The Good
The 2009 Acadia provides a comfortable ride and ample passenger space, appealing to families. Its V6 engine offers adequate performance for daily driving. The design, while aging, avoids the boxy look of minivans. It presents a practical value proposition for buyers needing three-row seating without the stigma of a minivan. Its styling and available features also provide some emotional appeal.
The Bad
The 2009 Acadia is known for potential transmission issues, specifically the wave plate failure, which can lead to costly repairs. Other common problems include timing chain issues, power steering pump failure, and potential for excessive oil consumption. Electrical problems, such as issues with the door locks and windows, are also worth watching out for.

What Problems Does the 2009 GMC Acadia Have?
Excessive oil consumption is another recurring concern, requiring owners to frequently top off the oil. Some owners have experienced issues with the HVAC system, including problems with the air conditioning compressor and blend door actuators. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning door locks, power windows, and issues with the entertainment system, are not uncommon. Recalls for the 2009 Acadia have addressed issues like airbag malfunctions and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the transmission and engine components, particularly in vehicles that have not received regular maintenance. Premature wear and tear on suspension components is also frequently reported.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were limited for this model year. Rear parking sensors were available, but advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not offered. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, stability control, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain).
Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally show good performance, with overall five-star ratings in some categories. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also provided good ratings in frontal offset and side impact tests. Keep in mind that safety standards and testing methodologies have evolved since 2009, so these ratings should be viewed in context of the time. The absence of modern driver-assistance technologies is a significant difference compared to newer vehicles. The OnStar system provided emergency assistance and vehicle diagnostics.
Optional features included a sunroof, power liftgate, and heated front seats.

How Does the 2009 GMC Acadia Compare to Other Wagon?
In terms of price, a used Acadia is often more affordable than a comparable Highlander or Pilot, reflecting its reliability shortcomings.
Alternatives to the 2009 Acadia, depending on your priorities, might include: If reliability is paramount, a slightly older Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot could be a better choice, albeit possibly at a higher price point. If budget is the primary concern and you're willing to accept potential repair costs, the Acadia could be considered. However, a thoroughly inspected and well-maintained Traverse (its GM platform sibling) may also be a similar alternative. For better performance and handling, a newer Ford Explorer could also be considered.

2009 GMC ACADIAI have had my truck for about 4 yrs. A friend bought this truck for me and at the price of 6,600. And since then there have been major work done to this truck. To the point of putting the amount that was paid for the truck plus much more back in to it. Since it was bought it’s been one major problem after another. The truck is broke down again and I refuse to put any more money into it.

Awesome CarBought my 09 a year ago with only 56,000 miles. Haven’t had a single problem yet, besides the sensors in the tires going out. Driven it almost 20,000 miles since then. Regular upkeep is pretty easy and it’s not hard to work on.

Excellent Highway milesIt was a fantastic family vehicle - everyone was comfortable in it. The DVD player keep the kids entertained. Very good for long trips. It is also a very safe vehicle.

Solid CarWe owned our 2009 GMC Acadia FWD for 7 years. It was a solidly built car that rode well and had no significant mechanical issues. AWD would have been nice but overall it was a great car that we replaced in order to get a smaller car for my wife to drive.

I love the style and handling of the vehicle butIssues with the electrical system has to be jumped constantly. Repairs are hard due to accessibility. Are there any recalls not publicly posted on the website

Worse vehicle we have ever owned for performanceHad to replace timing chain, also check engine light is on, many issues with this vehicle. Purchased used were not told there was a recall on it, have owned it for 10 months and have never been able to drive it, it is not dependable

Nothing but problemsNeeds constant, expensive repairs. So for I’ve dumped over $5,000 into this lemon. Timing chain issue appeared a few months after warranty expired. Save yourself some money and get something reliable.

Only had a yr before check engine light came onVery disappointed thought I would at least not have to worry about check engine light for more than a yr so very disappointed with this can't pay high cost repairs and make the payments 😥

Worst vehicle out there BUYER BEWARE!!!!We bought a used 2009 Acadia 3 years ago for $20, 000, and have had nothing but trouble with it. Axles broken, transmission has gone out twice, all the computer modules have burned out, and had to be replaced, head gaskets needed replaced...among numerous other things. We have put in about $12, 000 + into this vehicle...don't let the great body style, and wonderful interior, and gadgets suck you in...the 2009 GMC Acadia SLT is no good, and should have been recalled...I have had second opinions done on it, and my new mechanic said his wife owns one too, and has had all the same issues I have had with mine. Buyer Beware!!
