The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is a subcompact hatchback designed for affordability and fuel efficiency. Launched as a budget-friendly option, the Mirage is available in a 5-door hatchback body style. Key trims include the DE and ES. Its appeal lies in its low price point and exceptional gas mileage, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking basic transportation. The original pricing range was around $13,000 - $16,000.
The Good

The 2014 Mirage's main advantages are its outstanding fuel efficiency and low price, appealing to practical buyers. While not thrilling, its simplicity can be perceived as reliable. Emotionally, the Mirage offers the freedom of car ownership at a very accessible price, providing a sense of independence, and good fuel economy can be seen as environmentally friendly.

The Bad

The 2014 Mirage suffers from a weak engine, resulting in slow acceleration. The interior materials are basic and can feel cheap. Handling is not particularly engaging. Potential buyers should watch out for transmission issues (especially the CVT), and carefully inspect the car's history for proper maintenance and potential accident damage.

What Problems Does the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage include issues with the CVT transmission, particularly slipping or failure. Some owners have also reported problems with the air conditioning system, including weak cooling or compressor failure. Other common complaints involve the car's overall build quality, with reports of flimsy interior components and paint that chips easily.
There have been recalls for the 2014 Mirage, including issues with the windshield wipers and potential fuel leakage due to faulty fuel tank ventilation valves.
Long-term reliability can be a concern, especially with the CVT. The small engine is often pushed hard, which can lead to premature wear. Rust can also be an issue in regions with harsh winters. Regular maintenance, especially fluid changes for the transmission, is crucial for mitigating these long-term concerns. Before purchasing, checking the vehicle history report for recall completion and service records is highly recommended.

How long will the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage last?

With good maintenance habits, the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or last 10-15 years. However, this relies heavily on consistent oil changes, transmission fluid maintenance (particularly for CVT models), and addressing minor issues promptly.
Long-term durability weaknesses include the CVT transmission, which can be prone to failure if not properly maintained. The engine, while economical, is small and works hard, potentially leading to increased wear over time. Rust can also be a factor, especially in colder climates where road salt is used.
Positive Owner Reviews

I own the CVT version and it performs admirably. Avg 40 mpg city and 45 mpg hwy. Its fun to drive and squeeze thru parking spots in a tight city. For longer distances the car can be uncomfortable so I had to purchase extra amenities like a foam seat cover and a center armrest console, both aftermarket and effective. I purchased mine used at 45k miles for only $7600 out the door, which is a great bargain to me. My insurance is cheap as well as my car note. The engine is peppy and likes to be driven hard, which enhances the fun factor. The CVT7 is perfectly suited to the 3cyl, doing 70mph @ 2000 rpm is excellent efficiency. Dont let Nissan's issues with the Jatco influence you against getting the automatic version, Mitsubishi programs the CVT7 much better, contributing to much less documented instances of premature failure. Its probably the most reliable CVT driven vehicle out there. Its mechanically simple, very low curb weight, and low hp/torque all contribute to getting 175k miles plus out of the CVT7. I would recommend this car to anyone who wants to spend their money on something else like their retirement or mortgage. Great, simple, reliable car.

Very nice little car to get you from A to B while saving money on gas. Would definitely buy it again. Reliability could be better as it is a very sensitive vehicle.

This car has met my needs and has gotten me place to place. Has good gas milage, but has only a 9-gal tank. Small trunk but roomy interior for how small the car is.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage offers very basic built-in tech and entertainment features. The base DE trim comes with a basic AM/FM radio. The ES trim upgrades to include a USB port and slightly better audio. There's no built-in navigation or advanced infotainment system available.
Driver-assistance features are also minimal, with no options for blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, or automatic emergency braking.
Safety features include standard front airbags, side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control (ESC).
Optional features, mainly on the ES trim, include alloy wheels and fog lights.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary, but the Mirage generally received good marks in moderate overlap front crash tests and side-impact tests. However, it received marginal or poor ratings in the small overlap front crash test, highlighting a potential weakness. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings are also available and should be consulted for a comprehensive safety assessment.

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage Prices and Market Value

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage had a starting MSRP of around $13,000 - $16,000 when new, depending on the trim level. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $9,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location.
The Mirage depreciates significantly due to its budget-oriented nature, modest performance, and overall perception. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the presence of desirable features like air conditioning and power windows. Low mileage and a clean title can help retain some value.

