The 2014 GMC Acadia is a mid-size SUV, part of the first generation that ran from 2007-2016 (though it received a significant refresh in 2013). It's known for its spacious three-row seating, making it a popular family hauler. Key trims included SLE, SLT, and Denali. The original pricing range typically started in the low $30,000s. Its smooth ride and ample cargo space contributed to its popularity.
The Good

The 2014 GMC Acadia provides a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to families (emotional). Its V6 engine offers adequate performance for daily driving (practical). While reliability can be a concern (see later prompts), a well-maintained Acadia offers good value for its size and features. The updated design from the 2013 refresh gave it a more modern look.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 GMC Acadia include potential for transmission issues, timing chain problems, and excessive oil consumption. Watch out for these issues, especially with higher mileage examples. Repair costs can be higher compared to some competitors. Electrical problems have also been reported.

What Problems Does the 2014 GMC Acadia Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 GMC Acadia often revolve around the powertrain. Timing chain issues are common, especially at higher mileages. Symptoms include a rattling noise upon startup. Transmission problems, such as harsh shifting or complete failure, have also been reported. Excessive oil consumption is another concern, requiring frequent monitoring and top-offs. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system and electrical components, such as the power windows and door locks.

Recalls for the 2014 Acadia include issues related to seat belts and side airbags not deploying correctly in a crash. Check the NHTSA website for a complete list of recalls and ensure any outstanding recalls have been addressed before purchasing a used model.

Long-term reliability can be a concern if regular maintenance is neglected. The issues mentioned above tend to worsen over time if not properly addressed. The 2014 model year doesn't stand out as significantly better or worse than other years in the first-generation Acadia's lifespan in terms of reliability, although the 2013 refresh did address some earlier issues.

How long will the 2014 GMC Acadia last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2014 GMC Acadia can realistically reach 150,000-200,000 miles or more. Many owners report keeping their Acadias for 10-12 years. However, the longevity heavily depends on regular oil changes, timely transmission servicing, and addressing potential issues (like timing chain or oil consumption) promptly. Weaknesses over time include the aforementioned powertrain concerns, as well as potential suspension wear and tear. Neglecting maintenance significantly shortens the vehicle's lifespan.

I am a 78 yr old female and have owned this vehicle since 2014. Great vehicle performance and reliability a comfort drive. The only problem I have is with the 2 front doors scraping the paint off the door sill. This vehicle was driven by owner of the dealership for a few months before I purchased it. On the whole I am still proud to drive this vehicle.

Disappointed that I have only had the car a little over a week and the engine light has already came on. Will not get this car again.

2014 GMC Acadia Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 GMC Acadia had a starting MSRP in the low $30,000s and could reach close to $50,000 for a fully loaded Denali trim. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Acadia has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and potential reliability concerns. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident-free status, and the presence of desirable options like AWD and the rear-seat entertainment system. Lower mileage examples command a higher price.

2014 GMC Acadia Cost of Ownership

The 2014 GMC Acadia is not particularly economical to own. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel economy is mediocre, especially with AWD. Maintenance can be moderate if sticking to regular oil changes and tire rotations. However, potential repairs, such as timing chain or transmission issues, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs can be higher than average due to potential reliability concerns. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential.

How Does the 2014 GMC Acadia Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 GMC Acadia competes with the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, and Chevrolet Traverse (its GM sibling). In terms of performance, the Acadia's V6 is comparable to its rivals. Feature-wise, it offers a similar suite of technology and safety options, though some competitors might have offered more advanced features at the time. The Highlander and Pilot generally have better reliability reputations. The Explorer offers a sportier driving experience, while the Traverse provides similar space and features as the Acadia at a potentially lower price point.

Compared to the Toyota Highlander, the Acadia falls short in reliability but may be slightly cheaper on the used market. The Honda Pilot offers similar space and better fuel economy in some cases, also boasting better reliability. The Ford Explorer has a more powerful engine option, but its reliability can also be a concern. The Chevrolet Traverse, being mechanically similar, is a good alternative if you can find one at a lower price.

If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot are better alternatives. If you're on a tight budget and need a spacious SUV, the Chevrolet Traverse could be a similar option. If you prioritize a sportier driving experience, the Ford Explorer might be worth considering.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 GMC Acadia a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 GMC Acadia is ideal for families needing three-row seating and ample cargo space who are on a budget. It can be worth buying used *if* it has a well-documented maintenance history and has been thoroughly inspected by a trusted mechanic *before* purchase. Look for examples with lower mileage and avoid those with known powertrain issues. The SLT trim offers a good balance of features without the Denali's higher price tag. Be prepared for potential repair costs and factor that into your budget. If reliability is your top priority, consider alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot.

I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "They don't make 'em

I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "They don't make 'em like they used to!" Well, my mom bought a 2014 GMC Acadia about six years ago, upgrading from a 2008 model. Honestly, the older model was quite a bit better. The 2008 barely had any problems in the five or six years we had it, but the 2014 has many more problems. And the 2014 was bought completely refurbished. For whatever reason, the automatic lift-gate will not work when it gets cold. It doesn't stay locked in the open position, you have to physically hold it open. Half of the powered windows don't work right either. The RR window can be rolled down with the RR switch, but it doesn't like being rolled back up. The only way to roll it up is by using the RR switch by the driver's seat. And the RL switch by the driver doesn't work at all. The FR seat belt barely latches into the belt buckle anymore. You have to push down hard to get the thing to hold. There is nothing caught inside the buckle mechanism, it's just worn out. I've seen cars that are more than 30 years old that don't have that problem. The seat belt buckle mechanism in the third row is also atrocious, especially in the middle seat. The belt doesn't give a lot of slack before getting stuck and being able to travel any further, making it very difficult to get one buckled in the backseat. Again, the 2008 Acadia never had these issues. GMC made a decent car in 2008, but a mediocre car in 2014. Not to mention GM used the exact same model that they did for the newer Saturn Outlook, which was discontinued when Saturn shut down in 2010.

On Board GPS and Panasonic DVD player problems

Mostly good but two rather disappointing accessories. 1) There are no updates available for the on board OEM GPS system 2) There are no instructions available for operating the onboard Rear Seat Panasonic DVD Player. It’s a royal pain trying to try to use it. Owned this vehicle for 5 years. Absolutely NO, NONE, ZIP help from GMC. LCinOH

Great spacious interior!

This car has been fantastic for me and my family. Very spacious interior with 2nd and 3rd row seats that fold flat. I was even able to transport my Dads wheelchair standing up in the rear flip up compartment. I would purchase again.

Best vehicle I've owned

This vehicle had all the features I wanted for our family. Black interior and exterior, third row seat (with captains seats in second row for easy access to third), remote start, heated seats, no leather seats, back up camera, touch screen and bluetooth, etc, and even had a DVD player for the backseats. I wanted to go back to an SUV because I prefer them for the winters, and after owning it a few weeks I am confident I made the right decision, I was looking at a few different makes/models, but ultimately the Acadia was the best out of all of them. The price was great for what I got, one owner who took very good care of it, it's comfortable and roomy, clean, drives very nice, and is reliable. Very happy with my purchase!
