The 2011 Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV that entered its first generation in 2009. Offering a blend of affordability and practicality, it aimed to be a budget-friendly family hauler. Key trims included SE, SXT, Crew, and R/T. New, the Journey ranged from around $20,000 to $30,000. Its available third-row seating and ample cargo space made it popular for families needing extra room without the bulk of a full-size SUV.
The Good

The 2011 Dodge Journey offered value for practical buyers seeking an affordable family vehicle. The spacious interior and optional third-row seating were appealing. Performance was adequate for daily driving, and the comfortable ride provided a decent experience. Aesthetically, its rugged design gave it a more SUV-like appearance than some competitors.

The Bad

The 2011 Dodge Journey's weaknesses included its below-average fuel economy, especially with the V6 engine. Some owners reported issues with the transmission and electrical systems. Interior materials were often criticized for feeling cheap. The base engine lacked sufficient power for a fully loaded vehicle.

What Problems Does the 2011 Dodge Journey Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2011 Dodge Journey include issues with the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), which can cause various electrical problems, such as stalling, fuel pump failure, and difficulty starting. Transmission issues, including rough shifting and premature failure, have also been reported, particularly with the 4-speed automatic transmission paired with the 2.4L engine. Other reported issues include premature brake wear, water leaks (especially around the sunroof, if equipped), and problems with the air conditioning system.

Recalls for the 2011 Dodge Journey included issues related to airbag deployment and potential brake failure. Owners should check the NHTSA website for specific recall information related to their VIN. Long-term reliability concerns center around the potential for electrical problems and transmission issues as the vehicle ages. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes, is crucial to mitigating some of these risks.

While not specific to the 2011 model year alone, Journeys across several model years have faced similar complaints, indicating potential design or manufacturing flaws that persisted throughout its production run. Before purchasing a used 2011 Journey, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2011 Dodge Journey last?

With proper maintenance, a 2011 Dodge Journey can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. However, long-term durability is a concern due to reported electrical issues and transmission problems. Consistent oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing minor issues promptly can extend its lifespan. Neglecting maintenance can lead to accelerated wear and costly repairs. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters, so regular washing and waxing are recommended. Overall, the Journey's longevity depends heavily on diligent upkeep.

Negative Owner Reviews
MGTF2013
This was a basic vehicle w/4 cylinder automatic. We traveled with this vehicle and found it a little under powered for long hauls & received below expected fuel mileage, felt it needed a 6 cylinder to be a good traveler, and got poor mileage out of the OEM tires.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Dodge Journey featured a standard four-speaker audio system, dual-zone climate control, and basic instrumentation. Higher trims offered more advanced tech and entertainment features.

Entertainment: Options included a six-speaker audio system, a premium sound system with a subwoofer, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a screen and DVD player. A touchscreen infotainment system with navigation was also available on higher trims.

Driver-Assistance: Driver-assistance features were limited. A rearview camera was available on some trims. Standard features included electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes.

Safety Features: Standard safety features included front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for all three rows of seating. Optional features included integrated child booster seats.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2011 Dodge Journey received mixed crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Some tests showed good performance, while others revealed weaknesses in structural integrity. It's essential to consult both NHTSA and IIHS websites for specific ratings before purchasing.

Compared to newer vehicles, the 2011 Journey lacked many modern driver-assistance technologies like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Its tech and safety features were adequate for its time but are dated by today's standards.

2011 Dodge Journey Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Dodge Journey ranged from approximately $20,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Journey has depreciated significantly due to its age, reported reliability issues, and competition from newer, more technologically advanced SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and the presence of desirable features like the V6 engine and third-row seating.

2011 Dodge Journey Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Dodge Journey can be moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. However, fuel economy, especially with the V6, is below average, increasing running costs. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential electrical and transmission issues. While initially affordable, long-term ownership costs can add up, making it less economical than some competitors. Budgeting for potential repairs is crucial.

2011 Dodge Journey Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Dodge Journey is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan E-49 with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Dodge Journey Compare to Other Sedan E-49?

Compared to rivals like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Chevrolet Equinox, the 2011 Dodge Journey generally lags in reliability and fuel efficiency. The RAV4 and CR-V are known for their longevity and strong resale value. The Equinox offered similar interior space but often had better fuel economy than the V6 Journey. In terms of features, the Journey could compete on price, offering more equipment for the money, but its technology was often less refined.

Performance-wise, the Journey's base engine was underpowered compared to competitors' offerings. While the V6 provided adequate power, its fuel economy suffered. Reliability was a significant concern, with the Journey consistently ranking lower than its Japanese rivals in owner satisfaction surveys.

Similar alternatives to consider include the Kia Sorento, which often offered better value and a longer warranty. Better alternatives would be the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V for their superior reliability and resale value, albeit at a higher initial cost. If budget is the primary concern, carefully consider the potential long-term costs of owning a 2011 Journey versus a more reliable, albeit more expensive, competitor.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Dodge Journey a Good Sedan E-49?

The 2011 Dodge Journey is best suited for budget-conscious buyers needing a spacious family vehicle with optional third-row seating. It's worth buying *only* if found at a significantly low price, thoroughly inspected, and well-maintained. A V6-powered model is preferable for better performance. Consider it only for short-term use, as long-term reliability is questionable. Thoroughly research potential problems and budget for repairs. Alternatives like a used Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V are generally better choices for long-term reliability, even at a higher upfront cost. Proceed with caution.

Having lots of wiring issues.

We bought this car at 23,000 miles and still have it and it's at 170,000 but the past year we have had lots of wiring issues, the locks don't work anymore the tire sensors are off, the radio goes black every once in while. That's what the codes are anyways for the check engine. And we had transmission problems thats was covered by dodge. So sadly to say we will never get a Journey every again. Prolly not even dodge.

Good vehicle for the price

The vehicle has performed fantastic since our purchase. The price for this vehicle is was well below the price of a new car and in comparison it is nearly brand new. My only complaints are that it did not come with a license plate frame for the front of the vehicle which is illegal in the state that I live in. This should have been provided by the dealer. Also the radio jumps up to high volume when the car is first started even after turning off the accelerator controlled volume function. Pain in the arse cause it scares our little one every time we start the car. Other than that this car appears to be a good buy on our part.
