The 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a compact crossover SUV, slotting between the Outlander Sport and the Outlander in Mitsubishi's lineup. It borrows the "Eclipse" name from the sporty coupe of the past, but in a more practical form. Model years for this generation launched in 2018. Key trims include ES, LE, SE, and SEL. Pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $30,000 when new. It stands out for its distinctive styling and available all-wheel control (AWC), which offers enhanced handling in various conditions.
The Good

The 2020 Eclipse Cross offers a comfortable ride and distinctive design that appeals to emotional buyers. Its available all-wheel control provides confident handling. Practical buyers appreciate its competitive price, decent fuel efficiency, and comprehensive warranty. While not a performance leader, it provides adequate power for daily driving and a user-friendly interior.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2020 Eclipse Cross include its somewhat underpowered engine, which can feel strained during acceleration or when fully loaded. The rear visibility can be limited due to the split rear window design. Some may find the infotainment system less intuitive than competitors. It's wise to check for any potential CVT transmission issues or electrical glitches during pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, and some earlier model years, often revolve around the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Some owners have reported experiencing hesitation, jerky acceleration, or unusual noises from the CVT. It's important to maintain the CVT fluid according to the manufacturer's recommendations to mitigate these issues.
Another area of concern can be the infotainment system. Some users have reported glitches, slow response times, or connectivity problems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Software updates may address some of these issues, but they can still be a point of frustration for some owners.
Other reported issues include occasional electrical problems, such as sensor malfunctions or issues with the climate control system. Some owners have also mentioned concerns about the durability of certain interior components, like the seat upholstery. It is important to check the car's history for recalls. Checking the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website will give you the most up-to-date recall information. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic can help identify potential problems before buying a used 2020 Eclipse Cross. Generally, Mitsubishi has a reputation for reliability, but these areas should be considered.

How long will the 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross last?

With regular maintenance and responsible driving habits, a 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, potentially lasting 10-15 years. Long-term durability hinges heavily on proper CVT maintenance, as this is a known weak point. Other factors influencing longevity include climate, driving conditions, and adherence to the recommended service schedule for oil changes, filter replacements, and other preventative measures. Watch for potential rust issues in areas with harsh winters and road salt. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more costly repairs later on.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross comes equipped with a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a rearview camera, and Bluetooth connectivity. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a Rockford Fosgate premium audio system.

Driver-assistance features available on the 2020 Eclipse Cross include:
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking

The SEL trim includes a multi-view camera system, providing a 360-degree view around the vehicle.

Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be checked for the 2020 model year to get a comprehensive understanding of its safety performance. Ratings can vary depending on the specific testing criteria and updates to safety standards. Always refer to the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most accurate and up-to-date information. The availability of certain features may vary depending on the trim level and optional packages selected.

2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Prices and Market Value

The 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross had a starting MSRP of around $23,000 and could reach approximately $30,000 for the top-tier SEL trim with options. Current used market prices typically range from the mid-teens to the low twenties, depending on the trim, mileage, condition, and location. The Eclipse Cross depreciates at an average rate for its class. Factors influencing resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable features like all-wheel drive and advanced safety technology. Vehicles with clean titles and documented maintenance records generally command higher prices.

2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Cost of Ownership

The 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross generally falls into the economical category for long-term ownership costs. Insurance premiums are typically average for a compact crossover. Fuel costs are reasonable, given its fuel economy ratings. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively affordable. However, potential CVT repairs could increase costs. Overall, the Eclipse Cross offers a decent balance between purchase price and long-term expenses, making it a reasonably cost-effective option, provided that maintenance is kept up.

2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Minivan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Compare to Other Minivan?

The 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross competes in the crowded compact crossover segment against rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Subaru Crosstrek. In terms of performance, the Eclipse Cross lags behind the CR-V and CX-5, which offer more powerful engine options. Feature-wise, it's competitive, especially with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto availability. Reliability is generally considered good, but the CVT transmission can be a potential weak point compared to the more proven reliability of Toyota and Honda.

Price is where the Eclipse Cross shines, often undercutting competitors. However, the RAV4 and CR-V offer better resale value. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience and a more upscale interior. The Subaru Crosstrek provides standard all-wheel drive and is a good option for those prioritizing off-road capability and value.

Alternatives to consider might include the Mazda CX-5 for a more refined driving experience, the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 for superior reliability and resale value, or the Subaru Crosstrek for standard all-wheel drive at a lower price point. Each alternative depends on individual priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross a Good Minivan?

The 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish and affordable compact crossover with available all-wheel drive. It's worth considering, especially on the used market, for those prioritizing price and features over outright performance. The SE and LE trims offer a good balance of features and value. However, potential buyers should have the vehicle inspected, paying close attention to the CVT transmission. If long-term reliability and resale value are top priorities, consider alternatives like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. If you're drawn to its styling and can find a well-maintained example at a competitive price, the Eclipse Cross can be a worthwhile option.

Greatest Car I Have Ever Owned

I just bought his car in June. Unfortunately for me someone hit my right front fender and it was in the body shop for 3 weeks. I love the comfort and how intuitive the interior is. Things are just in the right place. For me the 2020 is the perfect size. I had a DodgeJourney that just didn’t fit int my carport. I can pull this int the parking spot and have plenty of room. I do believe this is the favorite car I have ever bought and it looks sweet.

Horrible choice

My family was highly upset that I chose Mitsubishi in the first place due to there only being two service repairs shops in northeastern OH. After visiting the location and doing research they advised me several times that I was making the wrong decision. Based on reviews of the dealer my dad would not co-sign. I convinced him that I really wanted the 2020 cross and that everything would be fine after being convinced by my sales rep. My father said ok and agreed to co-sign for me. Red flag, I spent over 20 mins arguing with the sales rep to make my paper work numbers match for the down payment. Red flag my dad had changed his mind again and had me return the vehicle right before we signed and said he had a bad feeling. I convinced him to change his mind. Red flag the sales rep told me I had 45 days to pay car note which I only had 30 days from signing to pay it. We went back and forth and after he got irritated from me calling him a lier then the due date was changed making my car note higher. Red flag I took the vehicle home and on 12.1.2020 the engine stared idling on its own and I knew something was wrong I contacted finance they had me call services for 1 week no answer kept getting put back in que. Red flag on 12.6.2020 the check engine light came on for cam shaft. I called them first thing 12.7.2020 and was giving the run around and listened to everyone say that’s not my area keep calling services. Services answered and said that they were available 12.16.2020 and the second location available 12.15.2020. I became highly upset brand new vehicle off show floor and I have to wait for service after being promised by sales rep to pull the vehicle in and it will be top priority because it was brand new. Red flag I contacted my finance company and asked out of the contract they said it was to late but reached out to the dealer for me to get me better assistance. After being transferred 5times to a voicemail finance was irritated that she called making the statement “I didn’t know you hold the clients hand after closing the deal” finally I was called lier and told to drop the vehicle off at 9am on 12.9.2020 for them to test it. Point is I should not have never purchased this vehicle and I’ve made the biggest mistake of my life. I wish I could give the vehicle back and walk away. I could go on but no more space.
