The 2009 Volkswagen Routan is a minivan born from a collaboration with Chrysler. It offers a blend of German engineering and American practicality. Produced from 2009-2014, key trims include S, SE, and SEL. New, it ranged from approximately $25,000 to $40,000. The Bad

The 2009 Routan shares some reliability concerns with its Chrysler counterparts. Common issues include electrical problems, transmission issues, and problems with the power sliding doors. What Problems Does the 2009 Volkswagen Routan Have?

The 2009 Volkswagen Routan, while attempting to differentiate itself from its Chrysler-built platform mates, unfortunately inherited some of their reliability woes. Frequently reported problems include:

  • Electrical Issues: Problems with the electrical system are common, ranging from malfunctioning power windows and door locks to issues with the entertainment system and dashboard electronics.
  • Transmission Problems: Some owners have reported transmission slipping or failure, often requiring expensive repairs or replacement.
  • Power Sliding Doors: The power sliding doors are a known trouble spot, with issues ranging from not opening or closing properly to complete failure of the mechanism.
  • Engine Issues: The 3.8L V6 engine in earlier models had some complaints about power delivery and overall performance. This led to its replacement with the 4.0L V6 in later models.
  • Recalls: It's crucial to check for any outstanding recalls on the specific vehicle's VIN. Recalls may have addressed issues related to the airbags, electrical system, or other safety-related components.

Long-term reliability is a concern. The Routan doesn't have a stellar reputation for lasting hundreds of thousands of miles without significant repairs. Addressing any known issues promptly and adhering to a strict maintenance schedule are essential for prolonging its lifespan. Checking the vehicle's maintenance history and getting a pre-purchase inspection are crucial before buying a used model.

How long will the 2009 Volkswagen Routan last?

A 2009 Volkswagen Routan, given average maintenance, might reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, longevity heavily depends on conscientious maintenance. Poor maintenance accelerates wear and tear, leading to premature failures. Weaknesses tend to appear in the electrical system, transmission, and power sliding doors over time. Rust can also become a factor in regions with harsh winters. Consistent fluid changes, timely repairs, and careful driving habits are key to maximizing its lifespan.

2009 Volkswagen Routan Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Volkswagen Routan ranged from about $25,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim and options. Today, used models typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to reliability concerns and the vehicle's age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, a clean title, and a comprehensive maintenance history. Routans with significant issues or high mileage will have a lower resale value.

2009 Volkswagen Routan Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Volkswagen Routan can be relatively costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are average for a minivan. Fuel economy is decent but not exceptional. Maintenance costs can be higher than average due to potential repairs associated with electrical and transmission issues. Repair costs, especially for these known weaknesses, can add up quickly. Overall, it's not the most economical minivan due to potential maintenance demands.

Insurance for a 2009 Volkswagen Routan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Van Extended with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Volkswagen Routan Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Van Extended?

The 2009 Volkswagen Routan competed with minivans like the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Dodge Grand Caravan (its platform sibling), and Chrysler Town & Country. In terms of performance, it was generally comparable, although the Odyssey and Sienna offered a more refined driving experience. Feature-wise, it held its own, but the Chrysler twins often offered more value for the money.

Reliability is where the Routan struggled. The Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna consistently rank higher in reliability surveys. While the Routan attempted to offer a more upscale interior, its reliability issues often overshadowed this advantage.

Price-wise, used Routans can be attractive due to their depreciation. However, considering long-term ownership costs, a used Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna might be a better choice, despite potentially costing more upfront. The Dodge Grand Caravan offers similar functionality at a lower price point, but also shares reliability concerns. Ultimately, if reliability is a primary concern, the Odyssey or Sienna are better alternatives. If budget is the overriding factor, carefully inspect a Grand Caravan or Town & Country before buying.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Volkswagen Routan a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Van Extended?

The 2009 Volkswagen Routan is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who prioritize space and features over long-term reliability, and who are prepared for potential repairs. It might be worth buying used if found in excellent condition with a thorough maintenance history and a pre-purchase inspection reveals no major issues. Avoid models with known electrical or transmission problems. Specific trims aren't as crucial as overall condition. However, given the availability of more reliable alternatives, carefully consider your priorities before purchasing a Routan.

Good van!

Very comfortable, and nice luxury at an affordable price. Love the Stow-n-Go feature. Heated seats, DVD player, and good stereo. We use this for both daily commuting and for a Homeless & Transition outreach and it serves both purposes well.

Transmission problems

Not excited about having to put in a new solenoid kit at $900 or new transmission for $3,000. Shop cannot tell me which it needs. Chrysler made transmission. Mine is 2009 VW Routan Van. Shop said this transmission is seen often to need replaced.

Vehicle not reliable at all

I?ve been financing this vehicle 4 months now and started having problems the first few weeks. Front driver and passenger window gets stuck a rolls down when u try and roll it up. Electrical issues like no tomorrow. Van is roomy and comfortable but not reliable. Transmission is horrible. Interior lights flicker on and off 4x at least a week . All doors and sunroof was closed and on a bad stormy day I went in car the following day and it had severe water damage which looks disgusting. Sometimes takes 5 times to start it before it actually starts. Overall it?s a piece of shot car. I don?t recommend at all. And I?m past my 3 month warranty so of course it?s all on me maintance wise. Heat is phenomenal. The leather wears out so bad . Biggest mistake with this vehicle . Any recommendations I can do for Volkswagen to own up and make it a recall. They basically financing me a lemon. Like playing Russian roulette. Sad to say.
