to happen on these cars at age 9 or so. Now we are told that it would cost over 2K to fix it and it would likely have a crack in the engine which would require another 9K to replace the motor. For this reason Journey.... Yer fired!

Love my 2014 Journey Limited

I brought my 2014 Dodge Journey limited 2 years ago, absolutely love it. I take it in for regular maintenance and everything runs great. It is speedy and feels like you are floating down the interstate. Love the 2 row seating, the back row that folds down and the HUGE trunk area. There is also soo much storage in this thing. Only issues I have had with it is my rear tow just went out and I have a small exhaust leak. But I will not trade this thing in until she dies. This is the best car I have owned. Heated steering wheel and seats, outlets in back, power seats, rearview backup camera and the sunroof are all awesome. For the price you pay you really get more than what you think. Put new tires, rims, brakes and rotors and now it looks even better. So happy with it

2014 Dodge Journey 2.4

I'm mostly a Honda guy, but went for this because it had a nice price point and CRVs of 2014 are not my favorite. The interior has some tight squeezes here and there (and then huge space in places you don't care to have it), with shotgun being a little hard on the legs for anyone taller. This is all made up for by the trunk, which is huge. However, the drive is amazing. For the size of the vehicle, it has a turning radius like a small sedan or better. I wish I'd gone with the bigger engine for towing, but we picked this vehicle size for ease of loading two small kids and of all makes, the Dodge was definitely the best.

Nicest and Newest Car I have owned yet.

I feel comfortable and safe in my Dodge Journey. It is quiet on the inside and the stereo sounds great. This model has heated seats, and heated steering wheel. It is the newest and nicest car I have owned. Lowest miles too for the year. I look forward to a few road trips in this comfortable driver.
