The 2010 BMW M6 represents the pinnacle of performance and luxury from BMW's lineup. Part of the E63/E64 generation (2005-2010), it was offered as a coupe or convertible. Its unique engine and striking design made it a highly desirable performance car.
The Good

The 2010 BMW M6 offers exhilarating performance from its V10 engine, appealing to emotional buyers seeking a thrilling driving experience. The luxurious interior and comfortable ride make it practical for daily use. Its striking design turns heads. However, potential reliability issues and fuel inefficiency are drawbacks to consider. The M6 delivers a unique blend of power and prestige.

The Bad

Potential buyers of the 2010 BMW M6 should be aware of potential issues. These include the SMG transmission which can be problematic and costly to repair, rod bearing failures in the V10 engine, and high oil consumption. Electronic gremlins can also surface. What Problems Does the 2010 BMW M6 Have?

The 2010 BMW M6, along with other models sharing the S85 V10 engine, is known for several potential issues. One of the most significant is rod bearing failure, potentially leading to catastrophic engine damage. Regular oil analysis and preventative replacement of the rod bearings are often recommended.

Another common concern is the SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) transmission. This single-clutch automated manual can suffer from hydraulic pump failures, clutch wear, and electronic control unit (ECU) problems. Repairs can be very expensive.

High oil consumption is also a frequent complaint. While some oil consumption is normal in high-performance engines, excessive consumption can indicate underlying problems such as worn piston rings or valve seals.

Other potential issues include:
  • VANOS (variable valve timing) system malfunctions.
  • Throttle actuators failing.
  • Fuel injector issues.
  • Cooling system leaks.
Recall information should be checked with BMW directly or through the NHTSA website, as recalls can vary. Overall, the 2010 BMW M6 requires diligent maintenance and awareness of these potential problems to ensure long-term reliability. Pre-purchase inspections by a knowledgeable BMW technician are highly advised.

How long will the 2010 BMW M6 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 BMW M6 can reasonably achieve well over 150,000 miles. However, its longevity heavily depends on consistent and meticulous maintenance. Neglecting services like oil changes, SMG maintenance, and addressing potential issues promptly can significantly shorten its lifespan. The V10 engine, while powerful, is inherently more complex and demanding than more conventional engines. Long-term durability hinges on proactively addressing known weaknesses like rod bearings, throttle actuators, and the SMG transmission. Cars driven conservatively and well-maintained will undoubtedly last longer.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 BMW M6 offered a range of technology and safety features for its time. Standard tech included iDrive infotainment system, navigation, premium audio system (often Harman Kardon), Bluetooth connectivity, and xenon headlights. Optional features included a head-up display, enhanced premium sound system, and comfort access keyless entry.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern cars but included parking sensors, adaptive headlights, and dynamic stability control (DSC).

Safety features included:
  • Multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain).
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS).
  • Traction control.
  • Electronic Stability Control (DSC).
  • Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).
Crash test ratings for the 2010 BMW M6 specifically are difficult to find, as it was often grouped with the 6-Series models. However, the 6-Series generally performed well in safety tests conducted by organizations like the IIHS and NHTSA. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2010.

Overall, the 2010 M6 provided a good level of technology and safety for its era, though it lacks many of the advanced driver-assistance systems found in newer vehicles.

2010 BMW M6 Prices and Market Value

The 2010 BMW M6 had a starting MSRP of around $102,000 when new. Currently, used market prices range from approximately $20,000 to $40,000, depending on mileage, condition, and maintenance history. Depreciation has been significant due to the potential for high maintenance costs and the availability of newer, more technologically advanced models. Factors affecting resale value include: documented maintenance records, a clean title, low mileage, and the absence of major mechanical issues (especially related to the engine and SMG transmission). Convertibles typically command a slight premium.

2010 BMW M6 Cost of Ownership

The 2010 BMW M6 is a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are high due to its performance capabilities. Fuel economy is poor, requiring premium gasoline. Maintenance and repair costs are significantly higher than average, especially considering the potential for engine and SMG transmission issues. Long-term ownership requires a dedicated budget for upkeep. It is not an economical choice, but a passionate enthusiast's indulgence.

