The 2009 GMC Acadia is a full-size crossover SUV that debuted in late 2006 as a 2007 model. It's known for its spacious three-row seating and comfortable ride. The Acadia comes in SLE, SLT, and Denali trims. Original pricing ranged from approximately $30,000 to $45,000. Its popularity stems from offering minivan-like passenger capacity with a more stylish SUV aesthetic and available all-wheel drive. It was part of GM's Lambda platform family of crossovers.
The Good

The 2009 Acadia provides a comfortable ride and ample passenger space, appealing to families. Its V6 engine offers adequate performance for daily driving. The design, while aging, avoids the boxy look of minivans. It presents a practical value proposition for buyers needing three-row seating without the stigma of a minivan. Its styling and available features also provide some emotional appeal.

The Bad

The 2009 Acadia is known for potential transmission issues, specifically the wave plate failure, which can lead to costly repairs. Other common problems include timing chain issues, power steering pump failure, and potential for excessive oil consumption. Electrical problems, such as issues with the door locks and windows, are also worth watching out for.

What Problems Does the 2009 GMC Acadia Have?

The 2009 GMC Acadia has several frequently reported problems. The most concerning is the wave plate failure within the transmission, which can necessitate a complete transmission rebuild or replacement. This issue is costly and relatively common. Another prevalent problem involves timing chain issues, often signaled by a rattling noise, and potentially leading to engine damage if not addressed. Power steering pump failures are also reported, leading to difficulty steering.

Excessive oil consumption is another recurring concern, requiring owners to frequently top off the oil. Some owners have experienced issues with the HVAC system, including problems with the air conditioning compressor and blend door actuators. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning door locks, power windows, and issues with the entertainment system, are not uncommon. Recalls for the 2009 Acadia have addressed issues like airbag malfunctions and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the transmission and engine components, particularly in vehicles that have not received regular maintenance. Premature wear and tear on suspension components is also frequently reported.

How long will the 2009 GMC Acadia last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 GMC Acadia can reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or last 12-15 years. However, achieving this lifespan relies heavily on consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing issues promptly. Common weaknesses that surface over time include the aforementioned transmission (wave plate) and timing chain problems. Rust can also become a factor, especially in regions with harsh winters and road salt. Suspension components and the power steering system may also require attention as the vehicle ages. Ignoring these potential weaknesses can significantly shorten the Acadia's lifespan.

It was a fantastic family vehicle - everyone was comfortable in it. The DVD player keep the kids entertained. Very good for long trips. It is also a very safe vehicle.

This car has been great for our family of four. We have driven it on vacation several times. The kids love that they can lay the seats down in various positions on the trips and watch DVD's. The driver appreciates the radio and cruise controls on the steering wheel and the blue tooth hands free phone safety convenience. We purchased this vehicle with only 15,000 miles and have loved it through the rest of its miles. It has never been in an accident, and it has been in a garage since day one - the previous owners took great care of it too. Oil changes have been done every 3-4,000 miles.

Safe vehicle. Rides like a car but sturdy like a truck. Fits 7 people comfortable so its a great family vehicle. All wheel drive is also a plus in new England

Had to replace timing chain, also check engine light is on, many issues with this vehicle. Purchased used were not told there was a recall on it, have owned it for 10 months and have never been able to drive it, it is not dependable

We bought a used 2009 Acadia 3 years ago for $20, 000, and have had nothing but trouble with it. Axles broken, transmission has gone out twice, all the computer modules have burned out, and had to be replaced, head gaskets needed replaced...among numerous other things. We have put in about $12, 000 + into this vehicle...don't let the great body style, and wonderful interior, and gadgets suck you in...the 2009 GMC Acadia SLT is no good, and should have been recalled...I have had second opinions done on it, and my new mechanic said his wife owns one too, and has had all the same issues I have had with mine. Buyer Beware!!

So disgusted. Purchased new on 2009. The Acadia did everything we needed a vehicle to do EXCEPT have a quality engine. We even purchased the extended warranty. At 80,000 miles we were told the engine needs to be replaced. Warranty expired.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 GMC Acadia features standard tech like a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary input. Higher trims offer a premium sound system and a rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player. Navigation was an optional feature.

