The Mitsubishi Mirage, a subcompact hatchback, has been a staple in the Mitsubishi lineup for years. The 2022 model continues this tradition. Key trims include the ES, LE, Carbonite Edition, and SE. Its popularity stems from its affordability and exceptional fuel economy. The pricing range typically starts under $15,000, making it one of the least expensive new cars on the market. Its small size also makes it easy to maneuver and park in urban environments.
The Good

The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage excels in value and efficiency. Its exceptional fuel economy appeals to practical buyers, while its compact size and surprisingly peppy styling offer an emotional appeal. It's also known for its straightforward reliability and ease of use, offering peace of mind at an affordable price. Though not a powerhouse, it gets you from A to B.

The Bad

The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage's weaknesses lie in its performance and refinement. Its engine is underpowered, resulting in slow acceleration. The interior materials are basic, and the ride quality can be harsh on rough roads. Potential buyers should also be aware of the limited cargo space and the engine's noise level at higher speeds. Road noise can also be significant.

What Problems Does the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage Have?

The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage generally enjoys a reputation for reliability, but some common issues have been reported. One frequently mentioned problem involves the CVT transmission, with some owners experiencing sluggish performance or unusual noises. Regular CVT fluid changes are crucial for long-term reliability.
Another area of concern revolves around the engine's modest power output. While not a 'problem' per se, the lack of power can be frustrating in certain driving situations, such as merging onto highways or climbing hills. Some owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system, specifically with its effectiveness in extremely hot weather.
Recalls for the 2022 model specifically are infrequent; however, it's wise to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any updates. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the durability of interior materials and the potential for wear and tear on the engine due to its small size and high operating RPMs. Maintaining the vehicle according to the recommended service schedule is vital to mitigating these concerns.
It is also important to consider the longevity of the battery, as some owners have reported shorter-than-expected battery life, particularly in colder climates. Routine battery checks and maintenance are advisable.

How long will the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage last?

With proper maintenance, the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is consistent oil changes, CVT fluid maintenance, and addressing minor repairs promptly. Long-term durability can be affected by the engine's small size; keeping up with scheduled services is paramount. Weaknesses may emerge in the CVT transmission if not maintained correctly. Rust can also become a factor in regions with harsh winters.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage offers a modest suite of tech and safety features, reflecting its budget-friendly nature. Standard on all trims is a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a rearview camera. Bluetooth connectivity is also standard, allowing for hands-free calling and audio streaming. Higher trims like the SE add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, enhancing the entertainment experience.
Driver-assistance features are limited but include available lane departure warning and automatic high beams on the SE trim. These features enhance safety and provide added convenience. Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and a suite of airbags.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA should be consulted for a comprehensive safety assessment. While the Mirage provides basic safety features, its small size may impact its performance in certain crash scenarios. Optional features are limited, focusing primarily on cosmetic upgrades or minor convenience items. Overall, the tech and safety features are adequate for the price point, but they are not as advanced as those found in more expensive vehicles.

How Does the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage competes with vehicles like the Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent, and Nissan Versa. Compared to these rivals, the Mirage offers a lower entry price, but it lags behind in performance and refinement. The Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent provide more powerful engines and more modern interiors. The Nissan Versa boasts a more spacious cabin and a longer list of standard features.
In terms of reliability, the Mirage is comparable to its competitors, but its engine's limitations can be a concern. Feature-wise, the Mirage's base trims are fairly basic, while rivals offer more standard equipment.
Alternatives to the Mirage include the Kia Rio, Hyundai Accent, and Nissan Versa, which offer a better balance of performance, features, and comfort. The Chevrolet Spark, while discontinued, might be a more affordable option on the used market. For those prioritizing fuel economy and a low purchase price above all else, the Mirage remains a viable option. However, for a more well-rounded driving experience, the other options mentioned represent better choices.

It's suitable for urban environments where maneuverability and parking ease are priorities. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs. If affordability is the top concern and performance is secondary, it can be a worthwhile option.
Buying used can offer even greater value, but a thorough inspection is recommended. The SE trim provides better features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it a more appealing choice. Consider alternatives like the Kia Rio or Hyundai Accent if a more refined driving experience is desired. Ultimately, the Mirage is a pragmatic choice for those prioritizing cost savings and fuel efficiency above all else.

Exceptional

I owned a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage Hatchback Rockford Fosgate edition that got 40+ mpg in the city and up to 50+ mpg on the interstate. That car was totalled in a wreck 2 weeks ago, I was hit from behind by a large pickup truck. I am now driving a 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage ES Hatchback and it is just as good. I give it a 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍

Mitsubishi Vehicles

In 2016 we bought our first brand new Mitsubishi Mirage. Our daughter was helping us move and was driving our new car, when suddenly she was hit on the passenger side by a drunk driver. The safety features of the Mitsubishi Mirage thankfully saved her. With the insurance money and the Gap Insurance, needless to say we bought another brand new Mitsubishi Mirage! Then our daughter, her husband moved to Missouri! They were planning to come for Christmas and the 4 seater Mirage wouldn’t work, so we bought a 7 seater Mitsubishi Outlander. Since they didn’t come and do to finances wouldn’t be able to come we decided to down grade to a new 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. While driving on the highway I hit something (even though I didn’t see it) that flattened three tires and one of the rims. The way the the SUV is made, I had no trouble pulling over to the side of the road. In fact I thought I only had one flat tire until we were towed to a tire shop and that’s when we found out how bad it was. They figured because it had rained the night before, that the water covered a pothole and that’s what I hit! They said we were lucky to be alive and nothing else was wrong with the car! Well being that my husband is sight impaired and I now have arthritis in my right hip and left knee. Getting in the SUV even with a step was a challenge! So after 4 years we traded it in for a brand new 2022 Mirage LE! These aren’t fancy inside but they have good features. Even the 2022 with its small 3 cylinder engine, has very good pickup and does very well going up hills, without to much trouble.,All Mitsubishi vehicles get great gas mileage and a wonderful warranty! I’ve never understood the bad reviews because we’ve been very happy with the vehicles we’ve had!

Good for daily routine for few persons!

If you are looking for a cheap car just to get the route from A to B point - this one is perfect for that. Not for families with children, not for parties. Good like a first car. Really small (probably one of the smallest cars that I've ever seen before). This fits 4 adults or 3 adults + 2 children (not on the child boosters \ seats). Or 2 adults and 2 children in child seats. Almost zero room for the luggage. Pretty good for gas - it's worst than hybrid cars but better than many other gas cars. On average about 30 mpg in the city for us. So in our new world with the highest rates on the gas - it's a good idea to buy cars like that just for daily job rides. Exactly at our Mirage, we have some noises on time of braking uses. It starts right after the purchase of this car. Nothing extra in our first 3-month use. So 4 from 5 for a good gas using but ugly design inside.
