The BMW Z4, a two-door roadster, embodies open-top driving pleasure. The 2012 model is part of the second generation (E89), produced from 2009 to 2016. Key trims included the sDrive28i, sDrive35i, and sDrive35is. Originally, pricing ranged from approximately $48,000 to $62,000. The Z4 stands out with its retractable hardtop, offering coupe-like comfort and open-air thrills, combining sporty performance with sophisticated design, making it popular among driving enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2012 BMW Z4 offers a compelling blend of performance and style. Emotionally, it delivers a thrilling driving experience with responsive handling and a powerful engine, especially in the 35i and 35is trims. Practically, it offers a comfortable ride for a sports car, stylish retractable hardtop design and decent fuel efficiency for its class, making it a desirable roadster for both fun and daily driving.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2012 BMW Z4 include electrical issues (sensor failures), oil leaks (especially in older models), and wear and tear on the retractable hardtop mechanism. What Problems Does the 2012 BMW Z4 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 BMW Z4 often revolve around electrical issues. Sensor failures, particularly related to the engine and transmission, are not uncommon. Oil leaks can develop, particularly around the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing. The retractable hardtop mechanism can also experience issues over time, leading to malfunctions or requiring maintenance.
Some owners have reported problems with the iDrive system, including software glitches and unresponsive controls.
Recalls for the 2012 BMW Z4 have been issued for various reasons, including potential fuel pump failures, brake vacuum hose issues, and airbag inflator problems. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA to determine if any recalls are outstanding.
Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly as the vehicle ages. Issues such as coolant leaks, suspension wear, and general maintenance costs can increase. Regular maintenance and proactive repairs are crucial to mitigating these risks. Due to the age of the vehicle, rubber and plastic components will deteriorate over time, requiring replacement. Checking for corrosion, especially in areas exposed to road salt, is also recommended.

How long will the 2012 BMW Z4 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 BMW Z4 can provide well over 150,000 miles or 10+ years of service. Average annual mileage often falls between 8,000 and 12,000 miles, depending on usage. Long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires. Weaknesses over time include potential issues with the cooling system, electrical components, and the retractable hardtop mechanism. Addressing these proactively can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan. Ignoring recommended maintenance can drastically shorten the vehicle's lifespan and lead to costly repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 BMW Z4 boasts a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard entertainment includes a premium sound system, CD player, and auxiliary input. The iDrive infotainment system manages audio, climate, and vehicle settings; however, it's an older version.
Safety features include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), antilock brakes (ABS), and multiple airbags. Optional features included navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, heated seats, and parking sensors. Some models may have adaptive headlights for improved visibility.
Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern cars, primarily consisting of cruise control. The Z4 emphasizes driving experience over extensive driver-assistance technologies.
Crash-test ratings from IIHS and NHTSA for the 2012 BMW Z4 are limited, as roadsters are often not fully tested. However, BMW vehicles generally maintain high safety standards, and the Z4 incorporates features like reinforced body structure and rollover protection.
Owners could upgrade to enhanced sound systems and the BMW Assist emergency system with features like automatic collision notification.

2012 BMW Z4 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 BMW Z4 ranged from approximately $48,000 to $62,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $25,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant due to the car's age and mileage. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and trim level. Lower mileage and well-maintained examples command higher prices. The sDrive35is trim often holds its value better due to its increased performance.

2012 BMW Z4 Cost of Ownership

The 2012 BMW Z4 is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are moderate to high, reflecting its sports car status. Fuel costs are moderate, depending on driving habits and engine choice. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, particularly as the car ages, with BMW parts and labor being relatively expensive. Long-term ownership requires a dedicated budget for upkeep. While the sDrive28i offers better fuel economy, overall ownership costs lean towards the higher end of the spectrum compared to more mainstream vehicles.

2012 BMW Z4 Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 BMW Z4 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Convertible with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 BMW Z4 Compare to Other Convertible?

The 2012 BMW Z4 competes with roadsters like the Mercedes-Benz SLK, Audi TT Roadster, and Porsche Boxster. In terms of performance, the Z4 sDrive35is rivals the Boxster in acceleration, while the SLK offers similar power but often a softer ride. Feature-wise, the Z4 offers a retractable hardtop, a feature shared with the SLK, providing all-weather usability.
Reliability is a mixed bag; the Boxster generally holds a slight edge in long-term reliability, while the Z4's reliability is considered average. The Audi TT offers a more modern interior but lacks the same open-top thrill as the Z4.
Price-wise, the Z4 often represents a good value on the used market compared to the Porsche Boxster. Alternatives to consider include the Mazda MX-5 Miata, known for its affordability and driving fun, and the Nissan 370Z Roadster, offering a more raw performance experience. If reliability and driving dynamics are paramount, the Porsche Boxster is a better alternative, although at a higher price point. For a blend of luxury and performance, the Mercedes-Benz SLK is a comparable option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 BMW Z4 a Good Convertible?

The 2012 BMW Z4 is ideal for driving enthusiasts seeking an open-top experience with a blend of performance and style. It's worth buying used, particularly if you prioritize driving enjoyment and a retractable hardtop. The sDrive35i or sDrive35is trims offer superior performance. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial to assess potential maintenance needs. The car is best suited for those willing to invest in maintenance and repairs. Avoid if reliability is your top priority or if you need extensive driver-assistance features. It's a good option as a fun, weekend car, but may not be the most practical daily driver.

After moving to Florida, I've been looking for a used sport convertible as a 2nd car for having fun on the road. After test driving the Mazda Miata and the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth, I found the 2012 BMW Z4 to be much more comfortable for my size (6ft. 1in). I also like the classic design, additional luxury accessories and the retractable hardtop. Even though a 2012 Z4 is priced higher than later model Mazdas and Fiats, for me it was worth the extra money.

My Z and Me

I am a sport car guy. I have owned Jaguar XKE's in the past. I currently drive a V.W. Turbo as I say a motorcycle on four wheels. It will be my first and last V.W. Beetel, yes it is our fun car. I will either get an Aston Martin or keep the money in my pocket and get another BMW Z-4. I sort of like money in my pocket so it will be back to BMW, no shame. Enjoy the ride everyone, Arnie
