The 2019 Subaru Ascent marked Subaru's return to the three-row SUV market. A spacious and capable vehicle, the Ascent offers a family-friendly alternative in a competitive segment. It features a wagon body style, and key trims include Base, Premium, Limited, and Touring. The original pricing ranged approximately from $32,000 to $48,000. Its standard all-wheel drive and focus on safety contribute to its popularity.
The Good

The 2019 Ascent boasts a comfortable ride and spacious cabin, appealing to families. Its standard all-wheel drive offers peace of mind in various weather conditions. Practical buyers appreciate its strong safety ratings and cargo capacity, while others enjoy its adventurous spirit and go-anywhere capability, despite its size.

The Bad

The 2019 Ascent had some early model year issues, including transmission problems and excessive oil consumption, which buyers should be aware of. The infotainment system can also feel dated compared to competitors. Some find the styling bland. Researching specific VINs for recall history is crucial.

What Problems Does the 2019 Subaru Ascent Have?

The 2019 Subaru Ascent had a somewhat rocky start in terms of reliability. One of the most frequently reported problems involves the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Some owners have experienced shuddering, hesitation, or even transmission failure at relatively low mileage. Subaru issued a recall for certain 2019 Ascents due to potential issues with the transmission chain.

Another concern revolves around excessive oil consumption. Some owners have reported needing to add oil frequently between oil changes. This issue seems to be more prevalent in earlier production models.

Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including freezing, lagging, and connectivity problems. While not as widespread as the transmission or oil consumption issues, it's still a noteworthy concern.

Long-term reliability is still a concern for the 2019 model year, particularly concerning the CVT. Prospective buyers should carefully research the vehicle's history and maintenance records, paying close attention to any evidence of transmission issues or excessive oil consumption. Checking for completed recall work is also critical. Later model years of the Ascent have addressed some of these initial concerns.

How long will the 2019 Subaru Ascent last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 Subaru Ascent can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-12 years of service. However, the early transmission issues and oil consumption problems can significantly impact longevity.

Consistent oil changes, timely CVT fluid replacements (more frequently than recommended by Subaru is advisable), and addressing any unusual noises or vibrations promptly are crucial for maximizing lifespan. Weaknesses include potential CVT failure, especially if not properly maintained, and continued monitoring of oil consumption is recommended throughout its life.

Great, fun SUV. Love to drive it on the road and off the road. Subaru is a great car to own and drive, this company stands behind their vehicles. This is the third Subaru I have own

Fantastic vehicle that is loaded with features. The value of this SUV is tremendous. It is certainly a great vehicle that should be top of list.

Other than normal maintenance & a few recalls, my limited edition Ascent has worked flawlessly, been safe & fun to drive & I have no complaints. This is my third Subaru (Legacy-Forester-Ascent) & they've all been good cars, each progressively better. I definitely recommend this car.
Negative Owner Reviews
Disappointed
I loved it at first but then it started to hesitate when I drove. Brought it in and they said I need a new transmission. What??? It’s grand freaking new!! Took 3 weeks to fix!
Steve
From transmission problems to my lift gate constantly getting stuck and the only way to reset it is to remove the battery! Panoramic sunroof cracks within the first year for no reason (no point of impact on the glass) Very disappointed in Subaru’s quality!
A.P.
I am now on day 16 of my loaner car from Subaru because the Ascent Transmission is going on at only 9,000 miles. My Rep at Subaru told me that a lot of the Ascents are having this issue but they haven't figured out the fix yet. Please stay away. I paid $40,000 for my car and have spent the last 2 1/2 weeks in a crappy loaner because the Ascent sucks. They told me today they have no idea when they will figure out the problem so I am stuck in the loaner for who knows how long. I have tons of videos of the Ascent CVT making clanking and grinding noises while I am on the road.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Subaru Ascent comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system (upgradable to 8-inch), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Higher trims offer a Wi-Fi hotspot and Harman Kardon premium audio.

Standard driver-assistance features include Subaru's EyeSight system: adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and pre-collision throttle management. Blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking are available on higher trims.

Optional features included a panoramic sunroof, a 180-degree front-view monitor, and rain-sensing wipers.

The 2019 Ascent received excellent crash-test ratings. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it a "Top Safety Pick+" award. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded it a 5-star overall safety rating. This makes the Ascent a strong choice for families prioritizing safety. The combination of advanced driver-assistance systems and robust crash performance makes it a well-rounded safety package.

2019 Subaru Ascent Prices and Market Value

The 2019 Subaru Ascent had an MSRP ranging from around $32,000 for the base model to $48,000 for the Touring trim when new. Used market prices currently range from approximately $18,000 to $28,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level.

The Ascent has depreciated more than some competitors, likely due to the initial reliability concerns. Lower mileage, a clean title, and a comprehensive service history will positively impact resale value. Addressing any known issues (e.g., transmission service, oil consumption) before selling can also improve its value.

