The 2012 Volkswagen Routan is a minivan resulting from a collaboration with Chrysler. Its body style is, of course, a minivan, and it was produced from 2009-2014. Key trims include the S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. Pricing when new ranged roughly from $27,000 to $40,000. The Routan aimed to offer a more European driving feel and interior styling compared to its Chrysler counterparts, setting it apart with a more refined aesthetic.
The Good

The 2012 Volkswagen Routan offers a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers. Its European-influenced design provides a touch of style that some may find emotionally appealing. While not known for stellar reliability, its smooth engine and well-damped suspension deliver a pleasant driving experience for a minivan.

The Bad

The 2012 Volkswagen Routan's reliability can be a concern. Watch out for potential issues with the electrical system, power sliding doors, and the transmission. Some owners have reported problems with the entertainment system as well. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate potential problems. Consider a pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2012 Volkswagen Routan Have?

The 2012 Volkswagen Routan, while generally a comfortable minivan, has faced several reported issues and recalls that potential buyers should be aware of.

Frequently Reported Problems:
  • Electrical Issues: Problems with the electrical system, including malfunctioning power windows, door locks, and entertainment systems, are commonly reported.
  • Power Sliding Doors: The power sliding doors are prone to failure, requiring costly repairs.
  • Transmission Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the transmission, including rough shifting and complete failure.
  • Engine Issues: Although the 3.6L V6 is generally reliable, some owners have experienced oil leaks and other minor engine problems.

Recalls:
It is important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls. Recalls have been issued for issues such as faulty airbag inflators and potential wiring harness problems that could lead to a fire hazard.

Long-Term Reliability Concerns:
Over the long term, the Routan's reliability is a significant concern. Many owners have reported needing frequent repairs, which can lead to high ownership costs. The Chrysler-based platform has been linked to certain reliability issues. Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended to assess the vehicle's current condition and identify any potential problems.

How long will the 2012 Volkswagen Routan last?

A well-maintained 2012 Volkswagen Routan could potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, achieving this depends heavily on consistent maintenance and repair habits. Given their age, many examples likely have over 100,000 miles. Common long-term durability weaknesses include the transmission, electrical components, and power sliding doors. Rust can also become a problem in regions with harsh winters. Regular fluid changes and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for maximizing longevity. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan.

I love my Routan I don’t think I’ll ever own another kind of vehicle. It’s comfy, has every feature I wanted and looked for and my little girls absolutely love it to. The only thing I wish it had and it still might km still learning the features, is away to use my phone over the speakers and the kids dvd still Have sound. Best car I have ever owned.

Almost at 175k miles. So far I've only had to replace rear evaporator, alternator (twice), thermostat housing, oil pressure sensor among the regular maintenance and that is it. I don't tow or overload it, just a van to drive the family around. A few interior parts are coming off but I'm surprised not more has fallen apart due to it living through the first 8 years of two kids lives. I love the tailgating feature of the third row. The rear motors are getting tired, sometimes they need some help.

2012 Volkswagen Routan Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Volkswagen Routan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Volkswagen Routan Compare to Other Van?

The 2012 Volkswagen Routan competes with minivans like the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Town & Country (its platform sibling), and Dodge Grand Caravan. In terms of performance, the Routan's 3.6L V6 is comparable to its rivals. Feature-wise, it offers a similar range of options, especially in higher trims. However, the Routan generally falls short in reliability compared to the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, which are known for their dependability. The Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan share similar reliability concerns.

In terms of price, the Routan may be more affordable on the used market than the Odyssey or Sienna, but this comes with the trade-off of potentially higher repair costs. The Town & Country and Grand Caravan are similarly priced. Alternatives to consider include:

  • Honda Odyssey: Known for its reliability, spacious interior, and resale value.
  • Toyota Sienna: Another reliable option with available all-wheel drive.
  • Kia Sedona: Offers a good balance of features, value, and warranty coverage (though older models may have expired warranties).

While the Routan offers a European-inspired design and comfortable ride, its reliability shortcomings make it a less compelling choice than the Odyssey or Sienna. If budget is a primary concern and you are prepared for potential repairs, the Routan might be considered, but a thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Volkswagen Routan a Good Van?

The 2012 Volkswagen Routan is ideal for buyers on a tight budget who need a minivan and appreciate its European-influenced styling. It is potentially worth buying *used* if thoroughly inspected by a trusted mechanic beforehand. Given its age, buying new is not an option. The SE or SEL trims offer a good balance of features without the higher price of the SEL Premium. However, prospective buyers must be aware of the potential reliability issues and be prepared for potential repair costs. If reliability is a top priority, consider a Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna instead, even if they cost more upfront. It’s crucial to weigh the initial cost savings against the potential for long-term repair expenses.

I purchased my van over 10.

I purchased my van over 10.5 years ago and it had 14k on it. Its now has 167k miles and still working fine. Had to replace the trans, engine mounts (2 times), and a couple of other things - I think I have spent about $6.5k since I purchased it. But over all it has been a great family van. The backup camera has stopped working consistently and the front seats are waren but other than that it’s great. It’s now time to replace it as I’m having trouble getting it to pass its smog but overall it’s been a great car and would recommend - drives great

I just purchased a 2012 VW Routan mini van with only

I just purchased a 2012 VW Routan mini van with only 80,000 miles on it.It had only 2 owners and there was a coolant leak and a 2nd cylinder misfire. Put in a shop and they said that the valve was warped and there was a big coolant problem. I have only owned it a week. It needs a new Engine.waa told by German Motors that they extended there Warrenty on this vehicle because of this problem and mine expired in September. If I could show it had this problem in September or before that VW would replace the Engine. I am real sure that I can and I can get it replaced. I am furious that they were aware of this problem and didn't recall this vehicle. I owned a VW Jetta and loved it was why I bought this one. I had no idea that this would be a Lemon. I hope the dealership will do the right thing and replace the engine.

Great van for the money.Maybe it will outlast me!

I bought my 2012 Volkswagen Routon SE used from a personal owner. After doing a Carfax I find out that it had been in the hands of at least four maybe five dealerships. The reason it was traded in so many times due to the check engine light coming on and going off but not really having any problems. But I don’t care about that light. I’ve driven the van maybe 20,000 miles and now has just over 90,000 and there has been no problems. The ride is a little stiff maybe it’s because there’s too much air in the tires, but it’s dependable, I’m impressed. But I do not like the cheap gauges and the plastic handles. But one that makes these vans different that Town and country Inn grand caravans is the plastic frame alongside the seat. It’s lower and less aft to break. I’m a heavy guy and I really like that. And the seating for the driver is really great. My van is a 2012 and this is 2022 and I mean every little feature works on the video. I couldn’t be more happy with it if I had to. And it’s a metal flake black with different colors in it and brown interior. My late mother bought a 2012 Chrysler and Country new, and I bought a 2017 Grand Caravan GT. They are providing that computer is right in the dash the Volkswagen gets substantial amount of better fuel mileage. The interior is a little cheap but one can live with that. Now that it’s getting a little older you can hear the windows in the doors making a slight noise as if they’re loose when I go up and down. Typical wear. But it’s garaged kept and often cleaned, Maybe it will outlast me! I’m a proud owner