Driver-assistance features were limited for this model year. Rear parking sensors were available, but advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not offered. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, stability control, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain).

Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) generally show good performance, with overall five-star ratings in some categories. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also provided good ratings in frontal offset and side impact tests. Keep in mind that safety standards and testing methodologies have evolved since 2009, so these ratings should be viewed in context of the time. The absence of modern driver-assistance technologies is a significant difference compared to newer vehicles. The OnStar system provided emergency assistance and vehicle diagnostics.

Optional features included a sunroof, power liftgate, and heated front seats.

2009 GMC Acadia Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 GMC Acadia had an MSRP ranging from approximately $30,000 to $45,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $10,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and trim level. The Acadia has depreciated significantly due to its age and reported reliability issues. Higher mileage examples or those with documented mechanical problems fetch lower prices. Factors affecting resale value include a clean title, documented maintenance history, and overall cosmetic condition. The demand for large, older SUVs also plays a role.

2009 GMC Acadia Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2009 GMC Acadia are generally moderate, but can vary depending on your driving record and location. Fuel costs can be high due to its relatively low fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant due to the potential for costly repairs like transmission and timing chain issues. Long-term ownership can be expensive if major repairs are needed. Overall, the 2009 Acadia is not considered an economical vehicle to own, primarily due to potential repair expenses and fuel consumption.

2009 GMC Acadia Insurance

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 GMC Acadia Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2009 GMC Acadia competed against vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, and Chevrolet Traverse (which shared the same platform). In terms of performance, the Acadia's V6 engine was comparable to its rivals. Feature-wise, it offered a similar level of equipment in its class, though it lacked some of the advanced safety features found in later model years of its competitors. However, reliability is where the Acadia falls short compared to the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, both known for their superior reliability records. The Ford Explorer, while offering a more truck-like driving experience, can also present reliability concerns.

In terms of price, a used Acadia is often more affordable than a comparable Highlander or Pilot, reflecting its reliability shortcomings.

Alternatives to the 2009 Acadia, depending on your priorities, might include: If reliability is paramount, a slightly older Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot could be a better choice, albeit possibly at a higher price point. If budget is the primary concern and you're willing to accept potential repair costs, the Acadia could be considered. However, a thoroughly inspected and well-maintained Traverse (its GM platform sibling) may also be a similar alternative. For better performance and handling, a newer Ford Explorer could also be considered.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 GMC Acadia a Good Wagon?

The 2009 GMC Acadia is suitable for budget-conscious buyers who need three-row seating and are willing to accept the risk of potential repairs. It's worth buying *only* if it passes a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic, focusing on the transmission, timing chain, and oil consumption. A well-maintained example with documented service history is crucial. It's *not* recommended for buyers seeking long-term reliability without potential maintenance headaches. Opting for a lower trim like SLE, that requires less complicated components, over Denali might prove a more reasonable choice. Consider newer, more reliable alternatives if your budget allows.

2009 GMC ACADIA

I have had my truck for about 4 yrs. A friend bought this truck for me and at the price of 6,600. And since then there have been major work done to this truck. To the point of putting the amount that was paid for the truck plus much more back in to it. Since it was bought it’s been one major problem after another. The truck is broke down again and I refuse to put any more money into it.

Awesome Car

Bought my 09 a year ago with only 56,000 miles. Haven’t had a single problem yet, besides the sensors in the tires going out. Driven it almost 20,000 miles since then. Regular upkeep is pretty easy and it’s not hard to work on.

Solid Car

We owned our 2009 GMC Acadia FWD for 7 years. It was a solidly built car that rode well and had no significant mechanical issues. AWD would have been nice but overall it was a great car that we replaced in order to get a smaller car for my wife to drive.

I love the style and handling of the vehicle but

Issues with the electrical system has to be jumped constantly. Repairs are hard due to accessibility. Are there any recalls not publicly posted on the website

Nothing but problems

Needs constant, expensive repairs. So for I’ve dumped over $5,000 into this lemon. Timing chain issue appeared a few months after warranty expired. Save yourself some money and get something reliable.
