Rating: 4.60
Based on 60 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2005 Honda Element is a unique crossover SUV known for its boxy design and utilitarian focus. Introduced in 2003 and produced through 2011, the Element quickly gained popularity for its versatility. Key trims included the base DX, LX, and EX. Pricing for a used 2005 model typically ranges from $5,000 to $12,000 depending on condition and mileage. Its standout features are its easy-to-clean interior, configurable seating, and available Real Time 4WD, making it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2005 Honda Element offers a blend of practicality and fun. Its reliable Honda engine provides adequate performance, while its spacious and configurable interior offers comfort and utility. The Element's unique design appeals to those seeking something different, and its relatively good fuel efficiency adds to its overall value. Emotionally, it's a vehicle for adventure; practically, it's a versatile hauler.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2005 Honda Element include wind noise due to its boxy shape and limited sound insulation. The rear clamshell doors can be inconvenient in tight parking spaces. Rust can be an issue in northern climates, so check the undercarriage. The rear skylight (if equipped) can leak. The plastic body panels can fade and become brittle with age.

2005 Honda Element: Quick Overview

Key specs for the 2005 Honda Element:

  • Engine Options: 2.4L DOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder
  • Horsepower: 160 hp @ 5500 rpm
  • Fuel Economy: Approximately 20 mpg city / 24 mpg highway (FWD), slightly lower for 4WD
  • 0-60 Times: Around 9.5 seconds
  • Towing Capacity: 1,500 lbs (when properly equipped)
  • Trim-Level Features:
    • DX (Base): Features included steel wheels, vinyl flooring, and basic audio system. It was very basic and didn't have many creature comforts.
    • LX: Added features like air conditioning, upgraded audio system, power windows/locks/mirrors, and cloth upholstery. It was a more popular choice than the DX.
    • EX: Included all LX features plus alloy wheels, upgraded audio system with a subwoofer, and side airbags. It also offered unique features like the removable rear skylight and stain-resistant fabric. Some EX models had Real Time 4WD.
All trims shared the same engine and transmission options. The main differences were in comfort, convenience, and safety features. The Element was known for its easy-to-clean interior and versatile cargo space, regardless of trim.

What Problems Does the 2005 Honda Element Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2005 Honda Element are relatively minor, reflecting Honda's generally strong reliability. One common issue is related to the oxygen sensors, which can fail and trigger the check engine light. Another is the potential for rust, particularly in areas with road salt. The plastic body panels, while durable, can fade and become brittle over time due to sun exposure. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, particularly the compressor.
Recalls for the 2005 Honda Element have been issued for issues such as potential fuel leakage and faulty airbag inflators. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns are primarily related to wear and tear items, such as suspension components and bushings. The engine and transmission are generally robust if properly maintained. However, neglecting maintenance can lead to issues. Earlier model years (2003-2004) had some reports of valve train noise, but this was less common in the 2005 model. Regular oil changes and timely replacement of wear items are key to maximizing the Element's lifespan.

How long will the 2005 Honda Element last?

Given proper maintenance, a 2005 Honda Element can easily reach 200,000 to 300,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. Regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles), timely replacement of fluids (transmission, coolant, brake), and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial. Long-term durability strengths include the robust engine and transmission. Weaknesses over time include potential rust, fading plastic body panels, and wear and tear on suspension components. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Honda Element's tech and entertainment features were fairly basic for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. The LX and EX trims offered upgraded audio systems, with the EX adding a subwoofer. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems available.
Safety features included standard front airbags. The EX trim added side airbags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard on all trims. No traction control or stability control systems were available.
The 2005 Honda Element received generally good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA. The NHTSA gave it four stars for frontal crash protection for both driver and passenger and five stars for side crash protection. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating for frontal offset crash tests.
Optional features were limited. Some owners added aftermarket accessories like navigation systems, upgraded audio systems, and backup cameras. The focus of the Element was on practicality and durability rather than cutting-edge technology.

2005 Honda Element Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Honda Element had a starting MSRP of around $17,500 for the base DX model, ranging up to approximately $22,000 for a fully equipped EX 4WD. Currently, used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Element has depreciated significantly but retains decent resale value due to its reputation for reliability and unique design. Factors affecting resale value include: mileage, condition (especially rust), maintenance history, and trim level (EX models tend to command higher prices). The Element's cult following also contributes to its relatively stable used market value.

2005 Honda Element Cost of Ownership

The 2005 Honda Element is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for its class, averaging around 22 mpg combined. Maintenance costs are reasonable due to Honda's reliability and readily available parts. Repairs are usually straightforward and relatively inexpensive. Long-term ownership costs are generally low, making it a budget-friendly choice for those seeking a versatile and dependable vehicle. However, neglecting maintenance can lead to higher costs down the road.

2005 Honda Element Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Honda Element is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Honda Element Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2005 Honda Element competed with vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Scion xB, and Nissan Xterra. In terms of performance, the Element offered adequate power, similar to the RAV4 but less than the Xterra. The Scion xB was less powerful.
Feature-wise, the Element stood out with its unique interior design and versatile cargo space. The RAV4 offered more traditional SUV features, while the Xterra focused on off-road capability. The xB was more focused on style and compact size.
Reliability is where the Element shined, often outperforming its rivals. Hondas of this era are very reliable and have a very low cost of ownership when maintained well. The Toyota RAV4 also enjoys a strong reputation for reliability, while the Xterra has more known issues.
Price-wise, the Element was competitive. Used prices are generally comparable to RAV4s in similar condition. The Xterra can often be found for less. The Scion xB is also typically less expensive.
Alternatives? A Toyota RAV4 of the same year is a great alternative that provides more traditional SUV functionality with very similar reliability. For people who need more off-road capability, an Xterra may fit the bill. For those seeking more modern features, consider a newer crossover SUV. But in terms of all-around versatility and reliability, the Element holds its own.

Ranks #308 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Honda Element a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2005 Honda Element is ideal for those seeking a versatile, reliable, and affordable vehicle. It's particularly well-suited for outdoor enthusiasts, pet owners, and anyone needing a durable and easy-to-clean interior. Whether it's worth buying depends on its condition and price. A well-maintained Element with reasonable mileage is a good buy, especially if rust is minimal. The EX trim is generally preferred for its added features, but even a well cared for LX is a solid option. Since new Elements aren't available, the used market is the only option. If you need modern tech, this isn't the vehicle for you; but if you value reliability and practicality, the 2005 Honda Element is a compelling choice.

I've had my 2005 element for 3years. It's had a new belt, oil change, and tires, so far. Not bad for 150000 miles. Cleaning is easy, and good visibility on the road. I do love it.

Funnest Camping vehicle ever

Its a great road tripping car, great on gas if it were an automatic but that would take all the fun away from this vehicle. The plastic material in floor lining is amazing if you have pets; wont have to worry about scratching cushions or dog hair.

Honda needs to make the Element forever!

Reliable. Awesome! Convenient for using on all travels and adventures. All around use is rated at a 5 star! Excited to convert to a camper!

Honda Element Performed!

Bought Element with 100K + miles on it- hasn't skipped a beat. The AWD performed on the elements as well! If i was in the market for a used car on a budget, these dont dissapoint 🙂

Stylish, Practical and Great Overall Utility Car

If you are a traveler and enjoy driving around town, to the beach, mountains, lake or desert, this car is made for it all. I have the 4-wheel drive version so it is the most versatile version of them all. I love the way it looks. It's functional with fold up back seats, big cargo flatbed area in the back, unique side door openings, and great handling.
