The 2016 BMW Z4 is a stylish and sporty two-seat roadster, representing the tail end of the E89 Z4 generation (2009-2016). Its retractable hardtop distinguishes it from soft-top competitors, offering coupe-like comfort when closed. Key trims include the sDrive28i, sDrive35i, and sDrive35is. When new, prices ranged from around $50,000 to $67,000. The Z4's blend of BMW performance, open-air thrills, and relatively luxurious appointments made it a popular choice for those seeking a fun and engaging driving experience.
The Good

The 2016 BMW Z4 offers a compelling blend of performance and style. Performance enthusiasts appreciate the powerful engine options and responsive handling. The retractable hardtop provides coupe-like comfort and security. The Z4's sleek design and BMW badge appeal to emotional buyers, while its decent fuel efficiency (for a sports car) and reasonable maintenance (depending on trim) offer practical benefits.

The Bad

The 2016 BMW Z4, while generally reliable, can be prone to certain issues. Watch out for potential problems with the retractable hardtop mechanism, which can be costly to repair. Some owners have reported issues with oil leaks and electrical glitches. Suspension components, particularly bushings, may wear out over time, impacting handling. Regular maintenance and inspections are crucial to mitigating these potential problems.

What Problems Does the 2016 BMW Z4 Have?

The 2016 BMW Z4, while generally reliable for a sports car, has some frequently reported problems. The most common concern revolves around the retractable hardtop. Issues with the mechanism, including motor failures, sensor malfunctions, and hydraulic leaks, can lead to the top getting stuck or failing to operate properly. Repairs can be expensive.

Oil leaks are another potential issue, particularly as the car ages. Valve cover gaskets and oil filter housing gaskets are common culprits. Electrical glitches, such as issues with the iDrive system, sensors, or lighting, have also been reported. Suspension components, especially bushings and control arms, can wear out, affecting handling and ride quality.

While the 2016 model year itself doesn't have a disproportionate number of unique problems compared to other years in the E89 generation, it's important to note that these issues are generally applicable to Z4 models from 2009-2016. Check for any outstanding recalls on the NHTSA website using the VIN. Prior to purchase, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to identify any potential problems.

How long will the 2016 BMW Z4 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 BMW Z4 can realistically provide 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. The key to longevity lies in consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing minor issues promptly.

Long-term durability can be affected by the retractable hardtop mechanism, which requires careful maintenance and can be prone to failure with age. Suspension components and bushings will need replacement over time. The turbocharged engines are generally reliable, but proper oil changes are critical. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten the lifespan and lead to costly repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 BMW Z4 offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard tech includes BMW's iDrive infotainment system with a central display screen, Bluetooth connectivity, a premium audio system, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Available optional features included a navigation system, upgraded audio systems (such as Harman Kardon), adaptive headlights, parking sensors, and heated seats.

Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to modern cars. It included features like stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and a tire-pressure monitoring system. More advanced driver-assistance systems like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not available.

Safety features included front and side airbags. As a low-volume sports car, the BMW Z4 was not crash-tested by the IIHS or NHTSA during its production run, so specific crash-test ratings are unavailable. However, it includes standard safety features expected for the model year, and BMW has a strong reputation for safety engineering.

2016 BMW Z4 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 BMW Z4's price ranged from approximately $50,000 to $67,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $18,000 to $35,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim.

The Z4 has depreciated significantly, which is typical for sports cars. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, service history, trim level (the sDrive35is typically commands a higher price), and color combination. Well-maintained examples with low mileage and desirable options will hold their value better.

2016 BMW Z4 Cost of Ownership

The 2016 BMW Z4 is generally considered relatively costly to own compared to more mainstream vehicles. Insurance costs can be higher due to its sports car classification. Fuel costs depend on driving habits and engine choice, but the Z4 isn't particularly fuel-efficient. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially for the retractable hardtop and complex mechanical components. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential for long-term ownership.

2016 BMW Z4 Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 BMW Z4 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Convertible Convertible with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 BMW Z4 Compare to Other Convertible Convertible?

The 2016 BMW Z4 competes with roadsters like the Porsche Boxster, Mercedes-Benz SLK (now SLC), and Audi TT Roadster. The Boxster offers superior handling and a more engaging driving experience, but typically commands a higher price. The SLK provides a similar retractable hardtop experience with a focus on luxury and comfort. The Audi TT offers a more modern interior and available all-wheel drive.

In terms of reliability, the Z4 is generally comparable to its German rivals, but all can be prone to expensive repairs. The Z4's styling is subjective, but many find it attractive. The Z4's iDrive system was considered dated by 2016 standards.

Alternatives depend on priorities. For pure driving thrills, the Boxster is a better choice, if the budget allows. For a balance of luxury and performance, the SLK/SLC is a good alternative. For modern tech and available AWD, the Audi TT Roadster is worth considering. Ultimately, test driving all options is crucial to determining the best fit.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 BMW Z4 a Good Convertible Convertible?

The 2016 BMW Z4 is ideal for driving enthusiasts who appreciate open-air motoring and BMW's signature driving dynamics. It's a good choice for those who want a retractable hardtop for added security and weather protection. Whether it's worth buying depends on your budget and tolerance for potential maintenance costs.

Buying used is the only option now, and a well-maintained example with a thorough pre-purchase inspection is crucial. The sDrive35i or sDrive35is offer more exciting performance, but the sDrive28i provides a more fuel-efficient and affordable entry point. Be prepared for higher ownership costs compared to mainstream cars.

I love that car and enjoy every moment I drive it.

The car I always wanted. Paid $28,000 for the car and spend $26,000 in repairs using my 3rd party warranty. Car is like new and fun to drive. Repairs were split even between engine, roof and roof hydraulic. The car had only 24K miles on when I bought it. Car is a bless to drive.

This car has a lot to offer.

Bought car in February รขโ‚ฌหœ22. Wow. It is a great vehicle. I know I am in the honeymoon stage butรขโ‚ฌยฆ so what? Performance, especially lane changes, is notable and fun. Increased acceleration when briefly passing, is so satisfying. The roof is magical. With top up, the car is luxurious; down, sporty. The seats are comfortable

You will love the handling when driving it hard.

I drove this car cross country on interstates & country roads and it handles everything comfortably. It excels on the turns of backroads, did 8 laps on Tail of the Dragon and mountain roads from Virginia to California, the best road trips of my life! Blue Ridge & Shenandoah Parkways in spring and backroads thru the mountains & deserts of the West in Fall. If you want a driving adventure, this is the car to take.

The complete package: Beauty and Brawn

Love at first sight. This car is one of the most beautiful cars out there. Top up or down, the style is impeccable. It's also powerful, yet refined. A true drivers car. The handling is amazing. You can't beat the feeling of cruising down a country road with the top down in this car.

Very sporty and great car to drive!

The Z4 is fun. If you want to drive fast or just put the top down and cruise it is a car to own. The added packages like M suspension make the drive very comfortable. The seats and leg room are perfect for a short drive or a trip across country. Such a solid vehicle I am very happy I bought one!!

Acura TL SH

i bought this car following my retirement, just for fun to drive around my neighborhood and to go to the beach. I choose the smaller engine since i don't intend to race. I would have preferred the Jaguar sport car but its too much bucks for my purpose. The car is a beauty especially it comes with the hard top. I use my suv for long driving.
