The Good
The 2021 BMW Z4 offers exhilarating performance, particularly in the M40i trim, with its powerful engine and sharp handling. Its stylish design and comfortable interior appeal to emotional buyers, while practical advantages include reasonable fuel efficiency for a sports car and BMW's reputation for quality. While not the most reliable car on the market, many consider its value justified for the driving experience.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2021 BMW Z4 include limited cargo space and rear visibility due to the roadster design. Some owners have reported minor electrical glitches or issues with the infotainment system. Also, BMW maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average. Watch out for potential tire wear due to the car's sporty nature and aggressive driving style.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2021 BMW Z4 Have?
Recalls are relatively rare for the 2021 Z4, but it's always wise to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any current or past recalls specific to the vehicle's VIN.
Long-term reliability concerns often center around the complex electronics and sophisticated engine components found in modern BMWs. The turbocharged engines, while powerful, can be more prone to issues over time compared to naturally aspirated engines if not properly maintained. Oil leaks are also a potential concern as the vehicle ages. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigating these risks. Owners should also be aware of the potential for increased maintenance costs associated with a performance vehicle like the Z4, particularly concerning brakes and suspension components.
How long will the 2021 BMW Z4 last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are plentiful, including standard forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors.
Safety is a priority, with features like anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. While the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) may not have conducted full crash tests specifically on the 2021 Z4, BMW vehicles are generally known for their strong safety performance. The Z4's rigid chassis and advanced safety systems contribute to occupant protection.
Optional features enhance the tech experience further. A head-up display projects important information onto the windshield, and a wireless charging pad provides convenient charging for compatible smartphones. A Harman Kardon surround-sound system delivers an immersive audio experience. Overall, the 2021 Z4 offers a well-rounded and technologically advanced driving experience.

How Does the 2021 BMW Z4 Compare to Other Convertible?
Reliability is a key consideration, and the Porsche 718 Boxster generally enjoys a slightly better reputation for reliability than the BMW Z4. The Audi TT Roadster also fares well in reliability surveys. Price-wise, the Z4 is often positioned competitively, offering a good balance of performance and features for the money.
Alternatives depend on individual priorities. If ultimate handling and precision are paramount, the Porsche 718 Boxster is a strong contender. If a blend of style, comfort, and technology is desired, the Audi TT Roadster is worth considering. If you prioritize luxury and a comfortable ride, the Mercedes-Benz SLC might be a better fit. Ultimately, the Z4 offers a compelling package of performance, style, and technology at a competitive price point, making it a strong choice for those seeking an engaging roadster experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 BMW Z4 a Good Convertible?

Great sports car even w/the turbo 4 cyl engineThis is my first BMW product, and I am very happy with it. I was somewhat skeptical about choosing the turbo 4-cylinder engine, but I am now glad I did. Unless you plan to race it, the turbo 4 has all the power one needs for street use, and as a side benefit it get amazing mpg. The turbo 4 car is well over 150 lbs. lighter than the turbo 6 cylinder equipped model, and this allows the car to have a 50/50 weight balance; therefore, it feels like a mid-engine car. I have owned many sports cars, and some with very high HP, but that power is almost never usable on the street. My car has all the BMW handling options, so overall, I have to rate it as one of, or even the, most enjoyable sports car I have ever owned.
