The 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage is a subcompact car, part of the fifth generation produced from 1997-2002. Available as a 2-door coupe or 4-door sedan, it offered affordable transportation. Key trims included the DE and LS. The original pricing ranged roughly from $10,000 to $13,000. It was popular due to its fuel efficiency and low price point, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.
The Good

The 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage's key advantages are its excellent fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers seeking to save money. Its simplicity contributes to reliability. While comfort isn't a highlight, its affordability and ease of driving may emotionally appeal to first-time car owners or those wanting a basic, dependable vehicle.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage include its underpowered engine, leading to slow acceleration. The interior is basic and lacks modern amenities. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters. Potential buyers should inspect for rust, check the engine for unusual noises, and test the transmission for smooth shifting.

2000 Mitsubishi Mirage: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options: A single engine option was available: a 1.5-liter inline-4 cylinder.
  • Horsepower: Approximately 92 horsepower.
  • Fuel Economy: EPA estimates typically ranged around 30 mpg city and 37 mpg highway.
  • 0-60 Times: Acceleration was not a strong point; 0-60 mph times were in the 10-12 second range.
  • Towing Capacity: The 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage was not designed for towing, and it has no official towing capacity.
  • Trim-Level Features:
    • DE (Base): Basic features including cloth seats, manual windows and locks, and an AM/FM radio. Air conditioning was often an optional upgrade.
    • LS (Upgraded): Typically included features like air conditioning, upgraded interior trim, and sometimes power windows and locks. Alloy wheels might have been optional.

While neither trim level offered extensive features, the LS provided a slightly more comfortable and convenient experience compared to the basic DE model. The focus was on providing affordable and fuel-efficient transportation rather than luxury or performance.

What Problems Does the 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage often revolve around typical wear-and-tear issues common in older vehicles. Rust is a significant concern, particularly in areas with road salt. Check the undercarriage, rocker panels, and wheel wells. Engine issues, such as oil leaks and worn piston rings, can occur due to age and mileage. Transmission problems, including slipping or rough shifting, are also reported, especially in automatic transmissions.

Long-term reliability concerns center around the durability of components like the air conditioning compressor, alternator, and starter motor. The suspension can also wear out over time, leading to a bumpy ride and compromised handling. Recalls for the 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage are relatively infrequent, but it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) database for any outstanding recalls related to safety or emissions.

While specific model year variations aren't drastically different, it's generally advisable to thoroughly inspect any used 2000 Mirage, paying close attention to rust, engine performance, and transmission health. Regular maintenance is crucial to prolonging the life of these vehicles.

How long will the 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage last?

With proper maintenance, a 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners have reported exceeding this mark with regular oil changes, tune-ups, and timely repairs. However, poor maintenance habits can significantly shorten its lifespan. Rust is a major long-term durability concern, particularly in regions with harsh winters. The engine and transmission, while generally reliable, can suffer from wear and tear over time, leading to decreased performance and potential failures. The lifespan significantly relies on how well the car was cared for. Expect more frequent repairs as the car ages.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage offered very basic built-in technology. The standard entertainment features typically included an AM/FM radio. CD players were sometimes available as optional upgrades or dealer-installed accessories. There were no advanced driver-assistance features like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available. Safety features were also minimal, consisting primarily of standard front airbags and seatbelts.

Optional features were limited, often including air conditioning, upgraded audio systems, and sometimes power windows and locks on higher trims like the LS. There were no built-in navigation systems or advanced connectivity options.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage typically showed moderate performance. While it provided some protection in frontal impacts, side impact protection was limited due to the vehicle's small size and basic safety design. It's important to note that safety standards and crash test methodologies have significantly advanced since 2000, so comparing these ratings to modern vehicles is not directly applicable. The lack of modern safety tech is a significant drawback compared to newer cars.

2000 Mitsubishi Mirage Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage had a base price ranging from approximately $10,000 to $13,000, depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices are very low, typically ranging from $500 to $3,000 depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to the vehicle's age, high mileage on most examples, and basic features. Resale value is primarily affected by the car's mechanical condition, rust presence, and overall appearance. Low mileage examples in excellent condition will command the highest prices, but even then, values remain quite modest. The vehicle is now worth only a fraction of its original price.

2000 Mitsubishi Mirage Cost of Ownership

The 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its age and value. Fuel efficiency is a strong point, minimizing fuel expenses. Maintenance is relatively straightforward and inexpensive, as parts are readily available and affordable. However, repairs may become more frequent and costly as the vehicle ages. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits and the car's condition. Overall, it is an economical vehicle, particularly if purchased at a low price and well-maintained.

2000 Mitsubishi Mirage Insurance

Insurance for a 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage competed with subcompact cars like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Ford Focus. Compared to these rivals, the Mirage generally lagged in performance and features. The Civic and Corolla offered better handling, more powerful engine options, and higher-quality interiors. The Focus provided a more modern design and improved driving dynamics. In terms of reliability, the Corolla and Civic typically outperformed the Mirage.

However, the Mirage often had a lower price point, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. If price is the primary concern, a well-maintained Mirage might be suitable. However, considering performance, features, and long-term reliability, a used Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla from the same era would be a better alternative, albeit potentially at a slightly higher price. The Ford Focus offers a similar balance but reliability can be hit or miss. Other alternatives include the Nissan Sentra or Hyundai Accent, offering a blend of affordability and features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage a Good Coupe?

The 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking basic, affordable transportation. It's most suitable for those who prioritize fuel efficiency and low initial cost over performance, features, and modern safety technology. It's worth buying only if found in good mechanical condition with minimal rust and at a very low price. A used Mirage might be suitable as a temporary or short-term solution. However, given its age and the availability of more reliable and safer alternatives, it's crucial to thoroughly inspect any potential purchase and factor in potential repair costs. Newer, more reliable used vehicles are generally a better long-term investment. Buying one with very low mileage and documented maintenance history is preferable, if available.

Best car I've ever had

My parents bought me this car in 2014. I've never had any problems with it and always did your routine checkup and tune ups. After 10 years and sitting at 270k miles the engine has finally gave out. Crying my eyes out right now to have to get rid of my baby but I'm going to be buying another one. Gas mileage is great In this car I can make a 4 hour trip and be under alittle under half a tank.

Great, Reliable, Cheap

Bought a 2000 DE sedan in 2004 with 95,000 miles on it. It is now 2009 with 150,000 and it still runs like new. It Accelerates very well for its engine size and handles responsively. I have had no problems with this vehicle at all. On top of that the mileage is great. I can make a 2 1/2 hour trip and still have over half a tank of gas. It was the best investment i've made. It might not be the best looking car but is very conventional and reliable.