2010 BMW M6 Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 BMW M6 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 BMW M6 Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2010 BMW M6 competed with cars like the Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, and Audi RS5. In terms of performance, the M6's V10 engine offered a unique and thrilling experience, but the Porsche 911 provided sharper handling. The CLS63 AMG offered a more comfortable and luxurious ride. Feature-wise, the M6 was competitive, but rivals often had advantages in specific areas (e.g., Mercedes' infotainment).

Reliability is where the M6 struggles. The Porsche 911 is generally considered more reliable, while the CLS63 AMG had its own issues but perhaps less severe than the M6's engine and SMG concerns. Price-wise, used M6s can be attractive, but the potential for high maintenance costs should be factored in.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Porsche 911 (997 generation): More reliable and better handling.
  • Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG (W219 generation): More luxurious and comfortable.
  • Audi RS5 (B8 generation): All-wheel drive and a high-revving V8.
If reliability is a top priority, the Porsche 911 is a better choice. However, if the M6's unique V10 experience is appealing and you're prepared for potential maintenance costs, it could be a rewarding but potentially expensive ownership experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 BMW M6 a Good Coupe?

The 2010 BMW M6 is ideal for enthusiasts who crave a unique and thrilling driving experience, particularly the sound and power of a high-revving V10 engine. It's worth buying *if* you're prepared for potentially high maintenance costs and are willing to invest in preventative maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist is crucial. Look for examples with documented maintenance history and avoid cars with signs of neglect. The coupe or convertible choice depends on personal preference. It is not advisable for someone seeking a reliable and economical daily driver.

Just pick one up used from San Diego and drove 120 miles

Just pick one up used from San Diego and drove 120 miles home, enjoyed every mile of the journey. I was trying to find a 6 speed manual with a physical clutch to no avail. yes the smg transmission takes a little bit to get used to but it is a driver's car and it's very involving. The roar, the quickness, the road feel, totally a Ultimate Driving Machine. The SMG is not completely "manual" but not an automatic either, it doesn't even have "P". You want to park and want the engine to hold the car, put it in 1st or R before you turn off the engine.

Best Coupe I've ever Owned....

One of the best car I've ever owned. I've loved this car the moment I've laid my eyes on it. Nothing beats a naturally aspirated V0 engine.... I would never get rid of it if my wife did't say we need a bigger car... ;(

Best Car I've ever owned

This has got to be one of the best car ever made. Nothing feels better than a naturally aspirated V-10. Only selling it because we're going to have 2 kids and wifey needs an SUV. 🙁

Long Term Review

I've owned this car since it was new and have 35,000 maintenance free miles on it. It has been easy on brakes, oil changes and other such maintenance. It has been surprising low cost to drive, other than fuel, of which it loves to consume. Probably one of the best cars I have ever owned. The SMG shifting takes time to learn, but once you have it figured out, it is a very strong performer. The car actually takes a bit of time to learn to drive well, but once you do, it is a rocket ship with few competitors. The V10 sounds fantastic and makes every tunnel or parking garage a real treat. One cant help but give it a rev, just to hear her roar. Surprising low cost to drive, all fun, all the time - I would recommend this car to anyone interested in a daily driver and weekend race car. One note - forget about using the rear seat if the passenger is older than 2!

Fastest Car I've Driven

This car is badass. I bought it off the internet without a test drive. I wasn't disappointed when I picked it up 4 weeks ago. It handles great. My car is an automatic with the option of driving it manually with no clutch. It performs better in manual mode. I can't recommend it highly enough. Great car!!

Boy oh boy...

This sucker is fast. Why is it that the Germans make such great cars? Great comfort. Precise handling. Awesome braking capacity. V10 Engine is as solid as a Heinkel He 111. Exhaust note is sweet. A real driver's car and certainly not for wimps.
