The 2013 BMW Z4 is a two-seat roadster, part of the second generation (E89) produced from 2009 to 2016. It boasts a retractable hardtop, blending coupe-like security with open-air thrills. Key trims included the sDrive28i, sDrive35i, and sDrive35is. New pricing ranged from around $48,000 to $62,000. Its stylish design, powerful engine options, and refined driving experience made it a popular choice for those seeking a sporty and luxurious convertible.
The Good

The 2013 BMW Z4 offers strong performance from its range of engines. Its sleek design and retractable hardtop provide an emotional appeal. While not the most reliable, it delivers a comfortable ride and decent fuel efficiency for a sports car. For practical buyers, it offers BMW's reputation and a relatively usable trunk.

The Bad

The 2013 BMW Z4's weaknesses include potential issues with the retractable hardtop mechanism, electrical problems, and oil leaks, particularly in the earlier model years of the E89 generation. Maintenance can be expensive due to its German engineering and specialized parts. The ride can be firm, especially on models with sport suspension.

What Problems Does the 2013 BMW Z4 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 BMW Z4, and the E89 generation in general, often revolve around the retractable hardtop mechanism. Owners have reported issues with the top failing to open or close properly, requiring expensive repairs. Electrical gremlins can also be a concern, including problems with sensors, the iDrive system, and various control modules. Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing, are another common issue, especially as the car ages.
Recalls for the 2013 Z4 have been relatively limited, but it's essential to check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date information. Long-term reliability can be affected by the complexity of the car's systems. The turbocharged engines, while powerful, require regular maintenance and can be prone to issues if not properly cared for. The suspension components, especially on models with the sport package, may also require more frequent replacement. Early E89 models (2009-2011) were sometimes reported to have more frequent issues with the hardtop and electronics than later models like the 2013, but preventative maintenance is crucial regardless of the model year. Specific issues related to the N20 engine (sDrive28i) might include timing chain problems, although this is less prevalent in the 2013 model year compared to earlier iterations of this engine in other BMW models.

How long will the 2013 BMW Z4 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 BMW Z4 can provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. The key is diligent upkeep, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing any minor issues promptly. Long-term durability hinges on avoiding neglect. Weaknesses over time often include the aforementioned hardtop issues, electrical problems, and oil leaks. Suspension components and bushings will likely need replacement as the car ages. Proper climate control and garaging can help preserve the car's interior and paint, extending its lifespan. Cars with documented service history tend to last longer and command higher resale values.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 BMW Z4 comes standard with BMW’s iDrive system, featuring a 6.5-inch display, which controls audio, navigation (optional), and vehicle settings. Standard entertainment features include a CD player, USB port, auxiliary input, and Bluetooth connectivity. Optional upgrades include a premium sound system.
Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to modern cars. Standard features include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), anti-lock brakes (ABS), and traction control. Optional features available included park distance control to aid with parking.
Safety features include front and side airbags, knee airbags for both driver and passenger, and active head restraints. The retractable hardtop provides added rollover protection.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS are not readily available specifically for the 2013 Z4. However, the Z4 models have generally performed well in independent safety assessments. It is essential to note that the lack of advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking means the Z4 relies heavily on the driver’s attentiveness and skill. The available run-flat tires eliminate the need for a spare and allows driving a limited distance on a flat tire.

2013 BMW Z4 Prices and Market Value

The 2013 BMW Z4 had a starting MSRP of around $48,000 for the sDrive28i, up to $62,000 for the sDrive35is when new. Current used market prices range from approximately $15,000 to $30,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The Z4 has depreciated significantly due to its age and higher maintenance costs associated with luxury vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include low mileage, excellent condition, a clean Carfax report, desirable options like the premium sound system and navigation, and the more powerful sDrive35i or sDrive35is trims. Convertibles generally depreciate more slowly in warmer climates.

2013 BMW Z4 Cost of Ownership

The 2013 BMW Z4 is considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its sports car classification and potential repair costs. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine but are generally moderate. Maintenance and repairs can be expensive due to the car’s complexity and specialized parts. Long-term ownership costs can escalate if preventative maintenance is neglected, leading to significant repairs like hardtop mechanism or engine issues. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential when considering a used Z4.

How Does the 2013 BMW Z4 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2013 BMW Z4 competes with roadsters like the Mercedes-Benz SLK (now SLC), Porsche Boxster, and Audi TT Roadster. In terms of performance, the Z4 offers a compelling range of engine options, with the sDrive35is rivaling the Boxster S for acceleration. However, the Porsche generally provides a sharper, more engaging driving experience. The SLK offers similar levels of luxury but often prioritizes comfort over outright performance. The Audi TT Roadster boasts attractive styling and a well-appointed interior, but its performance and driving dynamics are not as sporty as the Z4 or Boxster.
Reliability is an area where the Z4 can lag behind the Porsche and, to some extent, the Audi. The Mercedes-Benz SLK has similar reliability concerns. In terms of features, the Z4 provides a competitive set of standard and optional equipment, but its iDrive system is showing its age compared to newer infotainment systems.
Price-wise, a used Z4 can be more affordable than a comparable Porsche Boxster, making it an attractive option for those on a tighter budget. Alternatives to the Z4 include the Mazda MX-5 Miata for a more affordable and reliable, albeit less luxurious, roadster experience, or a newer used BMW 2 Series convertible for updated technology and similar driving dynamics with improved reliability. If budget allows, the Porsche Boxster is generally considered a better overall performer and more reliable option.

Ranks #96 Convertible

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 BMW Z4 a Good Sedan?

The 2013 BMW Z4 is ideal for those seeking a stylish and sporty convertible with a retractable hardtop. It's a good choice for those who appreciate BMW's driving dynamics and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs. It's worth buying used if found in excellent condition with a thorough maintenance history and a pre-purchase inspection. Opting for the sDrive35i or sDrive35is trims provides a more engaging driving experience. However, buyers should be prepared for potential repairs, particularly concerning the hardtop mechanism and electrical systems. If reliability is a top priority, a Porsche Boxster or newer BMW 2 Series convertible might be better alternatives.

Fun to drive, great control!!

Dreamed of owning a Z4 , it does not disappoint. Love the “transformer” hard top convertible, so cool! Takes curves like a dream, 0-60 in 7 seconds. Great on mpg. Plays cds or dvds on navigation system. Car is solid.

What a blast!

While even more fun with the top down, the retractable hard top makes it into a coupe in a mere 22 seconds. The 28i is enough power for most, and the 35i is a beast. The Z4 is a stunner; you'll look back at it every time you park it. I've had mine almost 2 years so far with no issues at all.

Best Weekend Car

This car is fantastic and drives great. It has a 2.0T, but drives much faster and smoother than most other 4-cyl turbos out there. The car has a refined, yet rowdy exhaust note that is bound to turn a few heads. It has been a very reliable car even at 70,000 miles. Beware, though, maintenance and parts are very expensive. A cracked headlight and module will cost you about $2800.

Joyless Joy ride

Uncomfortable, no space for anything bigger then what you can fit on the passenger's seat if you want to drive with the top down. Sounded rough all the time, engine does not purrrr.
