The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is a subcompact hatchback aimed at budget-conscious buyers. It's part of the Mirage's sixth generation. Key trims include the DE, ES, and RF. New, it started in the low $13,000 range. Its standout feature is its exceptional fuel economy, making it popular for city driving and those seeking to minimize gas costs. The Mirage offers affordability and efficiency in a small package.
The Good

The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage boasts exceptional fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers seeking savings. Its affordability makes it an accessible entry point to car ownership. While not luxurious, it's reasonably reliable and offers basic transportation, which can emotionally satisfy those prioritizing simplicity and budget-friendliness. The Mirage is easy to park and maneuver in urban environments.

The Bad

The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is known for its sluggish acceleration and limited power, which can be frustrating in highway driving. The interior materials feel cheap, and the ride quality is not very refined. Potential buyers should watch out for early signs of CVT transmission issues and ensure regular maintenance is performed to avoid problems. Rust can also be a concern in certain climates.

What Problems Does the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage often revolve around its continuously variable transmission (CVT). Owners have reported issues like hesitation, jerking, and premature failure, especially with higher mileage. Regular CVT fluid changes are crucial to prevent these problems. Other reported issues include weak air conditioning performance, particularly in hot climates, and some complaints about the car's overall build quality and interior materials holding up over time.

Recalls for the 2015 Mirage have addressed issues such as potential fuel leakage due to improper fuel tank welding and problems with the windshield wiper motor. Owners should check with Mitsubishi or the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all recalls have been addressed on any used model they are considering.

Long-term reliability concerns often center on the engine's small size and its ability to withstand extended periods of high-stress driving. While generally reliable with proper maintenance, some owners have reported engine-related issues at higher mileages. The car's suspension and brakes are also areas to monitor for wear and tear over time. Rust can be an issue in areas with harsh winters or coastal environments.

How long will the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, its long-term durability hinges heavily on diligent maintenance, particularly CVT fluid changes. Weaknesses over time include potential CVT issues, suspension component wear, and possible rust, depending on the climate. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing its lifespan. Owners who neglect servicing the CVT or defer other critical maintenance items may experience a significantly shorter lifespan.

This car is great for a first car! I’ve gotten this car as 16 year old brand new in 2015. Since then I had many oil changes and tire rotations. I use this car for transportation of friends and family, going to work and school. As of today I have over 200,000+ miles on this and it is still going strong. With me getting around 39-45mpg every day. (Back when gas was under a dollar I only paid $7 for a fill up. Now it’s $20 so definitely worth it instead of paying $40-$80 per fill up.) The only issue I have with it is the check engine light is on and doing diagnostics it has emissions issues with a small leak. The inside you get a basic radio I suggest getting a Bluetooth audio receiver so you can listen to your own music on your phone. Driving at night is one of the worst things in this car. You get blinded every time you go past a car in the opposite lanes. Also the cloth seats are amazing your xxx is never frozen compared to a leather seat.

I just got this car and I love it. Cheap on gas and I get lots of compliments on it. 5 Speed and shifts smoothly . It is a 2015 and with a few thousand down the payments are really inexpensive. Get one with low kms - it will go a long time.

I haven’t owned this car very long. The AC has already gone out , not cheap to fix. And it’s in the shop again, it’s going to cost $1500 to fix. It didn’t even show a check engine light or anything and it stalled on me twice. I constantly keep up on the maintenance

This car is basic transportation and will get me where I need to be. Very small and only 3 cylinders. Not quiet, has a lot of road noise.

The car get awesome gas mileage but, that where the pros end on this car. The car just isn't fun to own. The ride is soft making sure you feel every bump on the road. Also the suspension can't take anyone sitting in the back seat, when I picked up my friend the car was almost bottoming out. Mitsubishi's choice of tire size is almost impossible to find and are very fragile/expensive. I had had to replace 3 of my 4 tires under the first year of ownership. I would get rid of this car if I wasn't upside down with my loan since this car depreciates like milk.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage offers a basic level of technology and safety features suitable for its price point. Standard features on the base DE trim are minimal, including a four-speaker audio system. The ES trim adds more convenience, including power windows and locks, keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. A rearview camera was not standard, but available on higher trims or as an option.

Entertainment features are fairly limited, primarily focusing on basic audio functionality. Optional features may include an upgraded audio system, but the Mirage generally lacks advanced infotainment options found in newer or more expensive vehicles.

Driver-assistance features are minimal, with hill start assist available on ES models equipped with the CVT. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available.

Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and multiple airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA should be reviewed for specific performance in different crash scenarios. The Mirage generally received acceptable but not outstanding ratings in these tests. Consult the IIHS and NHTSA websites for the most up-to-date and detailed crash test results.

2015 Mitsubishi Mirage Prices and Market Value

The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage had a starting MSRP in the low $13,000 range when new. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $9,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Mirage experiences significant depreciation due to its budget-oriented nature and relatively low demand in the used car market. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and geographic location. Models with lower mileage and a clean service record command higher prices.

