Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2022 GMC Acadia is a mid-size SUV offering a blend of comfort and practicality. Part of the second generation launched in 2017, it provides three rows of seating. Key trims include SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali. Pricing generally ranges from the mid $30,000s to over $40,000, depending on the trim and options. It's popular for its refined interior and manageable size compared to larger SUVs.
The Good

The 2022 Acadia offers comfortable seating, a stylish design, and user-friendly technology. Its size is appealing to those who don't need a full-size SUV. The Acadia provides adequate performance for daily driving, while the Denali trim delivers a more luxurious experience. Its fuel efficiency is decent within its class, adding to its value.

The Bad

The 2022 GMC Acadia's third-row seating is cramped for adults. Some reviewers have noted the base engine lacks power when fully loaded. The infotainment system, while user-friendly, can occasionally be slow to respond. Reliability has been a concern for some owners, particularly with electrical components and transmission issues. Also, the cargo space behind the third row is limited.

What Problems Does the 2022 GMC Acadia Have?

The 2022 GMC Acadia, while generally reliable, has faced some reported issues. Common complaints include problems with the electrical system, such as the infotainment system freezing or malfunctioning. Some owners have reported transmission issues, including rough shifting or hesitation. There have been instances of recalls related to faulty seat belts or airbag systems, so it's crucial to check the vehicle's recall history via the NHTSA website.

Long-term reliability concerns center around the potential for engine issues, particularly with the timing chain and excessive oil consumption in the V6 engine. The 9-speed automatic transmission, though generally smooth, has shown signs of premature wear in some cases. It is advisable to check for any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to these issues before purchasing a used 2022 Acadia.

While not specific to the 2022 model year alone, earlier models of the second-generation Acadia (2017-2020) faced similar issues, suggesting potential carryover problems. Regular maintenance and thorough inspections are essential to mitigate these risks.

How long will the 2022 GMC Acadia last?

With proper maintenance, a 2022 GMC Acadia can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Key to longevity is adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires. Long-term durability can be affected by the aforementioned transmission and electrical system issues. Preventing rust is crucial in regions with harsh winters. Owners reporting consistent upkeep experience fewer problems, maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 GMC Acadia boasts a range of tech, entertainment, and safety features. Standard is an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offer built-in navigation and a premium Bose audio system. Driver-assistance features include standard lane keep assist, forward collision alert, and automatic emergency braking. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Safety is a priority, with multiple airbags, stability control, and traction control systems. Optional features such as a surround-view camera system enhance visibility and safety during parking maneuvers. The 2022 Acadia received good crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), though specific ratings may vary depending on the model and testing criteria.

The infotainment system is generally user-friendly, but some users have reported occasional lag or glitches. The driver-assistance features are helpful for highway driving and urban environments, enhancing safety and convenience. Overall, the Acadia's tech and safety features provide a well-rounded package.

2022 GMC Acadia Prices and Market Value

The 2022 GMC Acadia had a starting MSRP in the mid-$30,000s, with higher trims like the Denali exceeding $40,000. Current used market prices vary depending on mileage, condition, and trim, but typically range from the high $20,000s to mid-$30,000s. Depreciation is average for its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the presence of desirable options like AWD or premium trim levels. Models with lower mileage and a clean vehicle history report command higher resale prices.

2022 GMC Acadia Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2022 GMC Acadia are generally moderate for its class. Fuel costs depend on driving habits and engine choice, but expect average fuel consumption. Maintenance costs are typical, but potential repairs to the transmission or electrical system could increase long-term ownership expenses. While not the most economical option, it's not excessively costly, provided regular maintenance is performed and major repairs are avoided. Budgeting for potential unforeseen repairs is recommended.

2022 GMC Acadia Insurance

Insurance for a 2022 GMC Acadia is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 GMC Acadia Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 GMC Acadia competes with the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, and Chevrolet Traverse. In terms of performance, the Highlander and Explorer offer more powerful engine options. The Pilot and Highlander are known for their reliability. The Traverse offers more cargo space.

The Acadia's strength lies in its refined interior and user-friendly technology. However, its third-row seating is less spacious than some rivals. In terms of price, the Acadia is generally competitive.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Highlander for its reliability and resale value, the Honda Pilot for its spaciousness and family-friendly features, and the Kia Telluride (if available) for its value and feature-rich offerings. The Chevrolet Traverse, being a corporate cousin, offers similar features at potentially a lower price point. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities, but carefully comparing these alternatives is recommended.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 GMC Acadia a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 GMC Acadia is a good choice for families needing three-row seating but preferring a more manageable size than a full-size SUV. It's ideal for those prioritizing a comfortable interior and user-friendly technology. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and budget. A used Acadia, if thoroughly inspected and with a clean history, can be a good value. Consider higher trims like the SLT or Denali for enhanced features and luxury. If reliability is a top concern, carefully weigh the Acadia against alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot.

Awesome Ride!

I got my Acadia AT4 used. I was attracted it for its rugged look and it is fully loaded. I was downsizing from a Traverse and this one fit the bill. I love all the safety features, the way it drives, and the power from the V6 engine. It also includes Android Auto, which I use all the time. I was able to transfer my OnStar plan to this as well and am totally happy with my purchase!

This is my second Acadia (the first one was a 2017) I bought this 2022 brand new and choose the Denali trim. So, after 19 months, I am very satisfied. I would say that I fairly got what I had pay for.
