The Good
The 2010 Touareg offers a compelling blend of performance and comfort. Its powerful engine options provide ample acceleration, while the luxurious interior and smooth ride appeal to emotional buyers. Practically, it boasts all-wheel drive capability for varied terrain and a respectable towing capacity. Fuel efficiency, while not class-leading, is acceptable for its size and power.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2010 Touareg include higher maintenance costs compared to some rivals. Electrical issues and air suspension problems have been reported. Fuel economy, particularly with the VR6 engine, can be a concern. Potential buyers should thoroughly inspect the vehicle's maintenance history and consider a pre-purchase inspection to assess these potential issues.

What Problems Does the 2010 Volkswagen Touareg Have?
Recalls for the 2010 Touareg have been issued for various reasons, including fuel leaks and potential brake issues; it's vital to check the vehicle's VIN for recall history. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the complexity of the vehicle's systems. Earlier model years (2003-2007) had more frequent reports of transmission issues, which seemed to be lessened but not completely eliminated by 2010. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help mitigate potential problems. Diesel models (TDI) can be prone to issues related to the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and other emissions components, especially if not driven regularly on longer trips to facilitate regeneration.
How long will the 2010 Volkswagen Touareg last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles but included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and traction control. Optional features included parking sensors.
Safety features were comprehensive, including front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2010 Volkswagen Touareg four out of five stars for overall safety. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings should be consulted for specific crash test results for front, side, and roof strength. Features like adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning were not available on this model year. The inclusion of 4Motion all-wheel drive adds to overall safety and control in adverse weather conditions.

How Does the 2010 Volkswagen Touareg Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
In terms of price, the Touareg falls somewhere in the middle of the pack. If reliability is a top priority, the Lexus RX or Acura MDX are better alternatives. If off-road capability is key, the Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a similar experience at a potentially lower cost. The BMW X5 provides a similar level of performance and luxury but may also come with higher maintenance costs. Therefore, the Touareg presents a compelling blend, but buyers should carefully consider their priorities and budget.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Volkswagen Touareg a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

Timing chain nightmareLike a bunch of VW and Audi products, their engineers got their head stuck in the wrong place. What genius designs a timing chain that fails and costs $8k to replace? And when VW's fails it causes engine damage with no warning. Can't even gamble throwing in a used engine due to $5k in labor to remove and replace the engine - 30 hours. The engine would be covered if faulty but the labor is not. I loved this vehicle until 118k. Good ride, great fuel economy with the diesel, great handling, and very little maintenance. Diesel engines should be good for 200k plus, not this one. There is even a class action settlement that VW was forced to cover the timing chain failures, but only up to 100k. This included most of their vehicles from 2008 thru 2014.

In the shop more than I have itVery comfortable car, love both the interior and exterior design. Major issue though, we bought it in Feb of this year and it has been in the shop more than we have had it. We keep getting told it is the emissions, all under warranty, however, on trip number 4 to fix the issues. This is the only vehicle we have, making it difficult to get back and forth to work when it is in the shop every two weeks and for at least two weeks at a time! But, I will admit, in between the two weeks, it runs great.

Most comfortable and upscale off roader I ever ownSilky smooth Turbo Diesel engine. Excellent power delivery. Silky and upscale ride. Same vehicle as Porsche Cayenne without the premium price tag. Great interior. Very comfortable seats. I wish they had continued to bring this vehicle to USA.

Comfortable, fast, good on gasI've loved these vehicles since I've seen it. I now own one and love it. It's the most luxurious car I've owned, so many cool features I did not know about. I wish the 2010 had a Bluetooth audio feature but I can add it on later. The engine has more than enough power for me. There is a bit of a turbo lag in the tdi but I think that's just from the big turbo and big engine power. The awd system is top notch and works great in the snow.

Best SUVI've owned this car since 2015 after purchasing it certified. It's been an excellent vehicle from the moment I drove it off the lot. Super capable and comfortable. I live in Minnesota and have driven it when there have been snow storms that have dropped feet of snow and the Touareg has never once gotten stuck. Other SUV's struggled but I was able to plow ahead as if there was just a dusting of snow. Could not recommend this vehicle more. You won't be disappointed!

TDI plagued with problemsGreat power, but it had issues since the day I bought it to the day VW bought it back. Oil pressure switches and DEF system all had to be replaced.