2019 Subaru Ascent Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2019 Ascent are generally average for its class. Fuel economy is decent, but not exceptional, at around 20-27 mpg. Maintenance can be moderate, but potential transmission repairs or addressing oil consumption issues can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Due to these potential repair concerns, the 2019 Ascent can be more costly to own than some competitors, particularly if it hasn't been meticulously maintained.

How Does the 2019 Subaru Ascent Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2019 Subaru Ascent competes with vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, and Kia Telluride.

Performance: The Ascent's turbocharged engine provides adequate power, but its handling is not as sporty as the Explorer's. The Pilot and Highlander offer smoother, more refined driving experiences.

Features: The Ascent's standard all-wheel drive is a significant advantage. Feature-wise, it's competitive, though the Kia Telluride often offers more features for the price.

Reliability: The Ascent's reliability is a concern compared to the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, both known for their dependability. The Kia Telluride, despite being newer, has generally shown better initial reliability ratings.

Price: Used Ascents can be attractively priced, reflecting their depreciation.

Alternatives: If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot are better choices, although they might be more expensive. The Kia Telluride offers more features and a stylish design, but its long-term reliability is still being assessed. The Ford Explorer offers sportier handling but can be less reliable. If considering the Ascent, thoroughly inspect the vehicle's history and consider purchasing an extended warranty.

Ranks #371 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Subaru Ascent a Good Wagon?

The 2019 Subaru Ascent is ideal for families needing a spacious, three-row SUV with standard all-wheel drive and a focus on safety. It's worth considering *if* purchased used at a significant discount *and* after a thorough inspection reveals no signs of transmission issues or excessive oil consumption. Prioritize models with a documented service history, including any completed recall work. An extended warranty is highly recommended. Later model years (2020 and newer) are generally considered more reliable and might be a better choice if budget allows. The Premium or Limited trims offer a good balance of features and value.

It’s not been a terrible car but not been the best car

It’s not been a terrible car but not been the best car I’ve owned. Depends on where I get gas depends on if it has power to go or feels slogish. Like that you put your foot on gas and it acts like it wants to die but it doesn’t. Also, it has 99,000 miles and for a second time I’m having to get struts, mounts and bearings. That I’ve had to pay for replacing. The first was at 52,000 miles. Also, the passenger side window one day just got a crack in it across the whole window and the very next day the driver side did the same thing. I would say a rock but strangle that a rock hole wasn’t seen. Also, I’ve been told has nothing to do with it but it seems I’ve had more tire problems with this car, I am about to buy a second set for it. So in 5 years and 99,000 I’ve gone through 3 sets of tires. I am the only owner of this car.

Don’t buy this car!!

One recall after another . Car slammed on its brakes in the middle of an intersection and so far can’t be replicated so can’t be repaired . Several new transmissions due to recalls and now another recall due to electric system. This has been the WORST car my daughter has ever had and I feel badly because I told them that Subarus were great cars…Constantly in the shop. This is their only car and they have 3 small children .

Keep Looking

I like Subaru but they should have worked better at designing the Ascent. There are known battery/electrical issues. The stock battery isn’t sufficient to power the vehicle. My battery has died 4 times in 2 years. The Apple Car Play does not work. Subaru offered to replace the media system which they did but it still doesn’t work. Their response was “ya Subaru is meant more for android phones” but if that’s the case why bother adding the Apple Car Play app? There have been numerous recalls including the drive train which seems scary to be driving the car around by chance the drive train will slip. We were notified of the recall 6 months prior to have been able to actually address the problem. Third row has no room so kind of a waste. The interior is nice. Subaru did mention all the cup holders but you can’t really use the ones in the drivers or passenger doors. No room for a normal sized drink only for a tiny water bottle. I chose the limited because the touring only had that poop brown interior available and I wanted black/gray. Does drive smooth and love the Harmen Karmen speaker system. But overall I’m tired of the unreliability of the car. I just don’t want another car payment so I guess I’m stuck with this one. I’ll probably replace the radio screen with an after market one so my Apple car play actually works.

Good car, awful gas mileage

I have the touring edition and cannot get over 16mpg average in the city. It is supposed to be 20. I like the look and I like to drive but the gas mileage is terrible

Really like the 2019 Ascent except 3rd row room

I really like the 2019 Subaru Ascent Limited. I only have a couple of problems. I get complaints from my teenage daughters that the third row seats are so uncomfortable. Not enough room they say. They love the room in my wife’s Honda Pilot more. Another thing that I could do without is the X-Term feature. I never use it and to use it you have to be going slow. I’m not taking my Ascent into the woods or driving in some desolate snowy terrain. Kind of seems useless for what a majority of drivers would really need, i.e. different driving modes instead (mud, snow, etc.)

Not my first Subaru

The car is perfect for me. I am 5 ft tall yet has plenty of headroom for my husband who is 6 ft 4. Great gas mileage and lots of great features!
