2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Review: Unreliable Compact Car With Expensive Problems

Rating: 4.03
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, introduced as a replacement for the Cavalier, is a compact car available in coupe and sedan body styles. Produced from 2005 to 2010, key trims include the base, LS, LT, and sporty SS. The Cobalt's popularity stemmed from its affordability, fuel efficiency, and available sporty SS trim. When new, prices ranged from around $14,000 to $22,000. Its simple design and ease of maintenance also contributed to its appeal.
The Good

The 2007 Cobalt offers a blend of advantages. Practically, it's affordable, fuel-efficient, and relatively reliable. Emotionally, the SS trim provides a sporty driving experience. The Cobalt boasts decent comfort for its class and a straightforward design. Its overall value makes it an appealing option for budget-conscious buyers.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2007 Cobalt include a somewhat bland interior, potential for electrical issues, and reports of power steering problems. Rust can be a concern in certain climates. The ignition switch recall also impacts some models, so verifying that recall repairs were completed is crucial. Some find the rear seat cramped.

What Problems Does the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt often revolve around electrical issues, including problems with the instrument panel, power windows, and door locks. The most significant concern is the ignition switch recall, affecting Cobalts from this era. This recall addressed a faulty ignition switch that could inadvertently switch to the "accessory" position, potentially disabling airbags and power steering, increasing the risk of a crash. It's imperative to verify that any 2007 Cobalt under consideration has had this recall service performed.
Power steering failure is another recurring issue, with some owners experiencing sudden loss of power assist. This can make the car difficult to steer, especially at low speeds. Rust can also be a long-term reliability concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters and road salt. Some owners have reported issues with the fuel system and sensors, leading to check engine lights and drivability problems. Premature wear of suspension components, such as struts and bushings, has also been noted. While the engine itself is generally considered reliable, proper maintenance, including timely oil changes, is crucial to prevent issues. The automatic transmission, particularly the 4-speed, can sometimes exhibit rough shifting or slipping with age and high mileage.

How long will the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt can reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners have reported their Cobalts lasting well over a decade with diligent care. However, consistent maintenance is key. Neglecting oil changes, ignoring warning lights, and postponing repairs can significantly shorten the lifespan. Over time, weaknesses tend to emerge in areas such as electrical components, suspension parts, and the automatic transmission. Rust can also become a significant factor, particularly in colder climates. Regularly addressing these potential issues can extend the Cobalt's useful life.

Bought my SS Supercharge in 2007. We did have one issue with the wiring. Took it to the shop, was given a rental car, no charge. And since then nothing to complain about. It still looks new in and out. I'd recommend this car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt offered relatively basic tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included an AM/FM radio and CD player. Higher trims might have featured upgraded audio systems with MP3 compatibility. There were no advanced driver-assistance features available.
Safety features included standard front airbags and available side-impact airbags on some trims. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available as an option, but not standard on all models. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was also offered on some trims, enhancing handling and stability.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied depending on the specific test and model year. The Cobalt generally received good ratings for frontal crash protection but lower ratings for side-impact protection, particularly in models without side airbags.
Optional features included power windows, power locks, remote keyless entry, and cruise control. Compared to modern vehicles, the 2007 Cobalt lacks features like Bluetooth connectivity, touchscreen infotainment systems, and advanced safety technologies such as lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring. Its simplicity can be seen as a positive for some buyers, while others may find it outdated.

2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt ranged in price from approximately $14,000 to $22,000 depending on the trim level and options. As a used car, prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Cobalt has depreciated significantly over time, which is typical for compact cars. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, accident history, and whether it has had the ignition switch recall performed. The sporty SS models tend to hold their value better than the base or LS trims due to their performance and desirability.

2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its classification as a compact car. Fuel efficiency is decent, especially with the base engine. Maintenance costs are also relatively low, as parts are readily available and affordable. Repairs can be inexpensive for common issues. However, potential electrical problems and the possibility of more significant repairs over time could increase long-term ownership costs. Overall, the Cobalt offers an affordable entry point and manageable running expenses.

2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a LS W with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Compare to Other LS W?

The 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt competed with rivals like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, and Mazda3. Compared to the Civic and Corolla, the Cobalt generally offered a lower price point, but lagged behind in terms of overall reliability and resale value. The Ford Focus provided a similar driving experience and feature set, but also suffered from some reliability concerns. The Mazda3 offered a sportier driving experience and more refined interior, but at a higher price.
In terms of performance, the Cobalt SS stood out with its supercharged engine, offering a more engaging driving experience than most of its competitors, excluding perhaps the MazdaSpeed3. However, the base Cobalt models were less inspiring in terms of performance.
For buyers prioritizing reliability and resale value, the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla would be better alternatives. For those seeking a sportier driving experience, the Mazda3 would be a good choice. If budget is the primary concern, a well-maintained Ford Focus or Hyundai Elantra might be considered, but with careful inspection for potential issues. The Cobalt can be a decent option if found at a very low price and has a clean maintenance history, but its competitors generally offer more compelling packages.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt a Good LS W?

The 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking affordable transportation. It can be worth buying *used* if found in good condition with a documented maintenance history and proof that the ignition switch recall has been addressed. The SS trim might appeal to those seeking a more sporty driving experience on a budget, but these are often harder to find in good condition.
Avoid examples with significant rust or signs of neglect. Compared to newer cars, the Cobalt lacks modern safety and technology features. Overall, the 2007 Cobalt represents a basic and affordable option, but careful inspection and a low purchase price are crucial for a worthwhile investment. It's best suited as a temporary or short-term transportation solution.

Best economical used car

I owned a 2007 Cobalt LT for 6 years as a daily driver. It was by far one of the best and most reliable cars i've had. never once had a problem with the drive train. The biggest issue I had was having to replace ball joints frequently. parts are very cheap and readily available just about anywhere. It always got 30 mpg on the highway and kept up with traffic well.

You don't want one of these.

I have not had car long and had nothing but problems. Fuel leak, heater fan, fuel pump. Junk!! This is my first and last Chevy. The battery is in the trunk and when you disconnect the battery you can't open trunk. You cannot get into trunk from back seat. Awful set up. Very unsafe most cars you can in an emergency.

Everything cost more and I do not feel safe in thi

As long as I have had my 2007 COBALT , It's had one problem after another . It has a wireing problem , sometime it will start after turning the key , sometime it takes 5 or 6 trys before it will start. The turn signal quiet working . The passenger side turn signal light quiet working , the drivers seat won't move . The sounds of the Engine has a high pitch sound that bothers my ears . I like the shape of the car body . I do not like having the battery in the back of the car . Its ride is ruf and it wounders all over on the road , it does not hug the corners . When going through the car wash , the radio antenna come out . I am very unhappy with this car

Wife's little sport car.

We bought it new, it is a 2 door LT model, 4 cyl. it has tons of pep, a great looked, Econo interior with not many accessories. Great in town car and loves to go on the highway.

Most perfect car anyone could have!

This car got the job done for me it ran perfectly and I didn’t have a single problem once with it. I would definitely buy another one and I recommend people to buy this car.
