The 2010 Volkswagen Routan is a minivan produced from 2009 to 2012. It's essentially a rebadged Chrysler Town & Country/Dodge Grand Caravan, offering German-inspired styling. Key trims included S, SE, and SEL. The pricing range when new was approximately $25,000 to $40,000. It stood out with its slightly different exterior styling and VW interior touches, aiming for a more upscale minivan experience.
The Good

The 2010 Routan offers decent performance from its V6 engine. It prioritizes comfort with a spacious interior and comfortable seating, appealing to families. Its design offered a slightly more refined aesthetic compared to its Chrysler counterparts. The Routan is a practical choice for buyers needing space and features at a reasonable price.

The Bad

The 2010 Routan's reliability is a concern, mirroring issues found in its Chrysler-based platform. Watch out for transmission problems, electrical glitches, and issues with the power sliding doors. Some owners have reported premature wear of suspension components. The Routan's resale value also tends to be lower than some competitors.

What Problems Does the 2010 Volkswagen Routan Have?

The 2010 Volkswagen Routan shares many of its mechanical components with the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, and thus, it experiences similar reliability issues. Frequently reported problems include transmission failures (particularly with the 6-speed automatic), electrical glitches affecting power windows, door locks, and the entertainment system. Power sliding door malfunctions are also common. Some owners have reported issues with the suspension, including premature wear of bushings and ball joints.

Recalls for the 2010 Routan have addressed issues such as potential problems with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which can cause stalling or prevent the vehicle from starting. There have also been recalls related to airbag systems and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability is a major concern, as many Routans require significant repairs as they age. Check the vehicle history report for any completed recall work and be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs compared to more reliable minivans. Model years close to 2010 may exhibit similar issues.

How long will the 2010 Volkswagen Routan last?

A 2010 Volkswagen Routan, with regular maintenance, could potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance and repair of known weaknesses. Long-term durability is a concern due to the Chrysler platform. Key weaknesses that can shorten its lifespan include transmission issues, electrical problems, and rust, especially in regions with harsh winters. Regular fluid changes, prompt repairs, and rust prevention measures are essential for maximizing its lifespan.

this is an incredible car, kids love it, plenty of room, have had no issues with this vehicle thus far, much better and more upgraded than my previous minivan

I love my granny so much, yes there are a few things that will need to be done sooner or later but the van is in great shape all around for the age and miles, no tears or stuff just love it

The VW Routan is a Dodge Caravan with 'upgraded interior'. It's built in the US alongside the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town And Country and as such share most of the mechanical's. The interior is better than the Dodge and Chrysler (not saying much), but it is way off the usual standard you expect from VW. Reliability is also more dodge/chrysler than VW too. Don't buy (unless you want to buy mine off me)

I've leased minivans before but have never dealt with the desaster that is the Volkswagen Routan. I have had it for a year and a half and it has been in the shop for a total of 3 months during that time. At 6,000 miles the transmission went out. They kept it for 2 months that time for every excuse in the book, couldn't get parts, their tech wasn't qualified so they had to wait for an out of state tech to come in. The customer care dept. was no help, they are very good at apologizing but nothing happens. At 15 k the tranny went out again. It's been another month now, I don't have my van back and they are apologizing as they are waiting on a part. Nobody seems to be able to help. If you are looking for a van that you can accually use then don't buy this one.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Volkswagen Routan offers a range of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include an AM/FM/CD audio system, air conditioning, and basic safety equipment like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC). Higher trims (SE and SEL) offer more advanced features.

Entertainment: Optional features included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with screens for rear passengers, a premium audio system, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Some models also had a navigation system.

Driver-Assistance: Basic driver-assistance features were available, such as rear parking sensors. However, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring were not common.

Safety: Standard safety features include front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for all three rows. Optional features included a rearview camera.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2010 Routan's crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA vary depending on the specific test. It generally performed well in frontal and side-impact tests, but its roof strength rating was sometimes a point of concern. Check official IIHS and NHTSA reports for detailed crash-test results for this specific model year.

2010 Volkswagen Routan Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Volkswagen Routan ranged from approximately $25,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Routan has depreciated significantly due to its Chrysler-based platform and perceived reliability issues. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and geographic location. Routans with lower mileage and well-documented maintenance records will command higher prices, but overall, expect substantial depreciation.

2010 Volkswagen Routan Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2010 Volkswagen Routan are average for a minivan. Fuel costs are moderate, given its V6 engine. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to its shared Chrysler components and potential reliability issues. Expect to spend more on repairs as the vehicle ages. Overall, the Routan is not the most economical minivan to own long-term, especially considering potential repairs.

2010 Volkswagen Routan Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Volkswagen Routan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Extended Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Volkswagen Routan Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Extended Van?

The 2010 Volkswagen Routan competes with minivans like the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Town & Country/Dodge Grand Caravan, and Nissan Quest. In terms of performance, it's comparable to the Chrysler minivans, but the Odyssey and Sienna often offer more refined driving experiences. Feature-wise, the Routan offers a similar level of equipment as its rivals, especially in higher trims. However, the Routan lags behind in reliability. The Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna are known for their superior long-term reliability. Price-wise, the Routan can be found for less than the Odyssey or Sienna on the used market, but this reflects its lower resale value and reliability concerns. Alternatives to the Routan include the Honda Odyssey (more reliable but pricier), Toyota Sienna (highly reliable but potentially more expensive), or a well-maintained Chrysler Town & Country/Dodge Grand Caravan if budget is a primary concern, but be aware of similar reliability risks. The Kia Sedona is also worth considering.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Volkswagen Routan a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Extended Van?

The 2010 Volkswagen Routan is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who need a minivan and appreciate its slightly different styling. However, its reliability is a significant concern. It's worth buying only if you can find one in excellent condition with a well-documented maintenance history and at a significantly lower price than more reliable competitors. A thorough pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. Consider it primarily as a short-term transportation solution rather than a long-term investment. Opt for the lowest trim level that meets your needs, as the higher trims offer features that may be prone to failure.

Disappointment

We purchased a new Routan in 2010 with the birth of our third child. Its been a great van overall for the last few years then all of a sudden issue after issue pops up. Tires, brakes, radiator, A/C, and not the transmission is dying. Our van is garage kept, religiously scheduled maintenance for all fluids, and only has 139,000 miles on it (we commuted a lot from 2015-17). Wish we had known more about Chrysler and the short lifespan of their products back when we purchased this van! We generally keep our cars for years, and get well over $200K miles before we have to trade in. Buyer beware.

Great for the Price!

Great value for a 9 year old vehicle. Runs great and should last me years to come. Was also very surprised to see no rust on the body for the age it was.

I've only had it a week.

So far I'm loving this vehicle. I do wish the seats stowed into the floor when it said Stow and go I thought that's what it meant but they don't go all the way in they fold up out of the way but they don't go on the floor.
