The Good
The 2002 Galant offered reliable transportation and decent comfort at an affordable price, appealing to practical buyers. While not a performance car, its adequate power and comfortable ride made it a competent daily driver. Its simple, understated design also held a certain appeal for those seeking a no-frills sedan.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses include rust, especially in areas with road salt. Transmission issues have been reported. Interior plastics can be prone to cracking and wear. The 2.4L engine may experience oil leaks as it ages. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate these issues.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2002 Mitsubishi Galant Have?
Engine-related problems can include oil leaks, especially from valve cover gaskets and rear main seals. The 2.4L engine is generally reliable, but some owners have experienced issues with excessive oil consumption as the engine ages.
Interior components, such as the dashboard and door panels, can be susceptible to cracking and fading due to prolonged sun exposure. Power window regulators are another area that may require attention over time.
While specific recalls for the 2002 model year should be checked with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), general recalls for similar Mitsubishi vehicles around that time often involved issues with airbags and other safety components. Thorough maintenance records and a pre-purchase inspection are strongly recommended to identify and address any potential problems.
How long will the 2002 Mitsubishi Galant last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard front airbags. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available as an option, typically on the LS trim. Side airbags were not offered. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was not available.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) should be checked for specific performance details. Generally, vehicles of this era had lower crash-test ratings compared to modern cars due to less advanced safety technology and structural design.
Optional features varied by trim level and could include a sunroof, leather seats, and upgraded alloy wheels. Keep in mind that the Galant lacked many of the modern conveniences we now take for granted, such as Bluetooth connectivity, navigation systems, and advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking.

How Does the 2002 Mitsubishi Galant Compare to Other Sedan?
Reliability is a mixed bag. While the Galant can be dependable with proper care, the Camry and Accord generally enjoy a better reputation for long-term reliability. Price-wise, the Galant was often more affordable than its Japanese rivals when new, and that trend continues in the used market.
Alternatives to the Galant include the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, which offer superior reliability and resale value, albeit at a higher price. The Nissan Altima provides a sportier driving experience. The Ford Taurus is a larger, more comfortable option, but its reliability can be questionable. If reliability and longevity are top priorities, the Camry or Accord are better choices. If budget is the primary concern and you find a well-maintained Galant, it can be a reasonable option.

320k miles and going strongThis car is actually a 2003 Mitsubishi. It is driven mostly highway miles. It has had every dealer recommended service over it's lifetime. They recommended I get the belt and water pump replaced in late spring so I am planning to have that done soon. The car does have a small oil leak and I have to check the oil often. It's quiet, smooth running and I can't believe I've gotten this much milage out of it and it's still going strong. I do want to mention that everything inside the car is in tip top condition, from the leather seats to the small press on overhead lights. They are sturdy and well made. I've had an equinox before and everything inside broke. The seat handle, the press on lights the cup holder, the lid on the visor mirror etc everything on the Mitsubishi is very sturdy and still functioning like day one! Great car! Like I said 320k and going. I'm totally impressed!

MOST RELIABLE CAR I HAVE OWNED. VERY SMOOTH RUN.A VERY SMOOTH VEHICLE, WORTH MONEY. GIVES GOOD MILAGE, LOW MAINTAINANCE, AND RELIABLE. VALUE FOR MONEY. THIS CAR WILL NOT DISAPPOINT YOU. IT LOOKS SMALL BUT IS VERY SPACIOUS.

Very reliable vehicle. It has some wear and tear, but the car runs like it is supposed to. It is reliable. We have three two cars so we do not need this one. It needs a new tire, a rear tail light cover and a new gas lid cover. It has a rebuilt title. It was wrecked once at 30,000 miles and it has 158xxx miles now. For a 2002 I think it is in good shape. It has COLD ac and HOT heat. It has anchors to put three car seats in the vehicle. If you want to see pictures please message me because I tried to upload them and it would not work.

Very Reliable & Trustworthy. Never had doubts.Out of the 3 previous cars I've owned, this Galant has been the most reliable & dependable vehicle I've purchased. No matter how cold or hot the weather gets, no matter rain or snow, it has proven itself to me that it will get me to point A to point B with no hesitations or set backs. I've kept it well maintained & it kept me safe & on time, always!

Rust BucketI bought this car approximately 2-3 years ago, and before I start I'd like to say that the car is fairly reliable. I don't know how the previous owner took care of it, it was a one owner vehicle, but the paint was faded and the dash has a big crack down the middle of it, the dealership says that has to do with it being in the Florida sun. I got a good deal on the car but after the first rain I noticed why I got a good deal on it. I dunno if this is a rare issue or if its common but I had my mechanic investigate why that when it rained that the floor board would be soaking wet with no sunroof. He showed me that apparently there were several spots in the firewall that had rusted out, exposing the inside of the car, and thats where the water was coming from. Other than that the only other major issues I've had with the car is the catalytic converter went out and the power window motor went out on the drivers side. The car is fairly comfortable. I've gone on a few trips with it and didn't experience much discomfort and it did fairly good on gas considering the catalytic converter doesn't work.

Nothing but the best.....I have owned everything from a Cadillac Seville to a Chevrolet Corvair....however the Mitsubishi Galant was one of the best buys I have ever made. The car gets awesome gas mileage, runs well and never gave me pause about taking a trip. For 10 years now, as I wasn't able to buy another, this car has been awesome in every way. Not a very expensive car, in price, but absolutely worth a million in so many ways.
