The 2014 BMW M6 is a high-performance grand tourer, born from BMW's motorsport division. Available as a coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe (four-door coupe), it spanned model years 2012-2018 for this generation. Key trims include the base M6 and Competition Package. Pricing new ranged from around $110,000. Its potent twin-turbo V8, luxurious interior, and striking design made it a popular choice for those seeking performance and prestige.
The Good

The 2014 BMW M6 offers thrilling performance from its twin-turbo V8, paired with a luxurious and comfortable interior, appealing to emotional buyers. Practically, it boasts a striking design and solid build quality, though reliability can be a concern. While not the most efficient, it provides a unique blend of power and grand touring capabilities.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 BMW M6 include electronic issues, oil leaks (common in turbocharged engines), and the potential for costly repairs due to the complex engine. Watch out for worn-out suspension components, particularly on models with high mileage. Maintenance can be expensive, so a thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential.

What Problems Does the 2014 BMW M6 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 BMW M6 often revolve around its complex engine and electronics. Oil leaks are a common concern, particularly around the turbochargers and valve cover gaskets. Some owners have reported issues with the dual-clutch transmission (DCT), which can be expensive to repair or replace. Electronic glitches, such as problems with the iDrive system, sensors, and control modules, have also been reported.
There have been recalls issued for the F12/F13/F06 M6 related to potential fuel pump issues and other safety-related concerns. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for outstanding recall notices before purchasing.
Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the high-performance nature of the engine and the complexity of the vehicle's systems. Regular maintenance, using high-quality fluids, and addressing issues promptly are essential to minimize potential problems. The cost of parts and labor for repairs can be significantly higher compared to more mainstream vehicles. Pre-purchase inspection by a qualified BMW mechanic is highly recommended to identify potential issues before they become major headaches.

How long will the 2014 BMW M6 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 BMW M6 can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, this is highly dependent on maintenance habits. Neglecting scheduled maintenance or delaying repairs can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability can be affected by the wear and tear on the engine's turbochargers, the DCT transmission, and the suspension components. The electronic systems can also become more prone to failures as the vehicle ages. Regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and proactive maintenance are crucial to maximizing the lifespan of this high-performance vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 BMW M6 came equipped with a range of advanced tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features.
Built-in Tech & Entertainment: iDrive infotainment system with a high-resolution display, navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, premium sound system (Harman Kardon standard, Bang & Olufsen optional), voice control.
Driver-Assistance Features: Standard features include parking sensors, rearview camera, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features included lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, side and top view cameras, and night vision with pedestrian detection.
Safety Features: Standard safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and cornering brake control.
Crash-Test Ratings: While the specific M6 model wasn't directly tested by IIHS or NHTSA, the 6 Series Gran Coupe (similar platform) received good ratings in some IIHS tests. It's important to note that crash test results can vary based on body style and specific equipment.
The iDrive system, while powerful, can have a steep learning curve for new users. The optional driver-assistance features enhance safety and convenience, but some may find them intrusive. Overall, the 2014 M6 offered a comprehensive suite of technology and safety features for its time.

2014 BMW M6 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 BMW M6 had a starting price of around $110,000. Current used market prices typically range from $30,000 to $50,000, depending on mileage, condition, and options. The M6 has experienced significant depreciation due to its high original price and the higher running costs associated with a performance vehicle. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, service history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options like the Competition Package or Bang & Olufsen sound system. Convertibles generally hold slightly higher value than coupes and Gran Coupes.

2014 BMW M6 Cost of Ownership

The 2014 BMW M6 is a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are high due to its performance capabilities. Fuel consumption is considerable, especially with aggressive driving. Maintenance and repairs can be expensive, due to the complexity of the engine and the cost of BMW parts. Long-term ownership costs, including potential repairs, will be significantly higher than those of a mainstream vehicle. This car is definitively *not* economical to own.

How Does the 2014 BMW M6 Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2014 BMW M6 competes with vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG, Audi RS7, and Porsche Panamera. In terms of performance, the M6 is comparable, offering similar levels of horsepower and acceleration. Feature-wise, it's well-equipped, although some rivals might offer more advanced driver-assistance systems. Reliability is where the M6 lags slightly behind some competitors, with more reported issues than the Audi RS7, for instance. Price-wise, used M6s can be attractive, offering good value compared to newer models of its rivals.
Alternatives to consider include:
  • Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG: Offers similar performance and luxury with potentially better reliability (depending on the year).
  • Audi RS7: A blend of performance, luxury, and practicality with a reputation for solid reliability.
  • Porsche Panamera: A more driver-focused option with excellent handling and a wide range of engine choices.
  • Cadillac CTS-V (later models): American muscle with impressive performance and a more aggressive styling.
Whether an alternative is *better* depends on individual priorities. If reliability is a top concern, the Audi RS7 might be preferable. If driving experience is paramount, the Porsche Panamera could be a better choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 BMW M6 a Good Coupe?

The 2014 BMW M6 is ideal for enthusiasts who appreciate high performance, luxurious interiors, and a distinctive design. It's worth buying *used* if you're willing to accept the potential for higher maintenance and repair costs. A well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history is crucial. The Competition Package offers a noticeable performance upgrade. However, buyers should budget for potential repairs and maintenance. It's not recommended for those seeking a low-maintenance or economical vehicle. Prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection to mitigate risks and ensure a satisfying ownership experience. Consider an extended warranty if available and financially viable.

Fastest most well engineered Car I've owned.

I spent a lot of time trying to find a car that checked all the right boxes. I wanted a drop top. I wanted massive power. I wanted a German car. I needed back seats that people can actually sit in. A reasonable trunk. Good infotanement, nav, connectivity, etc. and an available CPO warranty. Some exclusivity. There are very few options - or basically ONE. This one. No regrets. The power/torque is ludicrous! The customization of that delivery is extreme. You can switch from regular driving to beast M mode in one button. The steering, suspension, exhaust, shift timing, ALL adjustable! So fun and yet so well mannered and YES reliable. Almost two years and not a hiccup with this car. German Engineering at it's extreme. YES!