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its low value and safety record. Fuel costs are exceptionally low thanks to its excellent gas mileage. Maintenance is relatively affordable, with readily available parts. However, potential CVT transmission issues could lead to costly repairs. Overall, the Mirage is designed to be a budget-friendly vehicle, making it one of the most economical vehicles to own and operate.

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage competes with vehicles like the Chevrolet Spark, Nissan Versa, and Ford Fiesta (hatchback). In terms of performance, the Mirage lags behind most rivals, offering sluggish acceleration compared to the Fiesta or even the Spark. Feature-wise, it's quite basic, with competitors offering more advanced infotainment and safety options.
Reliability is a mixed bag; while the Mirage can be reliable with proper care, the CVT is a known weak point, whereas the Nissan Versa with the manual transmission tends to be very reliable. Price is where the Mirage shines, often being the most affordable option.
Similar alternatives include the Chevrolet Spark, offering comparable fuel economy and a slightly more engaging driving experience. A slightly used Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris would be better alternatives; these offer more space, better performance, and a stronger reputation for reliability. The Nissan Versa (sedan) is another budget-friendly car that offers more space, but lacks hatchback practicality.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage a Good Hatchback?

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage is ideal for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing fuel efficiency and affordability above all else. It's suitable for city driving and short commutes where performance isn't critical.
Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and expectations. It can be a decent choice as a very inexpensive used car if thoroughly inspected. Opting for an ES trim is recommended, as it offers essential features like air conditioning and power windows.
However, buyers seeking more performance, features, or a more refined driving experience should consider alternatives like a used Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris, even if they cost a bit more upfront, because the increased reliability could bring down long term costs.

Most Reliable & Fuel Efficient & Cheapest car ever

Best stock BT sound system in its class. Better than much higher end models. Great bass. I got over 64 miles per gallon driving it from Ottawa Canada to south New Jersey, on one tank of gas! 2014 model still running strong! Just change the oil, brakes and tires when needed. Cheapest to maintain ever. Routine maintenance is dirt cheap and so far, no other type of maintenance, none, at all, and it has over 120,000 miles! Get's the fuel efficiency of an hybrid but without worrying about an higher price or batteries. Roomy enough inside to fit 5 normal people. I drive it cross country all the time!! My favourite car ever!

No frills reliable and economical transportation.

We have purchased 3 current generation Mirage hatchbacks. I had a 2014 then 2015 ES 5speed, and currently my spouse drives a 2014 ES CVT. Personally I am a fan of choosing my own gears and I loved my 5 speed and do not at all care for the CVT. Neither transmission is particularly smooth (although it is a budget car) but the CVT really struggles in this car. It does not engage right away from a complete stop and screams when going up a hill or accelerating into highway traffic. However some prefer the CVT over the 5 speed so it is all about preference. These cars have gotten a lot of hateful reviews which they don't deserve. Yes they are loud, gruff, don't have much pep, and aren't very comfortable after about a 1 hour trip. However with those cons come a lot of pros. The Mirage is intended for affordable and reliable transportation and it wins. It is one of the cheapest new cars and comes with a fantastic warranty, great gas mileage and excellent reliability. We have never had any issues with any of our Mirages, which together have taken us over 175k miles. This car does best for city and rural driving, which is what it was intended for. At highway speeds of +65mph, the mpg drops rapidly. For speeds below that it is very easy to exceed the EPA estimate of 44 mpg. It is quite roomy for such a small car and versatile with the rear seats folded. The standard for ES trim keyless entry and start is quite convenient and unheard of for a car in this price range. I personally think it is a decent looking car, no head turner but not unattractive at all. It is a very simple car that does what it was made for fantastically. We have always kept up on all suggested maintenance and are hoping to get 200k mi out of this car.

Awesome small hatchback value

This is the perfect small car. Lifetime powertrain warrantee, transferable. Loved its ride and how much you can haul with it. I had a stick and never seemed to add gas to it (35+ mpg). Power is just about right. Moves quick, just a bit slow on uphill grades. Everyone who ever rode in it was amazed it was so nice.