2015 Mitsubishi Mirage Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its value and safety record. Excellent fuel economy significantly reduces fuel expenses. Maintenance costs are average, but preventative care, especially CVT fluid changes, is essential. Repairs can be relatively inexpensive, but potential CVT issues could lead to higher costs. Overall, the Mirage is designed to be a budget-friendly option, keeping long-term ownership costs down.

2015 Mitsubishi Mirage Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage competes with other subcompact cars like the Nissan Versa, Chevrolet Spark, and Ford Fiesta (though the Fiesta was phased out). The Mirage excels in fuel economy and price, often undercutting its rivals. However, its performance lags behind, offering less power and a less engaging driving experience than the Fiesta or even the Versa. Features are also basic compared to competitors offering more advanced tech and safety options.

In terms of reliability, the Mirage is generally comparable, though CVT issues are a concern. The Chevrolet Spark offers similar affordability and is easier to park, but has a smaller cargo area. The Nissan Versa provides more interior space and a smoother ride, but fuel economy isn't as high.

Alternatives to consider would be a used Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris, which offer superior reliability, more versatile cargo space, and better overall driving dynamics, albeit at a slightly higher price point. If budget is the absolute top priority, the Mirage is a contender, but for a more well-rounded subcompact, exploring alternatives is recommended. A used Mazda 3 from the same year can often be found in a similar price range, offering vastly improved performance and features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage a Good Hatchback?

The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is ideal for budget-conscious buyers prioritizing fuel efficiency and affordability above all else. It's a good choice for city dwellers needing a small, easy-to-park car for commuting. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and expectations. It's more advisable as a used purchase, given its depreciation. Look for well-maintained examples with service records documenting CVT fluid changes. Higher trims like the ES, add worthwhile convenience features. If performance and refinement are important, consider alternatives, but for basic, economical transportation, the Mirage can be a viable option.

Transmission will begin to fail after 140k miles

We purchased this car in 2017, after we lost our Kia Rio from a deer. It was 2 years old and only had 7k miles. We commute 90 miles round trip. Up until now, we had no issues as we made sure to maintain oil changes, brake pads, tires, etc...Now the transmission is failing on us as we are approaching 144k miles. We were warned by more than one person that the transmission will likely be the first to go, but at the time we were in no position to shop around as this one became available from the dealership immediately and they gave us a 100k warranty. It is a great little car with great gas mileage but will not be worth the price of replacing the transmission. We decided to go back to the Kia dealership and traded this in for a brand new Kia Rio.

Most reliable car ever.

Fantastic gas mileage, literally haven’t done anything but oil changes, front brake pads and a set of tires to this car since purchasing it new in 75k miles. I call it a little energizer bunny it just keeps going and going.. the iPod interface is great. I would definitely recommend a newer Mirage as it comes with so much even in its most basic trim level like cruise control back up camera and so much more ..you can go over 300 miles on $15 of gas ..tires are expensive though because they are an awkward size that no other car uses.

This is exactly what Mitsubishi claimed it was.

Mitsubishi claimed to have designed the Mirage to be inexpensive to purchase, service, and repair. After almost 5 years and 63,000 miles with my 2015 Mirage I can definitively say that is exactly what it is. Bogus auto reviews tore this vehicle up stating it had low expected reliability and handled poorly, was slow and the ride was too soft. Well, at the $10,500 I paid for my 5 speed manual I can say it is the best handling, accelerating, and most fuel efficient vehicle out there. Driving like I stole it gets me 46mpg on average with a steady 55-60 mph yielding a consistent 50+ mpg. If you consider the cost compared to a Toyota Prius at $25,000 which was the only other car for sale at the time with that type of real world mpg, my Mirage cost quite a bit less than half the price of the Prius which was the gold standard for mpg. It was never designed to be a sports car with 300 hp. If it was meant to have 300 hp it would have been a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO, if it was meant to haul 2,000 lbs it would have been a truck. If it was meant to be stiff and precise in the corners it would have been any other sports car out there, but it wasn’t meant to be any of those. I wish auto reviewers would review a vehicle for what is was meant to be and not give a review just so the status quo will pat them on the back for praising their over-priced poor mpg vehicles. Don’t listen to the so-called auto experts, this vehicle has been flawless and transported me my 25 mile each way commute for the last 5 years while only requiring a new set of 4 tires for $216.00 for all four, 1 set of front brake rotors, and 2 sets of front brake pads which all 3 items added up to approximately $100.00 because I installed myself. This is the type of car to get you out of a tight financial situation, or allow you to save or spend your money on other things besides a huge car payment, gas, and maintenance. GREAT JOB MITSUBISHI!

One owner, excellent condition, dealer maintained

Never been to the dealership for repair on anything. Only for service. Very dependable car. One owner has babied it. Has new tires, blows cold air, no body damage, interior is like new. Well maintained car.
