2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Review: Not the Best Used Compact on the Market, but Sportier Than Most

Rating: 3.61
Based on 45 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the Cavalier in Chevy's lineup, offering a more modern and refined compact car. Available as a coupe or sedan, it spanned model years 2005-2010. Key trims included the base model, LS, LT, and sporty SS. The initial pricing ranged roughly from $14,000 to $20,000. Its affordability and available sporty SS trim with a supercharged engine contributed to its popularity.
The Good

The 2005 Cobalt offered a blend of practicality and style. Its strong points included decent fuel efficiency, particularly with the base engine. The SS trim appealed to emotional buyers with its sporty performance. For practical buyers, its affordability and relatively comfortable ride for a compact car were attractive.

The Bad

The 2005 Cobalt was known for some reliability issues, including problems with the ignition switch (later subject to a recall), power steering, and sensors. Rust could also be a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Potential buyers should carefully inspect these areas before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Have?

The 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt has several frequently reported problems and recall history items. One of the most significant issues was the ignition switch, which could unexpectedly switch to the "accessory" or "off" position while driving, causing loss of power and disabling airbags. This led to a major recall affecting numerous vehicles, including the 2005 Cobalt.
Other common problems included:
  • Power steering failure: Owners reported loss of power steering, making the car difficult to steer, especially at low speeds.
  • Sensor issues: Problems with the oxygen sensors and mass airflow sensor were also frequently reported.
  • Fuel System: Some owners reported issues with the fuel system
  • Rust: Rust, particularly on the undercarriage and around the rear wheel wells, was a concern in regions with road salt.
  • Electrical issues: Various electrical problems, including issues with the instrument cluster and lighting, were reported.
Long-term reliability concerns centered around the durability of the engine and transmission, as well as the longevity of various sensors and electronic components. While some Cobalts proved to be reliable, the frequency of reported problems was higher than some of its competitors.

How long will the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt last?

With good maintenance, a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt could potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, due to the known issues, consistent upkeep is crucial. Many examples on the used market will have between 150,000 and 250,000 miles. Long-term durability is often affected by the quality of maintenance performed. Weaknesses over time include the degradation of suspension components, increased susceptibility to rust, and potential failure of electronic sensors. Regular oil changes and timely repairs are vital for extending the Cobalt's lifespan.

I drove this car off the dealership lot brand new in 2005. It has been very dependable and great on gas and mileage. Although. I did recently buy a new car I have decided to keep it as a back up. I love my little silver cobalt!

Bought it new in 2005. Started breaking right after the warranty expired. I have replaced many parts that failed too early. Many recalls. It may not pass inspection this time due to rust. I will never again by GM. Avoid this car. Avoid GM.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt offered a fairly basic set of tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims might have included features such as satellite radio and upgraded sound systems.
Driver-assistance features were limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were often optional, and electronic stability control (ESC) was not widely available, even as an option, in the earlier model years.
Safety features included front airbags as standard, and side airbags were available as an option.
Crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) varied. Some ratings indicated adequate protection in frontal crashes, but side-impact protection was sometimes rated lower. It's important to check the specific ratings for the body style (coupe vs. sedan) and model year when considering safety performance. Later model years saw some improvements in safety features and crash test results.

2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt ranged from approximately $14,000 for the base model to around $20,000 for the SS trim. On the used market, prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant due to the age of the vehicle and the known reliability issues. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has been subject to any recalls. Models with clean titles and documented maintenance records command higher prices.

2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Cost of Ownership

The 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt generally offers relatively affordable insurance rates due to its age and value. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 2.2L engine. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential reliability issues. Long-term ownership costs can vary significantly depending on the specific vehicle's condition and maintenance history. Addressing potential problems early is essential for keeping overall costs in check.

2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt competed with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus, and Mazda3. In terms of performance, the Cobalt SS offered a competitive edge with its supercharged engine, but the base models lagged behind the Civic and Mazda3 in driving dynamics. Features were comparable to the Focus, but the Corolla and Civic generally offered more refined interiors.
Reliability was a significant weakness for the Cobalt compared to the Corolla and Civic, which are known for their dependability. The Focus presented similar reliability challenges.
Price-wise, the Cobalt was often more affordable than the Corolla and Civic, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.
Alternatives to consider include the Honda Civic (for reliability and resale value), the Toyota Corolla (for its dependability and fuel efficiency), and the Mazda3 (for its sporty handling and attractive design). If reliability is a top priority, the Civic or Corolla are generally better choices. If budget is a primary concern and you find a well-maintained Cobalt, it could be a viable option, but a thorough inspection is essential.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt a Good Coupe?

The 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt is best suited for budget-conscious buyers seeking affordable transportation, provided they are aware of the potential reliability issues. It might be worth considering if found in good condition with documented maintenance and a clean title, especially if the price is significantly lower than competitors. The SS trim could appeal to enthusiasts seeking an affordable performance car, but a thorough inspection is crucial. Buying a 2005 Cobalt requires careful due diligence, focusing on checking for rust, past recalls, and signs of potential mechanical problems. Newer, more reliable alternatives might be a better investment in the long run.

Great car, overly price at the time of purchase.

This is a great car. Totally love it. It has 1800 miles on it/ 2005 purchased/ but now over 138000 on it. I want to see it turn over one more time to hit 200k. All highway miles. Handle well on the highway. Headlights are not the greatest. It stopped on me driving at 60 mph which was not good. Power steering is getting bad. Outside paint job on top is the worse I have had on any car purchased. My Cobalt still going and its 2021.

Save your money!

Let's start off with the exterior, the damage to the top coat they use to protect the paint is just horrible!! My car looks just terrible, next we will move onto how badly the under body gets so rusted just from sitting on a street!! No grass, no dirt no piles of anything just a parking spot in a lot it got so bad I needed to replace the fuel line & the filtration line, I was leaking gas & not even a check engine light came on!! Lastly this is the pne that really gets me upset, after paying almost $500 to replace those lines two day's later the anti theft light came on & now my car won't start!! Nobody will help me nor take responsibility for it happening on their watch! So I'd love to know how to get this car running again, I've tried all the you tube advice on reprogramming the key yet NOTHING works, that anti theft light just won't go off!! Please help someone????

I've replaced almost the whole car and the problems only get worse I'm more or less scared to drive the car and you fix it once you'll fix it until it no longer runs.
