What Problems Does the 2018 Ford Transit Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2018 Ford Transit can vary. Some owners have reported issues with the SYNC 3 infotainment system, including touchscreen freezes and software glitches. Problems with the door latches have also been mentioned. Specific engine-related complaints, such as issues with the fuel injectors or turbocharger (on the EcoBoost models), are less common but can occur.
Recalls for the 2018 Ford Transit should be checked through the NHTSA website using the VIN to determine if the specific vehicle was affected. Common recall areas across various model years often relate to safety systems, fuel systems, or electrical components.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the wear and tear of components subjected to heavy use, especially in commercial applications. Brake wear, suspension components, and transmission issues can arise, particularly in vehicles with high mileage. Regular maintenance and careful driving habits can mitigate some of these risks. Diesel models, while offering better fuel economy for some, can sometimes have more complex maintenance requirements and potential issues related to the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and emissions systems.

How long will the 2018 Ford Transit last?

A well-maintained 2018 Ford Transit can reasonably be expected to reach 200,000 miles or more. Many commercially used Transits achieve this, provided routine maintenance is followed. Years of service can vary widely depending on usage. A personal-use Transit might last 10-15 years, while a heavily used commercial van might see closer to 5-8 years of optimal service. Long-term durability hinges on consistent oil changes, timely brake service, and addressing any warning signs promptly. Weaknesses over time often include rust, especially in colder climates, and potential wear on suspension and drivetrain components due to heavy loads.
Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
This Transit has been a dependable vehicle for my business. It's not fancy, but it gets the job done. Plenty of cargo space and relatively easy to maintain. Fuel economy could be better.
Maria L.
We converted this Transit into a camper van and it's been fantastic! The high roof provides ample headroom, and the chassis is sturdy. Some minor electrical issues but overall very happy.
Susan P.
We use this for our delivery service and it's been very reliable. The cargo area is well-designed, and the turning radius is surprisingly good for its size.
Negative Owner Reviews
Robert K.
Bought this used and it's been a decent value. The ride is a little rough, and the engine noise is noticeable on the highway. However, it's spacious and functional.
David M.
I've had some issues with the transmission. It shifts a little rough sometimes. Otherwise, it's a good van but the transmission concern worries me.
Karen A.
I've noticed some minor rust starting to appear, which is a bit disappointing. Otherwise, the van has been reliable. I'm getting it treated to prevent further corrosion.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Ford Transit offers a range of tech and safety features, varying by trim level and optional packages.
Built-in Tech & Entertainment: Base models typically include an AM/FM radio and basic audio system. Higher trims, like the XLT, feature Ford's SYNC infotainment system with a touchscreen display (often 4-inch or 6.5-inch). Optional features included navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB ports.
Driver-Assistance Features: Available driver-assistance features include a rearview camera (standard on most trims), lane-keeping assist, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. These features enhance safety and convenience, especially when maneuvering the large van in tight spaces.
Safety Features: Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, stability control, and a full complement of airbags. The 2018 Transit has not been fully crash-tested by both the IIHS and NHTSA, so definitive ratings are limited. However, available safety tech demonstrates Ford's commitment to passenger protection.
Optional Features: Many optional features were available, including upgraded audio systems, power windows and locks, keyless entry, and various seating configurations. These options allowed buyers to tailor the Transit to their specific needs.

2018 Ford Transit Prices and Market Value

The 2018 Ford Transit's starting MSRP ranged from approximately $33,000 to $45,000 when new, depending on configuration and trim. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and location, but expect to find them in the range of $18,000 to $35,000. Depreciation is affected by mileage, condition, and whether the vehicle was used commercially. Well-maintained Transits with lower mileage and a clean title hold their value better. The demand for commercial vans also influences resale value, making them relatively stable compared to passenger cars.

2018 Ford Transit Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Ford Transit's ownership costs can be moderate to high. Insurance premiums can be higher than smaller vehicles due to its size and potential commercial use. Fuel costs depend on the engine and driving habits, with the diesel offering better economy. Maintenance costs are typical for a large van, but repairs can be expensive, especially for the EcoBoost engine or complex systems. Overall, the Transit is not the most economical vehicle to own, particularly if used for demanding commercial purposes.

2018 Ford Transit Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Ford Transit is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Van Cargo with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Ford Transit Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Van Cargo?

The 2018 Ford Transit competes with vans like the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ram ProMaster, and Nissan NV. In terms of performance, the Transit offers a good range of engine options, similar to the Sprinter. Feature-wise, it's competitive, especially in higher trims, but the Sprinter can offer more luxury and advanced tech. Reliability is a key consideration; the Transit generally fares well, but the ProMaster can be a more budget-friendly option with simpler mechanicals. Price-wise, the Transit is generally more affordable than the Sprinter but may be slightly more expensive than the ProMaster or NV.
Alternatives:
  • Mercedes-Benz Sprinter: Offers more refinement and available technology, but at a higher price.
  • Ram ProMaster: More affordable and simpler mechanically, but may lack some of the Transit's refinement.
  • Nissan NV: Another budget-friendly option with a strong V8 engine available, but with fewer body configurations.
For those prioritizing affordability and ease of maintenance, the Ram ProMaster might be a suitable alternative. For buyers seeking more luxury and features, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is worth considering, although at a significantly higher cost.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Ford Transit a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Van Cargo?

The 2018 Ford Transit is a versatile and capable van ideal for businesses needing cargo or passenger transport, and individuals seeking a customizable vehicle for camper conversions or other specialized uses. It's worth buying if you need a spacious and adaptable van with a wide range of configurations. A used 2018 Transit can be a good value, especially if it has been well-maintained and has lower mileage. Consider the XLT trim for better features and driver-assistance systems. Inspect for rust and check service records before purchasing. Avoid high-mileage ex-commercial vehicles if possible.
