The Good
The 2011 BMW Z4 offers a compelling blend of performance and style. Emotionally, the responsive handling, powerful engines (especially the sDrive35i), and retractable hardtop provide an exhilarating driving experience. Practically, it offers reasonable fuel efficiency for a sports car, comfortable interiors, and iconic design. Although reliability isn't perfect, it is well-regarded when properly maintained.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2011 BMW Z4 include reported issues with the electric hardtop mechanism, potential oil leaks (especially on higher mileage examples), and some electrical gremlins. Owners should also be aware of possible issues with the direct injection system on the turbocharged engines, such as carbon build-up.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2011 BMW Z4 Have?
Carbon buildup on the intake valves is a potential issue with the direct-injection engines, which can affect performance and fuel economy. Regular maintenance, including oil changes and fuel system cleaning, can mitigate this.
While the 2011 model year itself doesn't have a significant number of model-specific recalls compared to other years, it's important to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls related to safety or emissions. Long-term reliability depends heavily on consistent and thorough maintenance. Neglecting regular servicing can lead to more significant and costly repairs down the line.
How long will the 2011 BMW Z4 last?
Long-term durability concerns often revolve around the electronic components, particularly the retractable hardtop mechanism, and the potential for oil leaks. Models with the turbocharged engines may require more frequent attention to the fuel system and turbocharger components to avoid issues. Properly maintained, it can offer years of enjoyable ownership, but neglect can lead to costly repairs.
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to modern cars, but the Z4 does offer Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), anti-lock brakes (ABS), and traction control. Optional features included adaptive headlights and parking sensors.
Safety features include front and side airbags, as well as knee airbags for both driver and passenger. Rollover protection is provided by reinforced A-pillars and a robust chassis design. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA are not readily available for the 2011 Z4, as roadsters are often not subjected to the same testing as other body styles. However, BMW has a strong reputation for safety, and the Z4 incorporates many standard safety features.
Optional features were common and can include heated seats, upgraded leather, and the M Sport package which provided enhanced performance and styling.

2011 BMW Z4 Prices and Market Value
Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a luxury sports car. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, service history, mileage, and the desirability of specific options (like the M Sport package). Models with lower mileage and a documented service history command higher prices. Convertibles and roadsters can experience seasonal price fluctuations, with higher demand during warmer months.

How Does the 2011 BMW Z4 Compare to Other Convertible?
Reliability can be a mixed bag; the Z4 may have slightly more reported issues than the SLK. The Boxster generally enjoys a stronger reliability reputation. In terms of price, the Z4 sits competitively within its class. Features are largely similar across these models, with optional packages adding various comforts and conveniences.
Alternatives to the Z4 include the Porsche Boxster, which is a superior driver's car but can be more expensive to maintain. The Mercedes-Benz SLK offers a similar blend of luxury and performance, with potentially slightly better reliability. The Audi TT Roadster provides a stylish and sporty alternative with available all-wheel drive, but it isn't quite as engaging to drive as the BMW or Porsche.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 BMW Z4 a Good Convertible?

Lots of fun, especially with the top downGreat 2-seater, lots of fun with the top down. Surprisingly, has ample storage. Great looking car IMHO. The retractible top is a plus, much better than a canvas top.

Extremely fun toyI bought this car strictly as a toy. This is NOT a practical vehicle. It is a two-seater, hard top convertible. When the top is down, there is hardly any trunk space. This is a sports car in every sense of the word: stiff, sporty handling and it feels every bump in the road. Having said all of that, it is an absolute JOY to drive. It is a masterpiece of engineering and a fantastic cruiser on a nice day. Expect it to be expensive to maintain or repair. If you understand what youβre getting into before you buy it, you wonβt be disappointed.

Sleekest, coolest car I've ever owned! The car is an eye-catcher! The silver color is classy, and the red leather interior is sleek. The car is so very fast and responsive! Absolutely hard to give it up, but we have a two-car garage and three vehicles (this one rarely driven - therefore the low mileage). It maintains its value and prestige - just hate to give it up!

A gem between other dull cars...BMW is again as expected, one of the best brands in the world. This car, Z4, is not only chic but very safety and strong build.

Powerful yet StylishI have owned this car for a year now and it?s been a blast. The power just kicks in when you want it too. When you put the top down, the exhaust just sounds marvelous along with the occasional burps from it (cherry on a cake). Stylish exterior and classy interior makes it an all round car.
