How Does the 2012 Volkswagen Routan Compare to Other Van?
In terms of price, the Routan may be more affordable on the used market than the Odyssey or Sienna, but this comes with the trade-off of potentially higher repair costs. The Town & Country and Grand Caravan are similarly priced. Alternatives to consider include:
- Honda Odyssey: Known for its reliability, spacious interior, and resale value.
- Toyota Sienna: Another reliable option with available all-wheel drive.
- Kia Sedona: Offers a good balance of features, value, and warranty coverage (though older models may have expired warranties).
While the Routan offers a European-inspired design and comfortable ride, its reliability shortcomings make it a less compelling choice than the Odyssey or Sienna. If budget is a primary concern and you are prepared for potential repairs, the Routan might be considered, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Volkswagen Routan a Good Van?

I purchased my van over 10.I purchased my van over 10.5 years ago and it had 14k on it. Its now has 167k miles and still working fine. Had to replace the trans, engine mounts (2 times), and a couple of other things - I think I have spent about $6.5k since I purchased it. But over all it has been a great family van. The backup camera has stopped working consistently and the front seats are waren but other than that it’s great. It’s now time to replace it as I’m having trouble getting it to pass its smog but overall it’s been a great car and would recommend - drives great

I just purchased a 2012 VW Routan mini van with onlyI just purchased a 2012 VW Routan mini van with only 80,000 miles on it.It had only 2 owners and there was a coolant leak and a 2nd cylinder misfire. Put in a shop and they said that the valve was warped and there was a big coolant problem. I have only owned it a week. It needs a new Engine.waa told by German Motors that they extended there Warrenty on this vehicle because of this problem and mine expired in September. If I could show it had this problem in September or before that VW would replace the Engine. I am real sure that I can and I can get it replaced. I am furious that they were aware of this problem and didn't recall this vehicle. I owned a VW Jetta and loved it was why I bought this one. I had no idea that this would be a Lemon. I hope the dealership will do the right thing and replace the engine.

Great van for the money.Maybe it will outlast me!I bought my 2012 Volkswagen Routon SE used from a personal owner. After doing a Carfax I find out that it had been in the hands of at least four maybe five dealerships. The reason it was traded in so many times due to the check engine light coming on and going off but not really having any problems. But I don’t care about that light. I’ve driven the van maybe 20,000 miles and now has just over 90,000 and there has been no problems. The ride is a little stiff maybe it’s because there’s too much air in the tires, but it’s dependable, I’m impressed. But I do not like the cheap gauges and the plastic handles. But one that makes these vans different that Town and country Inn grand caravans is the plastic frame alongside the seat. It’s lower and less aft to break. I’m a heavy guy and I really like that. And the seating for the driver is really great. My van is a 2012 and this is 2022 and I mean every little feature works on the video. I couldn’t be more happy with it if I had to. And it’s a metal flake black with different colors in it and brown interior. My late mother bought a 2012 Chrysler and Country new, and I bought a 2017 Grand Caravan GT. They are providing that computer is right in the dash the Volkswagen gets substantial amount of better fuel mileage. The interior is a little cheap but one can live with that. Now that it’s getting a little older you can hear the windows in the doors making a slight noise as if they’re loose when I go up and down. Typical wear. But it’s garaged kept and often cleaned, Maybe it will outlast me! I’m a proud owner

Very reliable Mini VanThis minivan is reliable, has a strong motor, performs well and has a lot of safety features. The seats and the console are cheaply made!

Eight year reliable minivanAlmost at 175k miles. So far I've only had to replace rear evaporator, alternator (twice), thermostat housing, oil pressure sensor among the regular maintenance and that is it. I don't tow or overload it, just a van to drive the family around. A few interior parts are coming off but I'm surprised not more has fallen apart due to it living through the first 8 years of two kids lives. I love the tailgating feature of the third row. The rear motors are getting tired, sometimes they need some help.
