The 2004 Mitsubishi Galant marked the eighth generation of this mid-size sedan, offering a more refined and stylish option compared to its predecessors. It's a four-door sedan, produced from 2004 to 2012. Key trims included the DE, ES, LS, and GTS. The original pricing ranged from approximately $18,000 to $25,000. Its distinctive styling and spacious interior were points of appeal, offering a blend of practicality and visual flair.
The Good

The 2004 Galant offered a comfortable ride and decent performance, particularly with the V6 engine. Its distinctive styling appealed to those seeking something different. From a practical standpoint, it provided a spacious interior and a reasonable price point. The reliability, while not exceptional, was generally acceptable for its class.

The Bad

Some weaknesses include potential transmission issues, especially in the V6 models. Rust can be a concern in areas with harsh winters. Also, the interior plastics can feel cheap. Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent larger problems down the line. Be sure to check for error codes during a pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2004 Mitsubishi Galant Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2004 Mitsubishi Galant often revolve around transmission issues, particularly in models equipped with the V6 engine. Owners have reported slipping gears, rough shifting, and, in some cases, complete transmission failure. Rust is also a common concern, especially in areas with road salt exposure. The rocker panels and undercarriage are prone to corrosion.

Other reported issues include problems with the air conditioning system, such as compressor failure or leaks. Some owners have also noted issues with the power windows and door locks. The interior plastics are susceptible to cracking and fading over time.

While there have been recalls for certain Mitsubishi models concerning airbag inflators (Takata), it's essential to check the specific VIN of the 2004 Galant being considered to determine if it's affected. Long-term reliability can be improved with meticulous maintenance, including regular fluid changes (transmission, engine oil, coolant) and addressing rust promptly. Preventative maintenance is key to mitigating potential problems with older vehicles like the 2004 Galant. Check NHTSA.gov for recall information specific to this year and model.

How long will the 2004 Mitsubishi Galant last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Mitsubishi Galant can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report vehicles lasting 15-20 years. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance. Neglecting fluid changes or ignoring minor repairs can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan.

Long-term durability weaknesses include rust, especially in colder climates, and potential transmission issues, especially in the V6 models. Regular inspection and preventative maintenance are crucial for extending the lifespan of the vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Mitsubishi Galant offered relatively basic tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims (LS and GTS) might have included an upgraded audio system or a CD changer. Navigation was not a common factory option.

Driver-assistance features were limited, with standard cruise control on some trims. Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS) as an option, front airbags, and side airbags on some trims. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was not available.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) vary depending on the specific test and model year. However, the 2004 Galant generally received decent, but not outstanding, ratings in frontal and side-impact crash tests. It's advisable to check the NHTSA website for specific ratings for the 2004 model year. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) may also have conducted tests.

Optional features could include a sunroof, upgraded audio, and leather seats. Keep in mind that the technology and safety features are dated compared to modern vehicles.

2004 Mitsubishi Galant Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Mitsubishi Galant ranged from approximately $18,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, contingent on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to the vehicle's age and reliability reputation. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and whether it has any outstanding mechanical issues or rust. Lower mileage and well-maintained examples command higher prices.

2004 Mitsubishi Galant Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2004 Mitsubishi Galant are generally moderate, reflecting its age and value. Fuel costs are average, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the potential for age-related issues and the availability of parts. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate if the vehicle is well-maintained; however, unexpected repairs can make it costly. It's more economical than some vehicles, but not the cheapest to own.

How Does the 2004 Mitsubishi Galant Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2004 Mitsubishi Galant competed with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Mazda 6. Compared to the Camry and Accord, the Galant offered more distinctive styling, but lagged behind in terms of reliability and resale value. The Altima offered similar performance, but the Galant's interior was often considered less refined. The Mazda 6 provided a sportier driving experience.

In terms of features, the Galant was generally comparable, but often at a lower price point. However, the Camry and Accord offered better long-term value due to their superior reliability.

Alternatives to the 2004 Mitsubishi Galant would include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, or Mazda 6 for better reliability and overall value. The Nissan Altima is a similar alternative in terms of price and features, but it's essential to research its reliability history as well. If reliability is a top priority, the Camry or Accord are better choices, even if they cost slightly more initially. The Mazda 6 is a good pick if you want something fun to drive.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Mitsubishi Galant a Good Sedan?

The 2004 Mitsubishi Galant is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a mid-size sedan with distinctive styling. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on its condition and price. A well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history might be a reasonable purchase if the price is right.

It's generally not recommended to buy a Galant with high mileage or known issues without a thorough inspection. The 4-cylinder models may be more reliable than the V6. Buying used is the only option, so prioritize finding a car with minimal rust and a well-documented service history. Be prepared for potential maintenance costs down the line.

Extremely Reliable

Had this vehicle and never had any transmission or engine work and easily lasted until over 282,000 miles. Wish Mitsubishi would make a current version of the Galant.

Best affordable used car you can buy. I drove it for 60,000 Miles and rarely had any problems with the car. Also aesthetically it still holds up.

Its the best car i've had

I love it, i personally got it for free, so i'm not complaining, but if you do need replacement parts they are extremely hard to find. My dad took forever to find a radiator.

Stylish, Roomy, Comfortable and Powerful

Plenty of leg room in the front and back seats. Powerful 3.8L V6 GTS engine blows other 4-door sports sedans out of the water. Exterior looks sharp! Sun roof is great! Love the leather interior! Minimal mechanical/electrical problems and inexpensive parts when things naturally need to be replaced. This was my daily driver all throughout college and my favorite car to date.
